There is no question that the media plays an important role in our political system. For most Americans, the mass media, particularly television, is the most important source of political information. Because of this, the news media has attracted significant attention from scholars of politics and communications, politicians and journalists themselves. Frequently, this attention has come in the form of criticisms of how the media presents the news. The media has been criticized for many possible forms of bias --ideological bias, selection bias and commercial bias. Among the specific criticisms of the press are that its coverage of the news is overly negative, lacking in substance, and driven by crisis.
Ideologically speaking, charges of liberal bias are probably the most frequently heard, but many liberals believe that news coverage contains a lot of conservative bias as well. Purpose of the Paper (Examining the Production of Contemporary Historiography) - The goal
of this paper is to allow you to analyze how “historiography” is an ongoing process largely
influenced by the news media. History is a subjectively generated product. History incorporates

In just the first month of our COM 107 class this Spring, a number of major events are scheduled to take place: the Grammy awards, Iowa caucuses, New Hampshire primaries, and the 50th Super Bowl. These are opportunities we ought not ignore. We can use them to examine how new and old media

shape a single event differently.

Your assignment is to select ONE of these four events and examine how various media outlets cover it the day after. You will need to plan ahead and start thinking about your paper assignment now so that you can pay attention to media coverage leading up to the event, as the lead-up will likely inform the introductory paragraph of your paper.
On the day of your event you should plan to watch the television coverage and follow social media buzz during it. This will inform your analysis. Then you should monitor the coverage of, and information flow about, that event as it appears in a variety of media and platforms, on the day after. Clearly you cannot monitor everything in all media being published and broadcast, even about a single event. So to simplify your analysis, you should choose one outlet from each of the following five types:
a general interest (legacy) news source such as The New York Times, CNN, Wall Street Journal, or NPR
an industry specific news source such as Sports Illustrated for the Super Bowl, Politico for politics, or Entertainment Tonight for the Grammys
an industry owned source such as the Twitter feed of the NFL, Grammys, or Republican National Convention
an international news source (anything produced outside the US)
a niche media outlet that is created for and by a marginalized group (LGBTQ, Hispanic,
Black, women’s media)
Your sample MUST include examples of all five types listed above so that you can compare and contrast how different media outlets, with different audiences and missions, frame stories differently. Again, you should plan ahead by selecting your media outlets even before your event happens.
For example, if you choose the Iowa caucuses, you might choose to monitor New York Times
coverage; Politico coverage; the RNC’s website, the Guardian, and theroot.com. Or you might choose, instead, the coverage on the Chicago Tribune’s website, politifact.com, the DNC’s
Twitter feed, Le Monde, and latinomagazine.com. If you are covering the Grammys you might choose the LA Times, Variety, @theGRAMMYs on Twitter, the BBC, msmagazine.com.
That should provide you with a diversified sample of media content about which to make some judgments. If you have any question about the sample of media you have chosen, see us and clear the sample.

A Measure Of Media Bias
This study measures media bias in major US media outlets by comparing how often they cite various think tanks and policy groups to how often members of Congress cite the same groups. The results show an overall liberal bias: most outlets, including the New York Times and CBS Evening News, were scored as being closer to the average Democrat in Congress than the political center. Only Fox News' Special Report and the Washington Times were scored as being right of the average member of Congress. This provides an objective measure of media slant and allows comparisons to ideological scores of political actors.

There is no question that the media plays an important role in our political system. For most Americans, the mass media, particularly television, is the most important source of political information. Because of this, the news media has attracted significant attention from scholars of politics and communications, politicians and journalists themselves. Frequently, this attention has come in the form of criticisms of how the media presents the news. The media has been criticized for many possible forms of bias --ideological bias, selection bias and commercial bias. Among the specific criticisms of the press are that its coverage of the news is overly negative, lacking in substance, and driven by crisis.

Find a current event related to a social issue of your choosing (no older than a few months) that was widely covered by the media.
Choose two different news articles from two different media sources. Write an essay comparing and contrasting your two sources.
Clearly identify the author, title of article, name of publication. Take notice of the type of article: local, national or international news story, editorial, or column, etc.
Identify the main claim and supporting reasons or premises of your article.
Analyze the logic of the article according to the critical analysis tools we have been studying throughout the course, including
identifying fallacies and rhetorical devices
. Try looking deeper into the news coverage to discern the significant information that is omitted, and if the evidence is viable. Discern the logic of the arguments in each specific news article. Be alert to discern if there are rival causes and if the evidence is deceptive. Consider what significant information is omitted or if other reasonable conclusions are possible.

The first student compared TMZ and Fox News, finding Fox News more immediate. They emphasized fact-checking sources before publishing.
The second student focused on capacity and interactivity online versus print. They noted online news' greater space and inclusion of photos/videos. Interactivity allows finding other coverage and tracking site visits.
A Measure Of Media Bias
This study measures media bias in major US media outlets by comparing how often they cite various think tanks and policy groups to how often members of Congress cite the same groups. The results show an overall liberal bias: most outlets, including the New York Times and CBS Evening News, were scored as being closer to the average Democrat in Congress than the political center. Only Fox News' Special Report and the Washington Times were scored as being right of the average member of Congress. This provides an objective measure of media slant and allows comparisons to ideological scores of political actors.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

- 2. Exploring newspaper content With this application we aim to support an exploration of: ✦ how frequent a certain topic is mentioned in a newspaper, ✦ with which other topics it co-occurs and ✦ what kind of images are selected with articles about this topic. Two panels for a side-by-side comparison of two different newspapers or two different topics
- 3. The dataset consists of all news articles featured on the website of five newspapers between August 2014 and August 2015. 1. Select a newspaper
- 4. 2. Choose a topic We use an autocomplete function to show all topics matching the characters entered in the topic search box.
- 5. 3. Select what you want to explore: topics, categories, or image concepts The topics and categories that were detected in the text of the news articles are quite reliable. The automatically detected image concepts, on the other hand, are an experimental feature!
- 6. The plot shows topics that are frequently found in articles that are about Bernie Sanders.
- 7. The NYT wrote 14 articles about Bernie Sanders between August 2014 and Augusts 2015. 57% of them were also about Hillary Clinton
