This document provides guidelines for measuring picture frames and artwork:
- Picture frames have a lip rebate that can reduce the viewable area by 3-10mm. Measure just the artwork, not areas covered by the frame.
- Use the interactive frame designer to enter artwork dimensions and any mount borders, and it will calculate required frame sizes.
- Measure artwork edges precisely in millimeters. Check for right angles and measure problem areas smaller.
- Mount borders of 40mm or less generally work best for smaller artworks, but larger pieces may need wider borders to maintain balance.
2. Picture Frame Measuring Guide
Picture Frame Sizes
Unless stated otherwise, the sizes quoted on our web site are for the
the artwork that goes into the picture frame or picture mount. Please
Please note however, that all our frames have a lip rebate on them
them which prevents the glazing and backing board from falling
falling through the frame.
3. Picture Frame Sizes
This lip rebate will mean that you can loose between 3-10mm of the
the viewable area at the front of the frame. Please keep this in mind
mind when measuring your artwork.
4. Using our Interactive Custom Frame Designer
To make it easy to use our Interactive Custom Frame Designer, you
you simply enter your artwork dimensions and the size of any mount
mount borders and the web site software calculates the size of the
the frame and/or mount required to fit these requirements. We also
also detail the total internal frame size and the approximate external
external frame size for additional information.
5. Artwork Measurements
Simply measure in millimetres the exact height and width from edge
edge to edge of your photo, picture or other artwork. Only measure
measure what you want to be visible.
6. It is important to check that all the corners of your artwork are at
right angles. If not, you will need to compensate for it by
measuring a smaller rectangular area. If you only want to frame
part of an image, just measure that area.
7. We will make your frame and mount so that your artwork fits
comfortably within it and does not fall out or excessively move
around. If you have a computer image of your artwork you can
upload it to our site so you can see what it will look like in your
frame. Please note that we do not print this image, it is purely to
help you better visualise what the final product will look like.
8. Mount Border Sizes
When choosing a picture mount you will need to enter a suitable
suitable border width for the mount. A mount width of 40mm is a
popular choice for artwork sizes 200mm x 200mm and below however
however larger pictures or wide frame mouldings generally benefit
benefit from a wider mount to maintain the visual balance. Our
Custom Frame Designer software automatically calculates an optimal
optimal size to guide you.
9. Most artwork will be further enhanced with a double mount. You
can select this by clicking the Back Mount tab on the
Mounts selector. Again you need to select the border width. A
narrow border of 10mm will add some depth to the whole visual
affect whereas a wider back mount tends to draw your eye into
the artwork giving it more focus and impact.
