This document describes a standard scheme for representing the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) using ASCII characters for use in online communications like email and forums. It allows for both phonemic and phonetic transcription. Segments are represented implicitly with letters and explicitly with feature sets in curly brackets. Diacritics modify segments and are enclosed in angle brackets. It includes appendices listing the feature sets, segment symbols, diacritic symbols, and examples of English phonemic transcription.
