A recent cancer study by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, has suggested that two-thirds of cancer cases are primarily due to random cell mutations. The other third are thought to arise due to environmental factors, lifestyle and inherited genes.1 Each day, billions of cells are replenished within our bodies by the dividing of our stem cells. With each cell division, there is a danger of DNA mutation which ultimately leads to a cell becoming cancerous. The body may then continue to split the cancerous cells and produce more cancerous cells through this replication process.

Yolanda Godbee Columbia Southern University Body Paragraphs Revision Introduction There have been arguments on whether the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks. Many religious groups and non-governmental organizations have been on the front line in condemning vaccination. Most of these groups argue that vaccination does not only prevent children from contracting some diseases but also have their long-term side effects. Some of the religious groups have come out to claim that vaccination is used by some of the governments as a birth control method since it has effects on the hormones responsible for the formation of the fetus. However, the claims have not been substantiated (Sears, 2011). The groups have not rested their case there; some have access to resources, and they say they have conducted tests on some of the polio vaccines, and they found out that they affect most of the female children. They believe that the vaccine causes hormonal imbalance and therefore interfering with the normal process of conceiving and giving birth. Vaccination prevents the children from contracting diseases as they develop. Vaccinations given to children at tender ages help then strengthen their immunity thus preventing a lot of diseases from infecting them. According to Sears (2011), the government of United States has championed for the vaccination to all children to help them grow healthy. The government champions the vaccination for children because of the enormous health benefits. Other countries like Australia, United Kingdom and Sweden are also championing for disease prevention in children and the society in general through vaccination. The spirit has been spread to other parts of the world like in Africa where last year the number of the vaccinated children increased by 37% in just two years. The move has not only seen many children being prevented from risky illnesses, but the society has also responded positively to the issue of immunization. Prevention of diseases is not the only benefit of vaccination. Vaccination has also helped various countries to strengthen their economies in a significant way. Some diseases like Ebola, measles, polio and small pox can now be controlled through vaccination thus making people healthier and stronger to build the economy of their countries. This is evident in the 20th century when these diseases were killer diseases and governments spent lots of money in treating them hence making the economy weaker in the process. Evidently, recent research that was conducted by the Union of Doctors states that the number of people who died of polio and measles has drastically dropped and that is because vaccination has been embraced by many nations (Sears, 2011). Hepatitis A and E are typically caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B, C and D usually occur as a result of parenteral contact with infected body fluids. Common modes of transmission for these viruses include receipt of contaminated blood or blood products, invasive medical procedures using contaminated equipment and for hepatitis B transmission from mother to baby at birth, from family member to child, and also by sexual contact. It is statistically credited with the longer healthy lifetimes enjoyed by a majority of the American population. Advances in medical science and technology certainly improve medical interventions, but a recent change in the philosophy of medical care is credited with improving the population's health on a macro level. As the cost of health care in America soared during the 1990s and 2000s, the health care community's focus shifted from curative care to preventive medicine. Curative medicine focuses on curing existing diseases and conditions. In contrast, preventive medicine works by educating the community on healthy lifestyle habits, such as regular exercise, nutritious food choices, and abstention from smoking. The idea is to prevent or forestall disease rather than wait until someone falls ill before providing treatment; however, living healthy lifestyles is still a personal choice. Studies indicate that preventive health care reduces morbidity, and that a preventive approach not only thwarts diseases that are associated with unhealthy choices, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, but also creates strong immune systems to fight common illnesses like flu and cold viruses. Furthermore, people who do not get sick are more productive workers because they do not have as many sickness-related absences. This point is particularly important when considering vulnerable populations. For many people, especially those in the most at-risk groups, workdays lost to illness means days without pay. Financial instability detracts from a person's social status, which is a nonmaterial resource that contributes to vulnerability. Less social status means less access to community resources, such as health care and fresh foods. Lack of resource access leads to more illness, and so the cycle continues. Many individuals have limited access to health care, which includes the inability to access medical clinics for reasons of proximity, the lack of insurance coverage, and financial constraints such as inability to pay for medical treatments. Preventive medicine focuses on educating people before they become ill, but resource accessibility restricts preventive medicine programs and responsive health care programs from reaching the most at-risk populations.
