7. A Unique Blockchain
7
Corda revolutionizes two challenges faced by traditional blockchain technology
Privacy
Nodes should be able to transact and have the assurance of
validity and uniqueness but retain absolute privacy of the
transaction history
Interoperability
Privacy should not come at the expense of interoperability of Corda
nodes. Corda retains this privacy at an individual transaction level,
but allows any node to transact without creating islands of assets or
data
8. Corda Benefits
8
Immutability
Records stored in a cryptographic manner assures
lineage and evidence of tampering
Mutual verification
Shared facts are agreed upon by a variety of
consensus mechanisms
Consistent Shared Facts on Ledger
Records of shared facts including financial agreements
are consistent across entities, only with those party to
the transactions
Smart Contracts
Business Logic is encapsulated and executes in a
deterministic, tamper evident manner
Security & Privacy
Transaction information is propagated only to relevant
nodes to ensure strict data privacy, whilst maintaining
the assurance of validity and uniqueness
Interoperability
Corda retains this privacy but allows any node to
transact without creating islands of assets or liquidity
issues
Easy Integration
Re-use existing developer skills and make integration
with bank systems easy and safe. Contracts can be
coded in modern, standard languages like Java
Transparency
Consensus achieved at individual deal level, rather than
system level. Supports a variety of consensus
mechanisms
9. Corda : the Most Advanced Enterprise Blockchain
is an open source, financial-grade blockchain that records, manages, and executes institutions’ legal, business, and financial agreements in perfect
synchrony with their counterparties. Corda is the only blockchain designed specifically for industry, prioritizing privacy, scalability, interoperability and ease of
integration. Corda is the result of close collaboration between the blockchain pioneering firm R3 and its ecosystem of 200+ of the world’s leading institutions,
technology companies and Fortune 500 companies
was developed from the ground up to provide a robust enterprise grade solution specifically for financial markets but with
rich functionality that can be applied across all industries
Blockchain for the enterprise
Corda harnesses the most appropriate elements of traditional blockchain
technology and fine-tunes them for enterprise usage
Consensus on the data that matters
Corda is designed to bring participants to consensus on shared facts,
removing the need for costly and time-consuming reconciliation
Privacy with provenance
Unlike traditional blockchain platforms, Corda minimizes information
leakage by only sharing transaction data with participants that require it
Interoperable applications to optimize entire industries
Corda is the gateway to a vibrant network of blockchain applications for
finance and commerce, known as CorDapps, that solve complex, real world
problems.
Transform legacy infrastructure
Enterprise adoption will be a phased appraoch and Corda has been
built to easily integrate and interoperate with the systems that run
your business.
Only Corda enables businesses to transact openly and flawlessly with all their
business partners, without trapped assets or islands of information. Corda‘s open
network delivers the privacy participants expect by leveraging the Corda network‘s
common standards and open governance model.
A globally interoperable network
9
10. Corda is the 3rd Generation Blockchain: Open & Interoperable, With Privacy
Corda’s architecture includes several core differences vs legacy blockchains
Corda prioritizes global connectivity + business privacy + asset mobility + network efficiency
GENERATION 1
Bitcoin / Ethereum
• Public permission-less blockchain
• Poor privacy
• Network inefficiency
GENERATION 2
IBM Fabric / Quorum
• Multiple Silo Private Networks
• Stranded Assets
GENERATION 3
Corda network
• Public blockchain + identity
• Multiple private business networks
• Transferable assets
10
11. Why is Corda THE platform of choice for your business?
Feature Corda Ethereum Fabric How is this relevant?
Openness Open environment where nodes can
freely discover and transact with each
other; with onboarding managed by a
governance authority
Totally open system allowing
arbitrary entrance and exit
Closed, private networks with
one application per network
that inhibits interoperability
Corda with it’s open but secure network design can
alone deliver the promise of Blockchain as Web 3.0
– a world where businesses can transact securely
while freely exchanging assets across inter/intra
organizational boundaries
Scalability Point-to-point real time communication Limited to 20 TPS on public
network
Channel architecture is major
limitation ; massive
operational complexity
Corda design addresses real-world business
scenarios where a network of parties can interact
securely and near-instantaneously
Privacy Only parties involved in a transaction
have access to transaction data
Standard model has all data
public on the n/w – confusing
privacy and scalability roadmap
Highly complex channel
configurations that don’t
solve for scalability issues
Corda is built for business as it allows the entire
supply chain to connect and operate seamlessly and
securely
Consensus Notary services to address double spend
problem that verifies a transaction is
valid and unique. Pluggable consensus
mechanism
Proof of work with the entire
ledger coming to consensus on
the validity of a transaction
Consensus as a service in the
network by pre-defined
nodes (ordering service)
Corda comprehensively solves for the “double
spend” problem while allowing for complete
flexibility in choosing the consensus mechanism as
well as service
Shared Logic Allows arbitrary mix of assets in
contracts
Interop between public apps but
no privacy
No universal interoperability Only Corda allows transfer of assets across the
supply chain. Ex placement of trade credit insurance
and use the policy generated as proof of insurance
to procure better financing terms
Legal validity of
contracts
Contracts designed to reflect real world
contracts
Anonymous public network not
architected for data privacy and
sovereignty
No notion of a general
network architecture for data
privacy, sovereignty etc.
Placed contracts have legal validity and can be used
for claims adjudication when implemented on Corda
12. Industry Opinion: B3i, The Blockchain Insurance Industry Initiative, Selects
Corda
“We did the prototype and market testing with 38 companies. This was built in
a test environment and at some point we recognised that in order to bring this
into production, we had to do a review of the criteria, what is important to get
this into an enterprise-ready product. Our evaluation led to the conclusion that
Corda, for our use case, is the best technology and the one where we think we
can have the quickest time to market.”
“What we really liked about the Corda design is that they share information
only on a transaction level between parties, so they are not putting transactions
into blocks and sharing transactions with parties that are not involved, and this
was very important to us. It’s crucial for us that transaction information is
private between counterparties.”
“The Corda platform offers the optimal solution in the market to deliver the B3i
roadmap and our industrywide insurance blockchain ecosystem. We are very
excited to continue our work with the Corda team.”
Markus Tradt, CTO, B3i
13. Partner Opinion: ChainThat, UK based ISV, selects Corda
“I don’t really see Enterprise Ethereum going anywhere for
Insurance.”
“With Hyperledger Fabric, there have been so many issues with
that, we’ve been on a long journey going through that. It has the
concept of channels and that would mean for a thousand trading
parties each one of those is going to secure the data, each one is
going to need it’s own individual channel between each party so
you can imagine how many different channels that could
potentially create for each party and that becomes unmanageable
and unscalable.”
“In our early days we started with Ethereum, moved onto Eris,
Hyperledger Fabric, Quorum and have now settled on R3’s
Corda.”
David Edwards, CEO, ChainThat
“The other drawback is that if you’ve got a contract that you’ve
created in Hyperledger Fabric, and you wanted to add a
participant into that contract, but you didn’t want them to see the
history of it, you’d then have to create a new contract to support
that. Whereas with the Corda platform, it’s method with the
unspent transaction outputs, allows us to maintain and control
who gets to see what on a peer-to-peer basis.”
“So we started on JP Morgan’s Quorum quite early on, but we still had to put some
references back into the broadcast network, just to have that consistent layer. So
you’ve basically got the public network and the private side of it. Everything on the
private side still needs to be referenced back to the public side of it, and therefore
you’ve still got some metadata related to the fact that transactions have taken
place.”

17. The first 4 weeks of the project will guide
participants from the basics of Corda, through a
deep dive of the use case and prototype design on
Corda, to Corda Networks. The materials will be
distributed online, and each section will end with a
review Q&A webinar to discuss any questions or
points of interest
Once every participant has deployed a node to
Corda Testnet, we will run the Global Trial – a
week long testing of the application, enabling
participants to interact and fully test the
functionality of the prototype as it would run in
production, but in a risk free environment.
R3 account managers bring on board their clients to
participate in the project. We ask that at least one
business and one technical person join from each
institution. The project kicks off with initial onboarding
to the wiki and a welcome webinar to lay out the
structure of the coming weeks.
When the trial concludes, we will collect feedback and
distribute the closure document and an animation
showing the interactions that took place over the
week. R3 will organize a press release. Following this,
we will host a series of webinars to discuss next steps
with the participants and partners.
When participants are up to speed on Corda and the
prototype design, we will move to deployment of the
application to Corda Testnet. This will be supported by
documentation and office hours with the R3 Tech lead.
R3 are happy to provide institutions with credits for
Microsoft Azure to use free of charge.
