Paramedics started the "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) campaign to address not knowing who to contact when coming across cell phones at accident scenes. The idea is to store the name of an emergency contact under the label "ICE" in your phone so emergency services can easily find and call that person. This allows them to quickly notify those close to you what has happened. Many people now list emergency contacts as ICE1, ICE2, etc. for multiple numbers to ensure the right contact is reached during crises when the phone's owner cannot communicate themselves.
