2. ABOUT US
We are one of the world’s leading global health
research institutes.
Based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, we are committed to solving public
health problems facing low- and middle-income countries
through innovative scientific research – including laboratory-
based, clinical, epidemiological and health systems research. By
developing, testing and assessing the implementation of
interventions specifically designed for resource-poor settings, we
aim to improve the health and wellbeing of people living in the
world’s poorest nations. For more than 50 years, we have been
carrying out high-quality research and promoting the uptake of
evidence-based interventions. Our initial focus was on diarrhoeal
disease, but we now study multiple infectious diseases, other
threats to public health, and methods of healthcare delivery. Our
work has had a profound impact on health policy and practice
both locally and globally – and this remains our key objective for
the future.

years, we have been carrying out high-quality
research and promoting the uptake of evidence-

In the 1960s, a group of American and Bangladeshi
scientists embarked on a barge, turned floating
cholera hospital that drifted around a cholera-prone
sub-district of Bangladesh aiming to treat patients
and save lives. The barge used to float
around Matlab – the sub-district around
50 kilometres away from the capital Dhaka – which
was then a low-lying marshy land. People
at Matlab suffered frequent cholera outbreaks
leading to a high loss of lives. The doctors and
researchers aimed to improve the treatment of
cholera patients, who were brought to the floating
hospital from remote areas by boat and to find
appropriate preventive strategies for control of
cholera including evaluation of vaccines against
cholera.

OUR RESEARCH
Our research addresses some of the world's
most pressing health challenges.
It is focused on seven areas of unmet need of particular relevance to low- and middle-income countries. Our studies
in Bangladesh take advantage of an extensive research infrastructure, including high-quality laboratory facilities, a
major hospital and other clinical facilities, and multiple well-established field sites. We also maintain multiple
collaborations with research groups and implementing partners in both the global North and the global South.

Approach
icddr,b is uniquely placed to generate a better understanding of most pressing health problems facing Bangladesh
and the global South, and to develop effective solutions to those problems.
We aim to carry out high-quality research that addresses health priorities and ultimately influences policy and
practice. To achieve these aims, our work is guided by a set of key principles:
- Understanding local context: icddr,b is embedded within a developing country, and we are
intimately familiar with health and health systems challenges in such settings. We understand the socio-economic
and cultural determinants of health, as well as local health priorities.
- Developing practical solutions: We use our local knowledge to develop and evaluate
interventions specifically designed to work in resource-poor settings.
- Generating evidence to support wider use: We emphasise rigorous testing and scalability,
to generate evidence relevant not only to Bangladesh but also to other low- and middle-income countries.
- Focusing on translation: We are committed to translating research into policy and practice. We
have vast experience of disseminating and translating scientific evidence for use by policy-makers, programme
managers and the scientific community.
- Networking globally: Our researchers are extensively networkedwith leading research institutions in
North America, Europe and Australasia. We also contribute to many regional networks.
- Building an infrastructure for world-class research: We are committed to
maintaining research platforms enabling us to undertake a full spectrum of research. Our work spans population-
based studies and demographic surveillance, large-scale clinical trials, hospital-based clinical studies, social
science, and laboratory research.

Effectiveness, they provide long-term core funds to icddr,b to support the advancement of our strategic plan.
Representatives from each of the development agencies meet regularly with icddr,b to monitor progress and
discuss emerging research priorities and outputs. Every year, icddr,b reports performance against an agreed log
frame and a joint donor report is commissioned to monitor progress.
icddr,b is also grateful to the Government of Bangladesh for its long-term financial support.
