2. Why classifications?
• Classification is the process by which the complexity of phenomena is
reduced by arranging them into categories according to some
established criteria for one or more purposes.
• Purpose of classification are
Communication with others about the disease
Eg., 6A20.01 -- SCHIZOPHRENIA , FIRST EPISODE , in PARTIAL
REMISSION
Control refers to the treatment and prevention of the disease
Comprehension which refers to understanding the cause of the
disorder.

3. Classification can be done by various ways,
By clinical syndrome --> SCHIZOPHRENIA
By pathological process --> ALZHEIMERS'S DEMENTIA
By deviating from normal --> PERSONALITY DISORDERS
By hypothetical process --> DISSOCIATIVE DISORDER
By etiology --> PTSD

6. SIMILARITIES
• Both are officially recognized manuals for categorization
and diagnosis.
• Not self-diagnosis material.
• Used by qualified health professionals.
• Attempts are being made to further harmonize them.

members of the corresponding DSM‐5 Workgroups.
• The ICD and DSM are now closer than at any time in past.
• Even then, there are some ICD‐11 disorder categories that do not
appear in DSM‐5, and some DSM‐5 disorder categories that do not
appear in the ICD‐11.
