This assignment is designed to develop critical thinking, written and visual communication, and empirical and quantitative, and social responsibility skills. The primary focus will be to assess social responsibility. A component of social responsibility is the ability to demonstrate intercultural competence, which is the ability to identify, compare and contrast one’s own cultural patterns with others; understand diverse cultures and effectively communicate in a variety of cultural contexts.
This assignment will require students to analyze and interpret a primary or secondary document that includes quantitative data (e.g. graphs or other visual illustrations) using sociological terminology in an essay format. The following writing assignment is meant to help you use the concepts you have learned in this class to explore and analyze an important current issue in our society. As you write your paper, focus your attention on how you as an individual can respond to this current issue using the sociological imagination.
After reading the assigned article, you will write an essay, 250 words minimum; using Standard English and submit electronically on eCampus. The minimum requirements for this assignment are to:
1. Draw three main conclusions from the article;
2. Describe two important elements of data presented on the charts/graph and briefly interpret each data element;

The Case
First Health of Oregon (a fictional company) is the leading hospital and health care system in Oregon. Dedicated to offering superior care, education, research, and service, their 12,000 staff members serve over 300,000 patients annually with a wide spectrum of needs, from cardiovascular surgery to preventative medicine to health education programs. They also have a 98% patient approval rating, one of the highest in the nation.
FHO prides itself on being a rewarding, respectful place to work. Employees have a great deal of autonomy and privacy, a supportive work environment, generous benefit packages, and many opportunities to take optional health and other self-improvement classes.
Recently, FHO has been facing serious financial challenges that require immediate changes to its employee health care package. Like employers nationwide, FHO has faced double-digit increases each year in the cost of the health insurance provided as a part of employee benefits. Despite optional wellness programs available to all employees, the FHO workforce has the same rates of unhealthy behavior (smoking, obesity, etc.) and related health problems as the rest of the nation, and its insurance costs have remained high.

This Writing Assignment is required to provide students with the opportunity to:
• Investigate a “subtopic” of special interest associated with any of the major topics addressed during the course.
• Acquire in depth knowledge about a “subtopic” of choice – expanding one’s knowledge base beyond the basic course curriculum.
• Reflect on facts, theories, and opinions associated with the subtopic of choice. Develop or change an opinion about the subject.
• Communicate knowledge about chosen topic, offering learning community members an opportunity to increase their knowledge on a subtopic topic associated with the base course curriculum.
• Communicate one’s opinion on the subtopic, using critical thinking skills to form the opinion and writing skills to communicate one’s thoughts.

Law firms are trying to solicit clients. In Employment law, law firms usually represent either employers or workers - few represent both. As such, their web sites are designed to attract the clients they seek to represent. Therefore, the information contained therein may not be completely accurate as the information provided may be skewed to either a management or employee perspective.
Websites such as Wikipedia or ehow
Information found on those sites may not be reliable.
2. Organize and develop your writing assignment
Use the following format: Overview, Opinion Statements, Resource Citations.
Use the headings to divide your work into the 3 required areas in your paper.
Overview
Provide an overview of your topic using at least two resources.
Highlight the most important concepts.
The overview should be no more than 500 words. That’s about 7 – 8 average length paragraphs.
Do not place your opinions in the overview. This is an academically oriented portion of the assignment. Your opinions are welcome in the next portion of the paper.Your overview MUST include citation of sources within the text of the document. You are not the originator of the information being presented. The authors must be identified. Failing to provide citations within the content of your overview is considered plagiarism.

Given the material you’ve organized and presented in the overview, offer your thoughts on specific aspects of the topic or the topic in general. Use higher order critical or creative thought!

Summary of the Assignment:
Task: In this assignment, you will write a technical description for a non-specialized
audience. You will explain to a non-technical audience how something works. You will
choose an object or a process with which you are familiar. You will describe this object
or process to an audience that has little or no background of the subject.
Length: 500-800 words, single-spaced
Graphics: You must include at least one graphic.

o all graphics should be labeled

In our class in LEO, if you select Content, you will see a section labelled sample papers for
WRTG 393.
If you select that section, you will see some sample white papers written by previous students in
WRTG 393.
Brief Description and Strategies:
Keep in mind that you are not writing instructions on how to do something. You wrote
instructions for writing assignment #1. For writing assignment #2, if you describe a process, you
may want to describe a process that does not involve direct human action. This approach will
help prevent you from writing another set of instructions for this assignment. If you describe a
process, you will describe an activity or phenomenon that takes place. For example, you could
describe how the heart pumps blood in the human body. But you could not give instructions on
how to take someone’s blood.
Your description will include graphics. The description will use visual detail in both words and
images. You might consider one of the following two strategies:
provide one main graphic and refer to parts in the graphic when writing your technical
description
provide many graphics, integrating each graphic as you write the various parts of the
technical description
Examples of topics for this assignment include the following:
You are an auto mechanic. You could write a description of how spark plugs work to an
audience of non-mechanics. You would not write a set of instructions on how to install
spark plugs. You would describe how spark plugs work.
You work in technical support at a computer store. You could write a description of how
a graphics card works to an audience that is not familiar with computers. You would not
write a set of instructions on how to install a graphics card. You would describe how
graphics cards work.
You are in a branch of the military. You could write a description of how a function of
your unit operates to a non-military audience. You would not write a set of instructions
on how to do something in the military unit. You would describe how a function or
process in the military unit operates.
You might describe a piece of equipment that you included in your set of instructions for

This assignment is designed to develop critical thinking, written and visual communication, and empirical and quantitative, and social responsibility skills. The primary focus will be to assess social responsibility. A component of social responsibility is the ability to demonstrate intercultural competence, which is the ability to identify, compare and contrast one’s own cultural patterns with others; understand diverse cultures and effectively communicate in a variety of cultural contexts.
This assignment will require students to analyze and interpret a primary or secondary document that includes quantitative data (e.g. graphs or other visual illustrations) using sociological terminology in an essay format. The following writing assignment is meant to help you use the concepts you have learned in this class to explore and analyze an important current issue in our society. As you write your paper, focus your attention on how you as an individual can respond to this current issue using the sociological imagination.
After reading the assigned article, you will write an essay, 250 words minimum; using Standard English and submit electronically on eCampus. The minimum requirements for this assignment are to:
1. Draw three main conclusions from the article;
2. Describe two important elements of data presented on the charts/graph and briefly interpret each data element;
3. Describe the ways in which this can be defined as a personal trouble or social issue. Be sure to cite specific evidence from the article to support your position (i.e. be sure to include other cultural perspectives in addition to your own);
4. Explore how the social phenomena discussed in the article may or may not contribute to human suffering and or social disorganization (i.e. be sure to include other cultural perspectives in addition to your own);
5. Based on your exploration on prompts numbers 1-4 make three recommendations including, but not limited to:

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
