The Mexican axolotl is an amphibian that spends its entire life underwater, weighing only 2-4 ounces and up to twelve inches long with slimy skin. Unlike most salamanders, the axolotl never loses its gills and is only found in the wild in one lake complex in Mexico, where it is a carnivore that eats insects, fish, and molluscs.
