The document discusses the human person as an embodied spirit with three key characteristics:
1. Self-awareness - A human person is aware of themselves and their existence as a living being experiencing the present moment.
2. Self-determination - People have the ability to make choices and decisions based on their own preferences and regulate their actions. However, decisions have consequences.
3. Interaction with others - As social beings, humans have the capacity to interact with other individuals and form relationships.

Introduction to Philosophy of
the Human Person
2. ACTIVITY 1
Imagine that you are tasked to write a description of the
human species, how will you describe human beings to aliens?
HELLO, WE ARE HUMANS OF EARTH
6. Looking at the chimpanzee, however, you may see a number of shared traits or
features. We both have eyes, a nose, a mouth, a body, though this shaped in
different ways. Though living is an essential feature of being human, it cannot
be the defining feature that sets us apart and makes us human persons. So, how
do you differ from the chimpanzee?
7. • Is your pet truly aware of what is happening around it?
• Can your pet truly feel emotions in the same way that you do?
• Is your pet capable of reflection? Can it question its nature or identity
as a dog?
• Can your pet reflect in its actions and behavior? Do you think it can
feel guilt or satisfaction in the same way you do?
9. Man is the general term commonly used to refer to the entire human
race. Other related terms include humanity, mankind, and
humankind.
Human refers to man as species – Homo sapiens sapiens or modern
human beings. The term human being is also used to distinguish
man from other animals.
What is Man and Human?
10. Man is a vegetative, sentient and rational organism.
a) As a vegetative organism, man, like the plants, is subject to
nutrition, growth and reproduction.
b) As a sentient being, man, like the animals, has sense –
knowledge and appetency.
c) As a rational being, man, unlike any other creature on earth, has
rationality which implies cognitive and appetitive powers.
11. Man is also an animal but unlike them, he, alone, possesses these
characteristic features: the ability to think and reason, to organize
things in order to accomplish ends such as the whole world of arts and
crafts, manufacturing and industry.
Only man has oral and written language which enables him to
communicate and preserve ideas. He, alone, establishes permanent
institutions corresponding to his own nature, such as family, civil society,
law, etc.
12. Refers to a human being granted recognition of certain rights,
protection, responsibilities, and dignity, above all.
Refers to the human person as the totality of an individual,
possessing awareness, self-determination, and the capacity to
interact with others and with himself or herself.

which make the aim he pursues possible of attainment.
a. Rational
b. Conscious
c. Aware
d. Sentient
19. Activity 2
Think of a real-life situation that
shows a man as:
• Vegetative Organism
• Sentient Being
• Rational Being
22. • “Self- awareness refers to person having a clear perception of oneself,
including his or her thoughts, emotions, identity, and actions (Abella, 2016).”
• It is the ability of one’s consciousness to look inward thus discovering the
presence of a self.
• A person is aware of both his or her surroundings and himself or herself.
• A human person knows that he or she is living an experience and is an active
participant in this experience .
Self-awareness
23. I am a person.
I am alive.
I exist.
I am here. I am present.
I am living at this very moment.
24. • The self enables us to experience an “inner world” that is defined by
our personal thoughts and ideas.
• This allows us to experience interiority, which is the quality of being
focused on one’s inner life and identity.
26. • The capability of persons to make choices and decisions based on
their own preferences, monitor and regulate their actions, and be goal
oriented and self-directed.
• However since our actions are based on our decisions we have to
realized that every decision has a consequence(s).
• The result of our freedom is morality which is “the goodness or
badness of an act” (Abella 2016)
Self-determination
27. Imagine a small boy, Carlo, playing in the living room of their
house while his mother is in the kitchen. Suddenly, the boy accidentally
bumps into a table, causing a vase to fall. Upon hearing the sound of
something crashing to the floor, Carlo’s mother immediately goes into
the living room and sees him standing near the broken vase. Carlo’s
mother asks him, “Did you break the vase?” What do you think his
answer will be?
28. Carlo plays in the room.
Carlo bumps into the
table.
Vase falls to the floor
and breaks.
Mother goes into the living
room to investigate.
Mother ask him if he
broke the vase.
Carlo responds
???
Editor's Notes
Though we share a number of similarities with other members of the animal kingdom, there are certain things we possess – traits and capabilities – that are not found in other organisms.
Species - a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding.
Appetency - a longing or desire.
Man is open to the world, not limited to any particular environment for his experience and behavior.
Dignity - the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect.
We are not determined by others. Because we have interiority; we can direct the course of our own life. This is what we call self-determination which is “the capability of persons to make choices and decisions based on their own preferences, monitor and regulate their actions, and be goal oriented and self-directed”
Thus human beings are free
There are some actions that are good because they lead to good consequences and some actions are bad because they lead to bad consequences.
