Introduction
 The “human augmentation”, also known as “human enhancement”,
basically focuses on creating cognitive and physical improvements in
the human body.
 Human enhancement aims to bring improvements to the human
condition to move beyond a state of mere good health.
This requires a rethinking into the therapeutic goals of medicine.
Enhancements are improvements of human traits which include mental
and physical attributes and abilities and behavioural dispositions.
Types
 Physical Enhancement
 Cognitive Enhancement
 Personality Enhancement
 Cosmetic Enhancement
Physical Enhancement
Enhancements of human physical capacities, which are capacities for
physical action and for the maintenance of a good physical
condition.
Imagine when.... ?????
Machines work alongside humans to give them the strength, stamina
and precision of a machine, protect them from accident and injury,
compensate for their disabilities and old age, help them recover from
infirmities, teach them to be more efficient.
Cognitive Enhancement
Enhancements of human perceptual and cognitive capacities.
They enhance human abilities for sensory perception, memory,
decision making, thought and imagination.
Cognitive stimulants enhance either by increasing the amount of
neuron activity or by releasing neuro-modulators.
The following are the types of cognitive enhancement prevalent
today:
Modafinil:
It is a wakefulness promoting agent approved for the treatment
of narcolepsy as well as excessive daytime sleepiness in sleep
apnoea and shift work sleep disorders.
Beta-blockers:
It is mainly propranolol are used for enhancing performance
anxiety.
Personality and Cosmetic Enhancement
Enhancements of mood, personality traits, and (social) behavioural
tendencies, such as tendencies to tendencies to have positive moods,
to have greater confidence, or to be more sympathetic.
The CASIE (Computer Assisted Social Interaction Enhancer) by Dues
Ex serves to make most conversations a bit easier, and adds a bit of
replay value to the game thanks to its unique dialogue options.
Augmentation of anti depressants with bright light therapy in case of
Borderline personality order (BPD) has resulted in significant results.
Cosmetic enhancements include aesthetic enhancements of the
features of the body.
 Existing cosmetic enhancements include surgery procedures like
eyelid, breast surgery with a focus on visual appeal & beauty.
Application
Implants
DuoSkin Tattoo
Tissue Engineering
Prosthetics(Third thumb)
Exoskeletons(Body Suits)
Motion savvy
eSsight
Advantages
Technology is strong and, more durable and has more capabilities
Enhances human ability and performance.
Integrating the body with machines improves performance and speed.
Pairs human intelligence and emotion with mechanical efficiency and
power.
Disadvantages
It will Create a biological divide.
It violates the natural order of things.
It is ecological and social disaster.
Ethical issues regarding the idea that humans are becoming “less
human” and more robotic.
Conclusion
 Human Enhancement Techniques are likely to engender an
introduction of new inequalities into society and enable the
development of humans that end up harming as well as improving the
quality of life.
However whether to have a reason to promote a particular
enhancement will require wisdom, dialogue, good scientific research,
good public policy and academic debate.
