Client-side rendering enable many things. We have independent frontend and backend deploys. It’s possible to update sections of the page without re-render everything. It’s easier for teams to develop their own part of the same page (widgets). And it’s possible to develop rich user interactions.
However, we also got new problems. It’s easier to break rendering since we have many run-times (all browsers) instead of one (the server) and JavaScript is not fault tolerant. There’s a really high rate of change in the JS library space. We get a longer time to first render. And client-side web applications are hard to evolve.
In this talk I will show a simpler way, using a toolbox of techniques: a gateway web server, pjax, client-side includes, and custom elements.

In this talk, I will show a simpler way using a toolbox of techniques: pjax, client-side includes, and server-side driven client refreshes. They are useful both by themselves and together. Very briefly, pjax avoids refreshing the whole page on each link click, by hijacking the links and requesting a partial HTML view over ajax. Client-side includes allow you to declaratively include other HTTP resources over ajax. And server-side driven client refreshes enables fine-grained updates after succesful form posts over ajax.

Forget the Web Backend: Static Serverless + Client-Side Code for the Win!Matti Petrelius
My talk for TechDays Finland 2018:
Recent improvements in client-side technologies allow for new hosting possibilities that do not require as much from the server. For example, static web hosting is an approach where files are delivered directly to the client, without needing to write or deploy backend logic. And while the frontend has been in a churn, the cloud has had some really interesting improvements as well with services like Azure Functions. In this session I will show you how to build, deploy, secure, and monitor a serverless web application from scratch.
What’s right & wrong with WCF-WebHTTP Adapter?BizTalk360
This presentation is from the Integration Monday session organized by Integration User Group held on October 03, 2016. In this session, Datacom's Integration Consultant Mark Brimble and Principal Integration Architect Colin Dijkgraaf show us why the WCF-WebHTTP adapter requires some workarounds. The pair start the session with reference to a recent project that they worked on. During the course of the session, Colin and Mark list all the issues they had to overcome in this project, and then demonstrate the issues and workarounds using BizTalk 2016. The issues include Azure service Bus relays, error handling for REST services and JSON to XML pipeline parsing.
A Smooth Transition to HTML5 Using MVVMChris Bannon
How difficult is it to port Silverlight applications to HTML5? That is the question we hear every day at ComponentOne. Instead of speculating about it, we decided to sit down and try it. Today we will discuss the process and tools we used when doing so. The approach we took was to use the MVVM pattern (from Silverlight) when developing the HTML5/JavaScript version. By choosing this method we were able to port our data access and UI layers quite easily. We take advantage of tools like KnockoutJS and Wijmo to make the process even easier. Our developers were able to minimize the cost of learning new paradigms in this migration by reusing most of their knowledge. What we ended up with was nearly identical applications in Silverlight and HTML5. Come learn how you can smoothly transition to HTML5!
As soon as we start working on an API, architecture issues arise. Many mistaken common beliefs turn out to be fiction in this area. A poorly designed API architecture will lead to misuse or – even worse – not be used at all by its intended clients: application developers.
To facilitate and accelerate design and development of your APIs, we share our vision and beliefs with you in this Reference Card. They come from our direct experience on API projects.

Introduction to (web) APIs - definitions, examples, concepts and trendsOlaf Janssen
This story is about the added value of APIs (application programming interfaces) for modern businesses, developers and software consumers. It deals with API-fundamentals and shows how APIs are the cornerstones of modern business development (BizDev2.0). By looking at casestudies from Google Maps, Twitter, Amazon, eBay, Moo, Flickr, Netflix and other web2.0-companies, it becomes clear how APIs add value for all parties on the modern web.

#JaxLondon keynote: Developing applications with a microservice architectureChris Richardson
The micro-service architecture, which structures an application as a set of small, narrowly focused, independently deployable services, is becoming an increasingly popular way to build applications. This approach avoids many of the problems of a monolithic architecture. It simplifies deployment and let’s you create highly scalable and available applications. In this keynote we describe the micro-service architecture and how to use it to build complex applications. You will learn how techniques such as Command Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS) and Event Sourcing address the key challenges of developing applications with this architecture. We will also cover some of the various frameworks such as Spring Boot that you can use to implement micro-services.
Open API and API Management - Introduction and Comparison of Products: TIBCO ...Kai Wähner
In October 2014, I had a talk at Jazoon in Zurich, Switzerland: "A New Front for SOA: Open API and API Management as Game Changer"
Open API represent the leading edge of a new business model, providing innovative ways for companies to expand brand value and routes to market, and create new value chains for intellectual property. In the past, SOA strategies mostly targeted internal users. Open APIs target mostly external partners.
This session introduces the concepts of Open API, its challenges and opportunities. API Management will become important in many areas, no matter if business-to-business (B2B) or business-to-customer (B2C) communication. Several real world use cases will discuss how to gain leverage due to API Management. The end of the session shows and compares API management products from different vendors such as TIBCO API Exchange, IBM, Apigee, 3scale, WSO2, MuleSoft, Mashery, Layer 7, Vordel
During the last few years, companies started to embrace APIs.
In FRANCE, the API boom really started lately, in 2014.
Today every company wants to build its API.
We had been involved in several API projects : and the goal of this session is to share with you common pitfall that could compromise your API strategy.
What’s behind a high quality web API? Ensure your APIs are more than just a ...Kim Clark
Web APIs have now become as important as websites for some enterprises. Dreaming up an attractive set of data resources to expose to your consumers is a critical step, but it's just the beginning. In the world of APIs, standards are rare, so common conventions are everything. Which should you choose, and how do you apply them to your data model? What architecture will ensure your APIs are robust, scalable, and secure? How do you ensure data integrity in an environment without transactionality? How will you prepare for huge changes in scale? How do you join your API world with your existing enterprise integration and SOA? Attendees will learn design practices to ensure their APIs are both attractive and consumable.

We then described the typical API lifecycle:
plan/design > build/integrate > operate/manage > share/engage.
We covered many best practices and tools for each stage and gave practical demos about how to secure and manage APIs.
Jarkko Moilanen, APInf, “Get Control of Your IoT Cruisers” - Mindtrek 2017Mindtrek
"Amount of data in IoT devices increases to new heights during the following years – we’ve just witnessed the beginning. Data lakes become oceans. Data oceans are filled with transport which so far has been “boats” capable of small scale service. Future IoT systems and ecosystems required cruise ships with a lot of services, automation and different service plans. How to manage the cruise ship? API management fits in to traditional solutions, but real-time APIs are a bit different case."

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
