The document provides information about the High School Team Challenge, which encourages high schools to form teams to participate in the Race for the Cure and raise money for breast cancer. Schools can win cash prizes for raising the most funds or having the highest student participation. It outlines the 10 steps for team captains to follow, including getting approval, registering the team online, recruiting members, fundraising, and thanking participants. The goal is to raise awareness and funds to support breast cancer research and treatment in the local community.

Supercharge Your Corporate Donations with Matching Gifts - Frontstream and Do...Double the Donation
For many nonprofits, employee matching gifts are often one of the most overlooked sources of fundraising. Due to limited information about donors, corporate giving programs, and a lack of communication, it's difficult for nonprofits to cultivate matching gift funds.
Given these challenges, too many matching funds slip through nonprofits' fingers. In fact, an estimated $6-$10 billion in matching gift funds goes unclaimed every year! Don't miss out on your share.

2. High School Team Challenge
What is High School Team Challenge?
The High School Team Challenge encourages high schools in our 8 county Affiliate service
area to join the fight against breast cancer by fundraising at their school and forming a
School Team to participate in the Race for the Cure®.
Win Cash Award Prizes for you school!
$1,000 Prize Award for the high school team that raises the most money
$500 Prize Award to the high school team that has the most student participants based on
the percentage of school enrollment. These prizes are made possible by
proud sponsor of the 2012 High School Team Challenge
Winning teams will also receive an award trophy.
How does it Work?
High schools form their own team to compete with other high school’s teams throughout
Southwest Michigan. Each school will need a Student Team Leader and a Faculty Advisor
Co-Team Leader who are interested and willing to organize a team. Anyone from your high
school, students and staff can join your team. Students receive discounted entry fees of
$15.00 for untimed and $20 for timed. Prizes will be awarded to the high school team that
raises the most money and to the school that has the most student participants (based on a
percentage of school enrollment).
How do we Fundraise?
Individual schools may decide to run this program in any way they feel will generate the
greatest response. Many schools across the country run it as a general school fundraiser or
have it as a program that the student council or another school group coordinates. It is up
to you to tailor the High School Team Challenge to suit your school’s needs.
The goals of High School Team Challenge (HSTC) are:
• Increase breast cancer awareness among high school students
• Raise funds for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment for
residents of Southwest Michigan
• Increase participation of high school students at the Race for the Cure®
• Have fun while positively affecting the community!
HSTC is a great opportunity for high school students to earn service-learning hours and
have an impact on our local communities. 75% of the net funds raised at the Komen
Southwest Michigan Race for the Cure® stay right here in Southwest Michigan. The
remaining 25% of money raised at the Race goes to fund breast cancer research for the
cures at the national level.

We’re here to help you organize your team and answer any questions you might have.

3. TEAM CAPTAIN’S RESPONSIBILITIES/TIPS
STEP ONE: Get administrative approval
Since you will be conducting a fundraiser, one that involves students, you will need to follow your
school’s protocol. Do not assume because it is for a charitable cause that it will be approved. You will
also need to get fundraiser approval because of the financial award involved. ***If your school raises
the most funds, you will win $1,000. If your team has the greatest percentage of student
participants, based on school enrollment, you will win $500!
STEP TWO: Appoint captains and name your team
Especially if you have a large school, or anticipate a great deal of involvement, do no try to do all of the
work for your team by yourself. Recruit one or more student captains. Involve a student or two, and
maybe even another staff member. The more hands you have working and minds you have
brainstorming, the more you will accomplish. Create a clever team name that you can use on team t-
shirts, fundraiser merchandise and advertising, and that will be used during the team registration
process. Example: Purple goes Pink
STEP THREE: Set goals for your team
The challenge aspect of the Race for high school teams is based on the amount of funds raised per team
as well as the percentage of each high school’s population who register for the team. You should set a
goal for each of these categories and record them on your team’s race web page (see STEP FOUR).
Remember, you could win a cash prize for your school!
STEP FOUR: Register your team on the Komen website and set up your team’s page
• As part of the team registration process, one team captain must register for the Race and have to
initiate the online registration process.
• Team members will not be able to register until this step is complete. So, you’ll need this
to be done before recruiting.
• Choose a username and password that is easy to remember and write it down. This will give you
future access to My Race Headquarters.
• REFER TO THE INCLUDED SHEET ON HOW TO SET UP YOUR TEAM’S
REGISTRATION SITE
STEP FIVE: Advertise and recruit team members
Anyone is allowed to register for your team and participate on race day as either a walker, a runner or a
volunteer. However, only those participants who are students will count toward your team’s
participation percentage (and your qualification for the $500 award).
• Make your own recruitment video or use the enclosed DVD to bring awareness to your team’s
recruitment efforts.
• Hold information sessions to orient potential team members with the Race for the Cure® and the
mission of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, and to answer any questions about the cause.
• Refer to the Advertising Ideas enclosed in this packet for other ideas.
• Once your team is registered, team members will need to register online or complete an offline
Race registration form and mail it. The offline form is included in this packet and can be copied for
distribution. The form is also in a downloadable format online.
• Students will need assistance from an adult to register with a credit card online.
• To qualify for HSTC awards, mail-in registration and donations are due MAY 7 and
online registrations and donations are due May 17.
Scan this QR code with your smart
phone and it will direct you right to
the SW MI race site.
4. STEP SIX: Inspire your team and design t-shirts
It’s important to energize your team members and get them excited about participating and fundraising
for the Race.
• Pick a theme or a person to walk/run for
• Hold a team party
• Make it fun by wearing a special hat or team t-shirt
• Encourage participants to set their own goal for fundraising.
• Use your team t-shirt as a fundraiser (see STEP 7)
• Print bookmarks that give directions on how to sign up online and hand them out to potential
team members
Ask for donations from businesses
• As worthy as the Race for the Cure® is, teenagers are still motivated to do good by incentives.
Many local businesses will donate merchandise, food, and gift cards for prizes for individual
participants. If you choose to solicit this type of donation, be sure to do it as early as possible since
there is often paperwork that needs to be completed and a waiting period for items. You will also need
to have your school’s Tax Exempt Code for that paperwork.
STEP SEVEN: Fundraise
Make sure, again, that you follow your school’s procedures for fundraiser approval. It is a good idea to
ask if it is possible for the school to set up a Race for the Cure® account in order to help you handle the
money that is brought in. This way, you can deposit any money from fundraising into the account and
a donation from that account can be made online or via check. It saves you a trip (or several) to the
bank and if a check is returned for non-sufficient funds, the school district can take action rather than
you. Do no allow door-to-door solicitation by students. (If donors want a tax receipt, the check
will need to be made out to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.)
STEP EIGHT: Stay organized and communicate with your team
Depending on how much involvement you get from participants and how far you take your fundraising
efforts, there can be a significant amount of work involved with establishing a team for the HSTC.
Following the provided calendar should help with your responsibilities.
• Keep a calendar separate of that once you determine specific dates for individual events.
• Keep track of your team’s registration and fundraising progress online.
• Remind team members to register and to do so early to avoid the late registration fee.
PACKET PICKUP SCHEDULE: See enclosed page on packet pickup
To help you get race day information and t-shirts out to your team members, Komen has arranged
for the following dates and times for one person on your team to pick up everything at once. There
are six locations to choose from for your convenience. You will need to sign up for one location by
emailing your preference to Linda.Law@wmich.edu by May 1.
May 14: St. Joseph: 5-8 p.m. at Panera Bread, 3269 Niles Rd.
May 15: Portage: 5-8 p.m. at Panera Bread, 5970 S. Westnedge

packet on May 19 will have to pick up their t-shirts and timing chips at the registration table ON
RACE DAY.
STEP NINE: Thank your team members
It’s amazing how far those two little words can go! So be creative in coming up with ideas to make
your team members feel important and appreciated for their contribution and their effort.
STEP TEN: Ask questions
We are here to help YOU! Feel free to contact the High School Team Challenge
chairs, Sue Hecht and Jodi Darland, at HSTC@komenswmichigan.org.

10. ADVERTISING SUGGESTIONSADVERTISING SUGGESTIONS
Here are the main types of advertising you will want to do for your team.
1. Team Member Recruitment: Anyone can join (students, staff, alumni, family, friends), but only the
students will be counted toward your participation percentage.
2. Fundraisers: If you plan to sell items to fundraise, reach out far and wide to sell them. Most staff members
will support causes such as this. So will students and parents
3. Donations: Let people throughout the community know how they can donate to your team’s general
donations and/or individual team member’s totals. You can collect the money or instruct them to donate
online.
SUGGESTED FORMS OF ADVERTISING:
1. Facebook – join the HSTC event site and set up your own team page
2. District website and email, school newsletters, newspaper, flyers for students to take home
3. Local TV news station(s) and/or local newspaper(s)
4. Komen Posters (print from CD or contact affiliate for copies) posted in district buildings and around
community
5. Team Fundraiser Posters
Photo of fundraiser items to post in each building within district
Photo of team holding a banner
Payment and ordering deadline information
STEP FIVE: UPLOADING CONTACTS AND SENDING PERSONALIZED EMAILS
Go to the Email page of your Participation Center and click Contacts on the right side of the page. Choose to
either Import contacts from your personal email account(s) or Add single contacts manually. Return to the Email
page and Compose Message or Email All. You can use a template of suggested messages or write your own
personal message in the blank space provided. Preview your message and click Send.
OTHER FEATURES IN PARTICIPANT CENTER:
• In addition to sending emails to your contacts, you can enhance your fundraising efforts by downloading
boundlessFundraising via Facebook.
• Send Thank You emails to anyone who donates to your personal page.
• View all of the available Fundraising Resources.
• Keep track of your personal fundraising progress, your team’s fundraising progress, and view the entire
roster of team members. You can also communicate with all team members via email from this site.
• Update your personal page or your team page at any time.
11. FUNDRAISING SUGGESTIONSFUNDRAISING SUGGESTIONS
Obviously, the possibilities for fundraising are infinite. Included in this section are some simple tips and ideas to
get your team started.
1. Sell items at as many places as possible: at athletic events; in the school store; via district wide email;
during school lunches; to friends, family, and community members
2. Suggested Fundraiser Items: Remember to keep fundraiser items reasonably priced, but also charge enough
that you are covering your costs while collecting money to put toward either your team’s general
donations, prizes and/or incentives for participants, or to recoup any out of pocket expenses related to the
team’s start up.
Team t-shirts, lanyards, stickers, spirit beads in pink, bracelets, key chains, scarves, hats, ribbons,
etc…
3. Recruitment Challenge:
Recruit athletes, clubs, classes by asking coaches and/or advisors to organize their own sub-group
within your team
Offer prizes for the group who has the greatest percentage of participants or who collects the most
donations, sells the most t-shirts, etc…
4. Donation Challenge: Have groups compete to collect donations in fun ways like coin jars and announce
the winners via email, pep assembly, daily announcements.
Teachers in individual buildings
High school teacher’s classes by block/period/hour
High school “grades” (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, staff)
5. T-shirt Design Contest: Have students design t-shirts, post the t-shirts in the school and/or community.
People vote for their favorite design by donating money to the design’s collection jar.
The design that collects the most money becomes the team’s logo and gets printed on team
paraphernalia.
All money collected goes toward the team’s general fund or toward the winner’s individual donations
if he/she registers as part of the team.
INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISING PRIZESINDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISING PRIZES
The success of the Race for the Cure® is dependent on the fundraising efforts of its participants and Susan G. Komen
for the Cure® wants to reward you for your efforts. In previous years, individual prizes for fundraising were awarded
at the race site. From now on, however, individuals not only claim their prizes online, but can also choose from a
variety of prizes depending on the amount of money raised. The more money you raise, the better the prizes for
which you are eligible. So, set a goal and don’t stop there!
To see what the prizes are available visit http://komen.summitmg.com/komen.

NAME High School will be entering the HIGH SCHOOL TEAM CHALLENGE, which was formed in an effort to
involve high school students in the fight against breast cancer through fundraising, awareness and participation in
the KOMEN SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN RACE FOR THE CURE ®. This event is critical to the Susan G.
Komen For the Cure’s ® efforts to save lives and end breast cancer. As always, it promises to be a true celebration
of life, as well as a time for us to remember those we have lost to breast cancer, but who will remain with us in
spirit.
Led by student and staff members, each high school joins together to form a team of students, faculty, staff and
alumni, as well as family and friends to walk or run the KOMEN SW MICHIGAN RACE FOR THE CURE ® on
SUNDAY MAY 20, 2012 AT 2 PM. If you can’t walk or run that afternoon, the Race is also looking for hundreds
of volunteers to help out leading up to the event and the day of. You can also donate under the name of a team
participant or to the general team fundraising effort.
Our goal this year for participants is GOAL NUMBER HERE. We would also like to raise a minimum of GOAL $
HERE. By striving to meet these goals, we have the opportunity to not only win trophies for our team and
individual prizes, but also $500-$1,000 for our school, because of the United Educational Credit Union’s generous
sponsorship of the HIGH SCHOOL TEAM CHALLENGE.
We encourage support from all of our community’s families and friends. If you are interested in participating,
