2. Why Should You Care? According to the CDC, there about I million new cases of genital warts each year. The HPV strains responsible for causing genital warts do not cause cancer, and vice versa. HPV types 6 and 11. HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, and 35 have been linked to cervical cancer. HPV is a group of over a hundred different viruses. With this, there are only 1% that cause genital warts.
3. Symptoms HPV has no signs or symptoms unless you have the strain with genital warts. You should always go to your annual pap smear as a woman and make sure to get tested for this disease. ASK!! You have to be proactive and ask your partner/partners if they have been tested.
5. How to Prevent it Using condoms alone can sometimes not be totally safe. There is a vaccine called Gardasil for women and men. It can help prevent some forms of HPV. The vaccine was 100% effective in preventing two strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer in clinical trials and 99% effecting against two HPV strains that cause genital warts.
6. If you ignore the risks…….. Even after treatment for genital warts they can still come back. HPV is frequently difficult to detect because genital warts are often skin colored and painless and rarely cause symptoms. HPV 16, one of two HPV strains that cause 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of head and neck cancers that are HPV-positive, was found in 72% of the throat tumors.
