Organizing Your Resume
 Chronological Resume – list most recent
job/experiences first back to previous ones;
education in similar order also.
 Advantage is that it shows growth in experience.
This is best for persons with continuous work
experience.
 Skills Resume – is organized around skills,
strengths and accomplishments. (See Figure 6.3)
 The advantage is that it emphasizes your
strengths. If you have limited work experience,
this is a good choice.
Résumé
DOs
 Use action verbs
 Use short, concise sentences
 Use #, %, $ amounts
 Keep résumé easy to read
 Keep résumé about one page
 Avoid negative information
 Use crisp, dark type, font size 12
 Avoid italics, underscores and other formatted type
 Use white paper
 Avoid slang words, proper grammar usage is critical
Résumé DON’Ts
 Do not use the pronouns such as I, me, my, etc.
 Do not include references
 Do not clutter your résumé with nonessential
information
 Do not make any misrepresentations
 Do not include personal information
 SSN, age, sex, height, weight, marital status,
photograph, etc.
Writing Cover Letters
 You should always include a cover letter for
your resume.
 Cover Letter – is a brief letter that introduces
you to the employer and explains why you are
sending your resume.
 The letter should reflect your understanding of
the company and how you may be able to
meet its needs.
 Emphasize facts that make you especially well
qualified for the job.
Organizing the Cover Letter
 It should be divided into three parts.
 The opening paragraph explains why you are
writing. Give title of the job you are interested
in.
 The body should persuade someone to hire
you. Highlight personal qualities, skills and
experiences that make you a good candidate.
 The closing paragraph tells how you will
follow up. Include your contact information.

Writing Cover Letters  You should always include a cover letter for your resume.  Cover Letter – is a brief letter that introduces you to the employer and explains why you are sending your resume.  The letter should reflect your understanding of the company and how you may be able to meet its needs.  Emphasize facts that make you especially well qualified for the job.
  • 30. Organizing the Cover Letter  It should be divided into three parts.  The opening paragraph explains why you are writing. Give title of the job you are interested in.  The body should persuade someone to hire you. Highlight personal qualities, skills and experiences that make you a good candidate.  The closing paragraph tells how you will follow up. Include your contact information.
