1. How to study Listening skill?
•What are YOUR problems in English
listening skill?
Problems in learning listening
1. Problems from the listeners
2. Problems from the listening material
3. Problems result from physical settings
1. Problems from the listeners
• Too nervous, little confident
• Lack of practice
• Lack of vocabulary, background knowledge about the topic
• Listen to word for word, try to understand every words
2. Problems from the listening material
• Unfamiliar topics
• Different accents
• Authentic material
• Colloquial words
• Speed of speech
• Linking words
• Ungrammatical sentences
• Hesitation
• Long listening
3. Problems result from physical settings
• Noise
• Poor tape quality
• Poor equipment
•What are YOU going to do to solve
these problems?
• We have different interests, thoughts, clothes… and also different
learning styles.
• So if you want to improve your English listening skills, you have to use
the method (way) that works best for you.
• Some people learn really well in a classroom, while others prefer to
practice on their own.
What English Learning Setting Is Best for Me?
• Independent study: “by yourself,” studying English on your own time,
study in different places (on a train, at home, at a park) whenever you
can.
• Classroom setting: with teachers and classmates,
• One-on-one: you and a teacher (or a conversation partner). You might
prefer these lessons if you feel shy around other students or if it’s
easier to ask questions to a teacher or conversation partner privately
(alone).
=> try to see which works best for you
Tips for Improving English Listening with Independent Study
• Study a little bit at a time (microlearning): studying around 15-20
minutes a day instead of a few hours in one sitting.
• Listen to the same English podcast every day for a week.
• Overhear an English conversation: Listen for any new words you may
not know, and also try to see if you can catch what the conversation is
about.
• Take advantage of “white noise.”: We’re practicing passive listening
when we use English white noise.
• Read and listen at the same time: The easiest way to do this is
by watching an English video with English subtitles.
Tips for Improving English Listening with Independent Study
• Experiment with different accents.
• Prepare your conversations before they happen.
• Listen to yourself: talk to yourself in English when having a shower or
going for a run; create imaginary conversations, ask yourself
questions and give yourself answers pretending to be another person.
Sometimes you even change your voice or your accent!
• Use different audio speeds.
• Join a conversation group.
Tips for Improving English in a Classroom Setting
• Record class activities on your cell phone.
• Have a list of words to listen for in class.
• Ask your classmates for help.
Tips for Improving English Listening During One-on-one Classes
• Listen to your teacher for intonation.
• Listen to your teacher for stress.
• Have a conversation with someone who isn’t a native English speaker.

2. How to study Speaking skill?
•What are YOUR problems in English
speaking skill?
2.1.Linguistic problems:
• Lack of vocabulary needed to talk
• Poor in grammar
• Poor in pronunciation
2.2. Psychological problems
• Lack of confidence
• Anxiety
• Shyness
• Fear of making mistakes
• Lack of motivation
•What are YOU going to do to solve
these problems?
1. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes
Your goal is to deliver a message, not speak perfect English, with the right
grammar and vocabulary. Even native English speakers make mistakes!
2. Practice, practice, practice
Practice makes perfect. Constantly look for opportunities to test out your
spoken English.
3. Listen
The more you hear, the easier it will be for you to speak better English.
4. Celebrate success
Every time you talk to someone in English is an achievement. Every single
interaction you have, no matter how small, will help you improve your
skills over time. Be proud of your progress.
5. Think in English
Go from speaking good English to great English by thinking in the
language. You’ll find it difficult at first, but after some time you’ll learn
how to switch between speaking English and your first language.
6. Talk to yourself
It will look funny, but by talking to yourself in English in front of the
mirror for each day, you'll learn to pronounce every letter in the
English alphabet, plus when and how to use different expressions. You’ll
also learn where you make most of the mistakes.
7. Tongue twisters
Tongue twisters help improve your diction teach you how to speak
quickly. Practice with tricky sayings like this: “The thirty-three thieves
thought that they thrilled the throne throughout Thursday".
Tongue twisters practice
• She sells seashells by the seashore
• I saw a kitten eating chicken in the kitchen
• I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch
• How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could
chuck wood?
He would chuck, he would, as much as he could, and chuck as much
wood
As a woodchuck would if a woodchuck could chuck wood
I have never…
• Tell your friends about 5 things you have never done before
• Try to make a long conversation
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION!
