English Bridle
on a horse
By Tiffany Couture
2. What You Need
• A Horse
• An English bridle
• Cross Ties (pair of two)
• A stall or Aisle
• A halter
3. Step One
• Get all of your materials (it would benefit you
if you had some knowledge of bridle parts and
working with horses)
4. Step Two
• Take your horse and put their halter on and tie
them up either in a stall or aisle with both
cross ties.
5. Step Three
• Next take the left crosstie off the halter and
slide the halter on the horse’s neck.
6. Step Four
• Now stand on the left side of the horse and
place the reins around the horse’s neck.
7. Step Five
• Then hold on to the top of the bride (the
headpiece or crown piece) with your right
hand, and place your left hand under the bit
near the horse’s muzzle (mouth).
8. Step Six
• Press your left thumb firmly but gently against
the bar of the horse’s mouth to help them
open their mouth. If your horse doesn’t open
their mouth then try again, a little harder.
9. Step Seven
• Guide the bit gently into the horse’s mouth,
taking care not to hit the horse’s teeth. Draw
the bride up with the right hand, using the left
hand, slid the left and then the right ear under
the headpiece of the bridle.
10. Step Eight
• Next straighten the horse’s mane and forelock
under the bridle. Bridle is usually placed in a
lipped bridle path.
11. Step Nine
• Fasten the throatlatch. Be sure it is lose
enough to allow 4 fingers to be placed
between the throatlatch and cheek.
12. Step Ten
• Fasten the noseband being sure to pass
underneath the cheek pieces of the bridle and
should be lose enough to place 2 fingers under
the noseband.
13. Step Eleven
• Remove the halter and cross ties and bring
your reins over the horse’s neck and proceed
to you riding area.
