3. How does a Portadown Fireplaces wood fire
work
Airwash
– enables a good combustion and
a clean glass
Secondary air (via back panel) –
enables a clean combustion
Primary air (through grate)
To start up the fire and get extra
air
While burning one should leave the air wash and secondary always open
When the fire works perfectly, close the primary air
4. The right fuel
Hard kind of wood
Beech wood
Oak wood
Ash wood
Birch wood
Soft kind of wood (white wood, pine wood) burn faster and have a lower
efficiency rate.
Use split wood (without bark)
Dry wood between 1 – 2 years
Always use ventilated storage
5. The classical method:
From the bottom of the fire box
- Causes a lot of smoke
- Chimney is not being heated good enough
How to start a fire
6. The clean and good method:
Light the fire from the TOP (just like a candle)
After max 20 minutes the fire burns without smoke!
As a result of that no nuisance for the environment; also watch the
following video:

How to start a wood fire
7. As soon as the fire burns good and the first charge is burned up:
Close primary air
Not too much logs per load charge:
2 or 3 logs, 1 layer
Manufacturer always gives advice on the quantity of logs
Secondary air and air wash open. If necessary; do adjust
Burn clean and economical
OR
8. Reload when the last flames are extinguished
A new load ignites the best when the ashes are still red hot,
Never close the secondary air and the air wash when temperature is raising,
After the burning close the air valves only when the ashes have cooled down
sufficiently,
Remove the ashes regularly,
The size of the appliance must suit the room(s) that need(s) to be heated
If you have a valve/ damper in your chimney, always have it open when using
the appliance
Burn clean and economical
10. Efficiency
The efficiency is being influenced by:
The moisture content of the wood (preferably between 16%-20%)
The quality of the chimney
The quantity wood logs (too much/little has a negative effect)
The position of the air valves (wider open has a negative effect)
11. Appliance
Check the sealing
Check the air valves
Chimney
Have the chimney swept
Reduces the risk of a chimney fire
Improves the efficiency
Fuel (wood)
Make sure you have sufficient wood. Wood that one can buy in the
trade (such as gas station) is often too wet.
Prepare for the next season
