When we consider what we need to do to improve basketball skills, when we choose the drills we
feel we need to run that will make us better ball players, we tend to think of shooting drills and
ballhandling drills or if we have a group of players around us, maybe fast break drills.
Occasionally, the more forward-thinking of us consider defense drills, but usually we focus on what
will help us score.
Not often enough do we consider the more fundamental skills that are so important to so many
aspects of the game.
Sure, if you run the right shooting drills, and you do them the right way, you will likely become a
good, perhaps even a great shooter. Every team wants good shooters, but that's only one aspect
of the game, and being able to shoot the lights out all night long won't help you pass or dribble or
defend. And it won't help you get free of the defense to get the ball in the first place.
But, working on fundamental movement and skills like quickness and agility? These skills will
make you a better ballhandler, and a better shooter, and a better passer, and a better defender.
The quicker you become, the better all your other skills become.
And you don't just improve basketball skills like shooting and dribbling; these are important, of
course, if you want to score. But improving your quickness will also improve the skills and abilities
you need to get you in the position to score, which is at least as important as being a good shooter
(if you can't get the ball, you can't score, no matter how good a shooter you are)
You need to get the ball before you can do anything with it, and so you need to be able to do
things like:
cut quickly
set good picks and roll out of them cleanly
execute a solid give and go
All of which will become vastly better as your quickness and agility improve.
In short, don't neglect speed, quickness and agility drills in your basketball training, because the
ability to move quickly and under control is one of the most important abilities you can have on the
basketball court. That's why most teams start the practice season with drills like "foot-fire" and
defensive slide - drills that are designed to improve your lateral movement, agility and speed.
Your individual basketball training needs to include quickness and agility drills as well. They will
definitely improve your ability to get to the ball and to do something with it, and they will improve
