homegardenlot.com/2022/10/how-to-grow-strawberries.html
If you're looking for a delicious and healthy fruit to add to your diet, strawberries are a
great option! But did you know that they're also relatively easy to grow, even if you don't
have a lot of space? In this article, we'll provide you with some tips on how to grow
strawberries successfully in your home, whether you're using containers, pots, or directly
into the ground.
What Type of Strawberries to Grow
2/9
When you're deciding what type of strawberry to grow, you'll want to consider the climate
you live in as well as the amount of space you have. If you live in an area with a mild
climate, you can grow strawberries all year round. However, if you live in a colder climate,
you'll want to choose a variety that is tolerant of cold weather.
If you have limited space, consider growing strawberries in containers. This way, you can
move them around to get the best sunlight and protection from the elements.
Once you've decided on the type of strawberry to grow, it's time to get started! Check out
our tips on how to grow strawberries for a successful crop.
How to Plant Strawberries
3/9
Looking to add some strawberries to your garden? Here's a quick guide on how to plant
them!
Strawberries are a relatively easy fruit to grow and make for a delicious, healthy snack.
They can be grown in most regions with little effort and will provide you with an
abundance of berries over the course of the season.
When planting strawberries, it is important to choose a location that receives full sun and
has well-drained soil. You can either grow them in raised beds or in the ground, but make
sure the area is free of any weeds or other vegetation that might compete for resources.
To plant, simply dig a hole that is large enough to accommodate the roots of the
strawberry plant. Gently loosen the roots and place the plant in the hole, making sure that
the crown (where the leaves meet the stem) is level with the soil surface. Backfill the hole
with soil and water thoroughly.
If you are growing strawberries in an area where they are not native, you will need to
provide some support for the plants as they grow. This can be done by placing straw or
mulch around them, or by using cages or trellises.
With proper care, your strawberries will thrive and produce an abundance of fruit for you
to enjoy!
How to Plant Strawberries in the Ground
4/9
Looking to add some strawberries to your garden? Here's a If you're lucky enough to
have a sunny spot in your yard, you can grow delicious strawberries right at home! Here's
how to get started:
1. Select a location. Your strawberry plants will need at least six hours of sunlight each
day.
2. Prepare the soil. Loosen the topsoil with a spade or tiller to a depth of 12 inches, then
mix in some organic matter such as compost or manure.
3. Plant the strawberries. Place your plants 18 inches apart in rows that are 3 to 4 feet
apart. You can gently loosen the roots before planting, and be sure to plant them at the
same depth they were growing in the container. Well water after planting.
4. Mulch around the plants. This will help keep the soil moist and prevent weeds from
competing with your strawberries for water and nutrients.
5. Fertilize frequently. Apply a balanced fertiliser every few weeks during the growing
season. You can also side-dress with compost or manure in early spring and again in late
summer.
6. Keep an eye out for pests and diseases. Check your plants regularly for signs of pests
or disease, and take action immediately if you see anything.
5/9
Growing Strawberries From Bare Root Runners
One of the easiest and most rewarding ways to grow your own food is by starting with
bare-root runners. These are young strawberry plants that have been grown from seed
and are ready to be transplanted into your garden.
Here are a few tips on how to get started:
Choose a sunny spot in your garden that has well-drained soil.
Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the root ball of the runner.
Gently backfill the hole, making sure not to damage the roots.
Water the plant well and keep the soil moist until it is established.
Enjoy your delicious homegrown strawberries!
Growing Strawberries in Pots
6/9
If you live in an apartment or don't have a lot of space for gardening, you can still enjoy
fresh strawberries by growing them in pots! All you need is a sunny spot and some basic
supplies.
To get started, choose a pot that is at least 12 inches wide and has drainage holes. Fill
the pot with a quality potting mix, and then water it well.
Next, select healthy strawberry plants from your local nursery or garden center. Be sure
to pick varieties that are bred for container growing, such as 'Alpine' or 'Tristar'.
When you're ready to plant, dig a hole in the potting mix that is large enough to
accommodate the roots of your strawberry plant. Take the plant out of its pot carefully and
put it in the hole. Backfill the hole with potting mix, and then water your plant well.
For best results, place your pot in a sunny spot and water it regularly. Use a balanced
fertiliser and apply it every few weeks. And finally, enjoy those delicious strawberries
when they're ripe!
How to Care for Strawberry Plants
7/9
If you're lucky enough to have your own strawberry patch, here are some tips on how to
keep your plants healthy and productive.
First, strawberries are shallow-rooted plants, so they need consistent moisture. Water
them deeply and regularly, especially during dry periods.
Second, add organic matter to the soil each year to help retain moisture and nutrients.
You can do this by spreading compost around the base of the plants.
Third, mulch heavily around the plants to further help with moisture retention and weed
control.
Fourth, remove any runners (side shoots) that appear, as these will take away energy
from the main plant. However, you can root them if you want to create new plants.
Finally, give the plants a boost of nitrogen-rich fertilizer early in the season to encourage
growth. Just be sure not to overdo it, as too much fertilizer can actually harm the plants.
With a little care, your strawberry plants will be thriving in no time!
When to Harvest Strawberries
8/9
The best time to harvest strawberries is in the morning, after the dew has evaporated.
You should also wait until the berries are fully red - this usually takes about three weeks
after the flowers have bloomed. Gently twist the berry to see if it comes off easily; if it
doesn't, it's not quite ready yet.

purchasing them.
2. Choose a sunny spot in your garden. Strawberries need at least 6 hours of sunlight per
day.
3. Amend the soil with organic matter. This will help the strawberries thrive.
4. Water regularly. It is necessary to keep a soil moist, but not soaked.
5. Fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer. This will help the plants produce more fruit.
9/9
6. Mulch around the plants to keep the fruit clean and prevent weeds from growing.
7. Watch for pests and diseases. Be sure to treat any problems as soon as possible to
prevent them from spreading.
8. Harvest often! Strawberries are best when they're fresh off the plant. Enjoy them in
jams, pies, or just eaten out of hand!

little patience and care, you can enjoy fresh, homegrown strawberries for months to
come. Happy gardening! - Garden Lot
