The document outlines steps for managing a large-scale web project, including gathering visual elements as a reference, organizing sketches, choosing a markup base to build upon, separating CSS into basic, adaptation, and theme layers, and creating modular and reusable code to establish a solid markup foundation for future work. The end result is a framework of partials that programmers can use to build out pages and repeated elements, providing code reusability and separate responsibilities for integrators and programmers on the team.

1. The document discusses responsive web design (RWD) and how it can be implemented simply using media queries.
2. It notes that RWD only requires learning one line of code - media queries like @media screen and (min-width:1025px) { /* your CSS here */ }
3. However, it also cautions that RWD requires more than just technical implementation - it involves designing for different screen sizes and a focus on user experience across devices.

The document discusses unconventional approaches to learning web development that involve avoiding commonly used tools and resources. It suggests typing out all code examples by hand rather than copying and pasting, coding entire web pages without checking them in the browser, and writing your own scripts for common tasks like lightboxes instead of using existing code. While these approaches may be slower, the document argues they will improve understanding of syntax, concepts, and problem-solving through debugging mistakes made in manually coding examples and reinventing existing functionality.

This document provides an overview of responsive web design and coding basics for designers. It discusses how print design constraints differ from web, and how responsive design addresses changing screen sizes using fluid grids, media queries, and relative units. It introduces HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, explaining how they work together, and provides examples of common HTML elements and CSS selectors. Key concepts covered include inheritance, specificity, and the cascading nature of CSS.
No code stewardship - No Code Conf 2019 Demo TheaterWebflow
This document discusses principles for responsible no-code development to ensure projects remain usable for clients after handoff. It outlines six principles: 1) Use simplicity by declaring global styles and minimizing unique styles. 2) Make builds self-evident by avoiding complexity and shorthand. 3) Think modularly by creating reusable components and decoupling styles from interactions. 4) Use intuitiveness through pseudo-classes. 5) Prioritize design systems over outlier content. 6) Polish by simplifying and renaming after building complex components. The goal is empowering clients through maintainable no-code projects rather than just quick builds.
The document discusses making your own CSS framework to manage multiple websites with limited resources. It recommends starting with a CSS reset, basic structural elements, and columns for layout. Future-proof the framework to match HTML5. Keep colors, images, and styling out of the framework. Build reusable widgets and allow for design freedom and individuality across sites. The initial version may be too constricting without flexibility. Add optional "flare" like boxes and slideshows once the basics are established. The framework should be easily upgradable and accessible across managed sites.

Is your site ready for the mobile web? Are you sure? Go ahead, check it on your phone, and your kid's phone, and a tablet, and some Android dealies, and a Bleakberry. And a TV or two. I'll wait.
That was an eye-opener, right?
Web design and front end development has never been more complex than it is now, and it's likely to get worse before it gets better. Should you design your site "Mobile First"? How about "Adaptive" or "Responsive"? What's the difference between those again? I want to talk about why you might want to choose these approaches to your project.
CSS is also not really up to the task of managing all this complexity. Sure, it *can* do it, but pure CSS strains almost to the breaking point under the pressure. So let's welcome Sass to the party. Sass is a CSS preprocessor that gives CSS authors the tools we've been aching for in creating and managing large and complex CSS projects. We'll cover a few of the Sass basics, but the real value here is in the more sophisticated tools that let you manage all the moving parts necessary in creating all this new-fangled wizardry.
We'll cover:
- Mobile First
- Adaptive Design
- Responsive Design
- Stand-alone mobile options
- Sass
- Mobile-focused tools
- Compass
- Survival Kit
- Susy
Responsive Design: Out of the Box and Down the Rabbit HoleDan Moriarty
When building a responsive website in Drupal, you may hear about starter themes that are responsive "out of the box". What you learn is that responsive design is such a deep and complex field that "out of the box" doesn't really exist. Let's begin to explore the deep rabbit hole that is responsive web design. From a designer and front end developer perspective.
Many developers used to believe that class-free, lean markup and descendant selectors were the answer. Many developers still build websites for a single resolution, or a small range of devices. However, these practices are now being questioned. Where do we stand? What is best practice web development today? Russ Weakley will explore these topics and more... or possibly less...

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)Julian Hyde
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
