How to budget food for a week on $50?
I am the perfect person to ask about this! $50/week has been my budget for most of the last year. I
am able to stretch this budget dramatically and make it work perfectly!
Let's start with a list of general tips:
- Clip coupons. If you get the paper, there are some in there. Otherwise, go to
http://www.coupons.com and clip away!
- Buy generic. The only time you should buy name brand is when they don't have generic in this
particular item, generic is more expensive than name brand, or it just kind of looks gross. Generic is
usually just about the same quality as name brand foods.
- Cut out fresh vegetables and buy them frozen. This saves a LOT of money.
- Don't eat out.
- Don't buy things like soda or water if you can drink safely from the tap. Buy a reusable water
bottle. You can get one at Target for $2.50 in their "bargain" section.
- Make a grocery list and stick to it!
This week, I spent just under $50 and will be able to feed 2 people for an entire week. I make myself
a budget. Here is what my budget was for this week:
- $10 for household supplies and personal items such as toilet paper and toothpaste
- $10 for canned goods (fruit, beans, etc.), pastas, rices, bread, etc.
- $5 for protein (meat for my husband, tofu for me, etc.)
- $5 for snacks (pretzels, chips, etc.)
- $10 for frozen vegetables, frozen french fries, etc.
- $10 for dairy (cheese, eggs, milk)
Plan out your menu. Make
http://stingyzit4858.blox.pl/2014/11/Financial-Literacy-Programs-in-the-Workplace.html meals in
bulk. I make a huge pot of vegetable soup every week and it lasts for several meals. On the side, I
usually make dinner rolls, grilled cheese, or some sort of rice. I also make a lot of pastas and I
always add broccoli with some olive oil and pepper. For breakfasts, make scrambled eggs with a side
of toast and some of your canned fruit.
I love RecipeZaar too. There are a TON of recipes you can make on a cheap budget. Here is the link
to the site: http://www.recipezaar.com/cookbook.php?b...
Also, stock up on Ramen noodles. You can do just about anything with them. In fact, here's a site
with Ramen recipes! http://www.ramenlicious.com/
Good luck- you CAN do this!
