This document discusses how a Christian should behave. It says that Christians should recognize that they are God's chosen, holy, and beloved people. Their behavior should reflect this by being compassionate, kind, humble, gentle, and patient. Christians should also support and uphold each other, just as Christ supported and forgave them. aware of his or her attitude or the effect it is having on behaviour.

How Should a Christian Behave?

I. Recognize Who You Are (Col 3:12) GOD’S CHOSEN, HOLY & DEARLY LOVED
A. Being a believer in Jesus Christ means to be chosen. What a unique privilege to be chosen
out of the whole world to become a child of God! WE ARE GOD’S DIVINE CHOICE. WE ARE
THE RECIEPIENTS OF GOD’S LOVE.
B. Paul states that, "as the elect of God," we are both "holy and beloved.“
WE MUST BE HOLY BECAUSE GOD WHO CHOOSE US IS HOLY.
WE MUST BEHAVE WELL BECAUSE WE ARE THE BELOVED CHILDREN OF GOD.
1. The proof that our faith is genuine is our desire for holy living. Although we will fail from time to
time (1 John 1:8), we should be steadily progressing toward a more and more godly life.
2. Like wise we are beloved, therefore we should represent His love.

4. II. Act as a Chosen One (Col 3:12)
A. Paul tells us to clothe ourselves with several qualities in order to glorify God.
Because the verb "clothe" indicates a definitive act we must engage in after we are saved.
B. HE LISTS CERTAIN INNER ATTITUDES WHICH ARE TO BE MANIFESTED OUTWARDLY.
1. First mentioned are "bowels of compassion." in Greek refers to the inward parts of the body,
such as the heart, lungs, and liver which are essential to life itself.
2. THE SECOND ATTITUDE PAUL INSTRUCTS US to adopt is that of kindness which may also
be translated as "goodness" or "gentleness" (Rom; 11:22; Gal 5:22; Eph 2:7).
3. Next is humility which means to consider ourselves as being lowly. Without this virtue we may
begin to consider ourselves spiritually higher than others whom we are assisting.
4. Meekness further indicates that we must exercise discernment when approaching any
situation, especially in regard to our own importance and the true needs of others.
5. Finally, long-suffering is mentioned by Paul. We must never give up on anybody because if
God had given up on us, where would we be (Rom 2:4; 9:22; 1 Peter 3:20; 2 Peter 3:15)?

5. III. Uphold Others and Extend Grace to Them (Col 3:13)
A. The word translated "forbearing" is anechómenoi in the Greek and is derived from
aná, "up," and échomai, "to hold." Thus, the philosophy of the Christian is not to "live and
let live," but rather "watch who is floundering in order to uphold him.“
B. The expression "one another" is derived from állos, which means "another of the
same kind" (as opposed to héteros, "another of a different kind"). In effect, Paul is telling
us that we are all going to require support at some period in our lives due to our common
human frailty.
C. Likewise, we are also to forgive each other "even as Christ forgave you."
