HOW IS HALLOWEEN CELEBRATED IN ENGLAND?
2. On October 31, the entire English-speaking world celebrates the eve of All Saints'
Day, better known to us as Halloween. The last weeks of October are full of
preparations for this unusual day: people sew special costumes, buy large pumpkins
and prepare various attributes of the holiday.
3. Halloween in Britain is associated with a variety of thematic entertainment:
masquerades, parties, fortune-telling, watching thematic films on TV, special drinks
and snacks. In fact, the English have a lot of traditions and nuances related to the
celebration of the eve of All Saints' Day.
4. The most memorable and impressive attribute of this day is a pumpkin with a
carved sinister smile and eyes, inside which there is a candle. It is called Jack-
o'-lantern. It is usually made by the whole family on the eve of the holiday and
then placed near the front door and on the windowsill for intimidation
5. In Ireland, a sweet barmback bread is considered a traditional dish, inside which
various objects are hidden to predict the future. For example, a coin means wealth,
a piece of cloth means poverty, and a ring means a quick wedding.
6. Talking about how Halloween is celebrated in England, it is difficult not to dwell
on various masquerade images popular on this day. After all, they create a special
mood and atmosphere of this ancient holiday. The custom of wearing role-
playing costumes designed to make one's appearance unrecognizable appeared in
the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, they have a wide variety of topics:
from vampires and wizards to various fantastic creatures
7. Among the huge selection of images, witches, black cats and bats are popular every
year, as they are closely related to Halloween and have created famous myths
around them
8. The image of a witch with a broom is one of the main symbols of the holiday.
Ancient beliefs say that the power of a witch on the night of November 1
increases many times. An old witch in a pointy hat, stirring a potion in a
cauldron, is a modern transformation of the pagan goddess Mother Earth, who
is a symbol of wisdom and the change of seasons.
9. The witch's companion, the black cat, got a bad reputation and became a symbol
of trouble. During the witch hunt, the animal was considered the embodiment of
a demonic entity, often Satan himself. The bat is also associated with dark
power. A popular myth says that if she flew into a house on Halloween, it means
that ghosts live in it.
