1250 years ago, in the building of Baghdad, they included what became known as The House of Wisdom - a centre which gathered the understanding of all the strands of the Wisdom Tradition spread across the different cultures of the known world.
It was the gathering of it all, and translating of it all into Arabic, that made it available 400 years later in the golden flowering of culture in Andalusia which introduced that understanding into Europe, via translations from Arabic into Latin.
Lines of Wisdom Teaching that flowed out from that period in Andalusia still exist and, within them, there are 'people who know' - who also know each other and reach out and maintain quiet links of wisdom behind and between all the branches of the Wisdom Tradition, but rarely speak in public.
But in recent decades the world has become interlinked as never before and the Wisdom Tradition has recognised that it needs to bring some understanding to the surface that needs to be shared. And part of that understanding is that people - including women themselves - need to understand the wisdom that women carry.
2. • 1250 years ago, in the building of Baghdad, they included
what became known as The House of Wisdom - a centre
which gathered the understanding of all the strands of
the Wisdom Tradition spread across the different cultures
of the known world.
• It was the gathering of it all, and translating of it all into
Arabic, that made it available 400 years later in the
golden flowering of culture in Andalusia which
introduced that understanding into Europe, via
translations from Arabic into Latin.
3. • Lines of Wisdom Teaching that flowed out from that
period in Andalusia still exist and, within them, there are
'people who know' - who also know each other and reach
out and maintain quiet links of wisdom behind and
between all the branches of the Wisdom Tradition, but
rarely speak in public.
• But in recent decades the world has become interlinked as
never before and the Wisdom Tradition has recognised
that it needs to bring some understanding to the surface
that needs to be shared. And part of that understanding
is that people - including women themselves - need to
understand the wisdom that women carry.
4. • This time the use-language is English. Underlying elements of wisdom from
different traditions have been re-expressed and made available by 'those who
know' and one of those involved in this work is Jim Platts.
• Jim happens to be an engineer who has worked globally, and is based in the
Institute for Manufacturing in the University of Cambridge, where for more than a
decade he was one of the Tutors and Lead Examiner for The Cambridge
Manufacturing Leaders' Programme.
• Jim is able to give deeply insightful embodiment to the Wisdom Tradition's teaching
whilst mentoring leaders at global level.
5. • This is not intended to be a stand-alone
retreat, but to be a formative starting
point for a small group who will continue
to work on themselves and study together
at depth, wherever they are in the world.
• Central to the retreat will be the teaching
of the understanding of the Tree of Life, the
metaphysical 'map' shared and used across
all branches of the Wisdom Tradition (for
instance, the Forbidden City in Beijing is a
physical embodiment of the Tree of Life
diagram), and experience of its use in
guided meditation under the leadership of
a deeply experienced practitioner.
• It will be a retreat working at depth and
only those prepared to look at themselves
at this depth, and prepared to commit to
working at this depth should apply.
7. 1. Wisdom tames the human appetite
2. Being smart does not always mean one is wise
3. Techne (skill) without Sophia (wisdom) is always dangerous
4. Wisdom is not innate
5. Wisdom offers the perspective of the universe
8. • 唯有真實的智慧,才能夠斷煩惱或者說轉煩惱,這樣才能夠得自在。
Only true wisdom can help us stop/transform worry/anxiety, and attain ease.
• 自在是每一個眾生,無論他是什麼樣的種性,是什麼樣的根器,沒有一個不追
求自在的。
Ease is a pursuit of all living beings, regardless of species and roots.
• 由此可知,自在與智慧確實超越了種族、超越了宗教,世出世間種種法裡面,
智慧與自在是圓滿的超脫,也是一切眾生共同追求的目標。
Ease and wisdom transcend race and religion. In all the laws in and out of the world, wisdom and
ease are the complete transcendence pursued by all living beings.

9. What is helpful to remember is that disease is dis-ease, i.e.
it is very frequently something psychological (emotions are
part of the psychological level of our 'being') which surfaces
physically. Thus the physical manifestation is a symptom,
not the dis-ease itself. Enabling the Qi to flow removes the
dis-ease and thus removes the physical symptoms of that
dis-ease. The contribution of wisdom (i.e. of the process of
deep reflection) is in being aware of the link and so
working to heal the root dis-ease, instead of merely
treating the symptom.

20. • Path-working is a long established and highly developed
way of making deep inner journeys under guidance and
achieving substantial inner growth.
• The work on Friday and Saturday is preparatory for doing
the path-working on the Sunday morning and is essential to
doing it well, it being the focus of the workshop.

23. Wall of Appreciation
"ESTIEM as an organisation is strongly dependent on the motivation and activity of its members.
It has been the engagement of young people from all around Europe that has made ESTIEM
what it is today and that will lead into a bright future.
Thus, the Board likes to thank people that have contributed to our network in a special way by
introducing them on a wall of appreciation. And the 38th who has the honour of being on it is
_JIM PLATTS_"
24. "First, there are our parents, then a lady at the kindergarten, teachers at school, professors at the
university... What or who should come next? Most of the people finish their education at this point. Most of
the people haven't met Jim Platts though.
Jim Platts - engineer, professor at the University of Cambridge, honorary member of ESTIEM, Academic
Leader of Summer Academy since 2001, founder of EPIEM (European Professors of Industrial
Engineering and Management), mentor, friend, teacher.
During 23 years of ESTIEM we had 23 Boards, more than 100 Boardies and over 200 leaders. There was
however one and the only Jim Platts and he was with us for the last thirteen years. His
first Summer Academy was organised in the UK in 2001. Afterwards Jim Platts mentored every
single summer for two weeks around 150 students, somewhere in the middle of nowhere (according to the
legends) by giving them a unique possibility to discover power of reflection, listening and silence. Still, his
support to ESTIEM went far beyond that. He attended a couple of Council Meetings as a special guest, he
was also the founder of our partner organisation of IEM professors - EPIEM.
We, ESTIEMers, we live ESTIEM, we participate in events, we manage projects and meetings. Jim Platts
believes in ESTIEM. He believes in values that we sometimes tend to forget about. He was reminding us
of them constantly for the last thirteen years. Sadly, this year professor Jim Platts mentored his
last Summer Academy. Although he will not join any ESTIEM event in the future, his influence on us and
our network is still profound and will last as long as we - ESTIEMers - carry his heritage, carry the light.
Dear ESTIEMers, there is nothing more to say than THANK you Jim for your support and to start believing
in ESTIEM by being an example of conscious responsible European who lives the future that Jim tried to
make better for us for such a long time."
