withdrawn by the Board of Regents for cause.
MESSAGE FROM THE HONORARY CHAIR
WELCOME FROM THE HONORARY GLOBAL NETWORK
COMMITTEE CHAIR
As Executive Chair of the Honorary Global Network, it is my pleasure to invite you
to view the HGN information platform. Through our platforms, you will be able to
find the current faculty membership of the Honorary Global Network and a
description of the work it does to enhance the academic life of the
University. The platform was created also to provide information on the
processes for nomination, evaluation and approval of Distinguished University
Professors and of Honorary Degree candidates.
The Honorary Global Committee has a long history, as it was formed in 1985
when Michael University and its Board of Trustees undertook to identify and
appoint the first Distinguished University Professors. A Distinguished University
Professorship is the highest academic honor that Michael University can bestow
on its faculty. There are currently 100 Distinguished University Professors in the
network.
Honorary Global Network has an even longer history of conferring Honorary
Degrees, with the first bestowed in 1990. Our Global Honorees comes from
various academic, political, legal, artistic, industrial medicine, and business
backgrounds that led to their recognition. You will also be able to learn the
principles that govern the selection and nomination processes by which the
University and the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the College
of Law and the College of Medicine and Life Sciences identify candidates for
honorary degrees and the procedures used by the Honorary Global Network to
evaluate and recommend them to the Honorary Chair. As with Distinguished
University Professors, the University’s Board of Trustees approves all honorary
degrees.
We hope the Honorary Global Committee packet is an informative and helpful
resource for the nominated Honorees of Michael University.
Dr. J’Ramando Horton
Honorary Chair

Honorary Degree Nomination Benchmarks
In its deliberations, the Committee on Honorary Degrees has found it useful to
refer to criteria that, while they are neither decisive in the selection process nor
absolute prerequisites provide useful guidelines and points of comparison among
the many suggestions the Committee reviews each year. The benchmarks are as
follows:
 Genuine achievement and distinction in an activity consonant with the
mission of the University: the advancement of learning in the arts, sciences,
and technology and for the public welfare; distinguished contribution in
elective, appointive, or career service notable for demonstrated qualities of
intellect as well as of character; i.e., contribution to the life of the mind,
interpreted broadly.
 Adequate reason for recognition by Honorary Global Network of such
achievement and distinction: an association of the individual with the
University, or a recognizable relationship of his or her achievement to the
mission of the University.
 Particular meaning to the individual being recognized. Achievement and
distinction that have not been similarly recognized by a number of other
institutions.
 Appropriateness of recognition at a ceremony attended by undergraduate
and advanced degree candidates reflecting a diversity of interests and
concerns.
Accomplishments such as the following will be regarded as not in themselves
sufficient reason for consideration: holding public office, acts of philanthropy,
receiving popular acclaim, service to the University or to another educational
institution.
In those cases where academic and scholarly achievement are determining
factors in a nomination, the Committee will consult with the faculty and other
members of the University community having relevant expertise about the
appropriateness of granting the honorary degree.
The Committee on Honorary Global Network and Honorary Degrees consists of
trustee members and members of the Committee on Governance of the Council
of the Michael University Community (CMUC), deliberating as a single committee.
The Committee makes recommendations to the full Board of Trustees who must
approve the candidates.
Honorary degree abbreviations are also based on the Latin name. The Latin
abbreviations are used by many universities. The honorary degree names and
abbreviations are:
Abbreviation Latin English
A.M. artium magister Master of Arts
Art.D. artium doctor Doctor of Arts
D.D. divinitatis doctor Doctor of Divinity
L.H.D. litterarum humanorum doctor Doctor of Humane Letters

TESTIMONIALS
Honorary Degree recipient, Torin Douglas MBE, commented: 'I'm delighted to
receive an Honorary Doctorate through an executive nomination from Michael
University, which is doing exciting things. I look forward to helping ensure that its
media students get the most out of their experience, especially as many of the
most exciting media and digital companies are based in London.'
Honorary Global Network, Honoree Iqbal Wahhab OBE, commented:
'It’s a huge thrill receive this Honorary Doctorate from the Honorary Global
Network and Michael University. I have enjoyed working with the Hospitality
School in creating a new generation of chefs for the Asian restaurant sector
and we have also been able to provide the University’s students with work
placements at my restaurant, Roast. Students need employers and
employers need new talent. It’s a fantastic meeting of needs and I am very
pleased to have been part of a process that links education to employment.'
Honorary Degree recipient, Professor Lesley Page, said: 'I am
delighted and honoured to receive this honorary degree from MU, an
important and successful university. It would have been impossible to
achieve what I have without the support of many, colleagues, friends and
family, and the strong teams I have always worked in, many of them at the
in Europe. As President of the Royal College of Business, I recognise that
this is an honour not only for me but also for the business communities of
which I am apart off.

  • 4. MESSAGE FROM THE HONORARY CHAIR WELCOME FROM THE HONORARY GLOBAL NETWORK COMMITTEE CHAIR As Executive Chair of the Honorary Global Network, it is my pleasure to invite you to view the HGN information platform. Through our platforms, you will be able to find the current faculty membership of the Honorary Global Network and a description of the work it does to enhance the academic life of the University. The platform was created also to provide information on the processes for nomination, evaluation and approval of Distinguished University Professors and of Honorary Degree candidates. The Honorary Global Committee has a long history, as it was formed in 1985 when Michael University and its Board of Trustees undertook to identify and appoint the first Distinguished University Professors. A Distinguished University Professorship is the highest academic honor that Michael University can bestow on its faculty. There are currently 100 Distinguished University Professors in the network. Honorary Global Network has an even longer history of conferring Honorary Degrees, with the first bestowed in 1990. Our Global Honorees comes from various academic, political, legal, artistic, industrial medicine, and business backgrounds that led to their recognition. You will also be able to learn the principles that govern the selection and nomination processes by which the University and the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the College of Law and the College of Medicine and Life Sciences identify candidates for honorary degrees and the procedures used by the Honorary Global Network to evaluate and recommend them to the Honorary Chair. As with Distinguished University Professors, the University’s Board of Trustees approves all honorary degrees. We hope the Honorary Global Committee packet is an informative and helpful resource for the nominated Honorees of Michael University. Dr. J’Ramando Horton Honorary Chair

  • 7. Honorary Degree Nomination Benchmarks In its deliberations, the Committee on Honorary Degrees has found it useful to refer to criteria that, while they are neither decisive in the selection process nor absolute prerequisites provide useful guidelines and points of comparison among the many suggestions the Committee reviews each year. The benchmarks are as follows:  Genuine achievement and distinction in an activity consonant with the mission of the University: the advancement of learning in the arts, sciences, and technology and for the public welfare; distinguished contribution in elective, appointive, or career service notable for demonstrated qualities of intellect as well as of character; i.e., contribution to the life of the mind, interpreted broadly.  Adequate reason for recognition by Honorary Global Network of such achievement and distinction: an association of the individual with the University, or a recognizable relationship of his or her achievement to the mission of the University.  Particular meaning to the individual being recognized. Achievement and distinction that have not been similarly recognized by a number of other institutions.  Appropriateness of recognition at a ceremony attended by undergraduate and advanced degree candidates reflecting a diversity of interests and concerns. Accomplishments such as the following will be regarded as not in themselves sufficient reason for consideration: holding public office, acts of philanthropy, receiving popular acclaim, service to the University or to another educational institution. In those cases where academic and scholarly achievement are determining factors in a nomination, the Committee will consult with the faculty and other members of the University community having relevant expertise about the appropriateness of granting the honorary degree. The Committee on Honorary Global Network and Honorary Degrees consists of trustee members and members of the Committee on Governance of the Council of the Michael University Community (CMUC), deliberating as a single committee. The Committee makes recommendations to the full Board of Trustees who must approve the candidates.
