Homophones, homonyms, and homographs all start with the root word "homo" meaning same. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different spellings, like "petal" and "pedal". Homonyms sound and are spelled the same but have different meanings, such as "bear" meaning the animal and "bear" meaning to carry. Homographs are words that are spelled the same way but sound different, like "wind" as in air and "wind" as in to twist.
