2. Definition
• Different definitions of homelessness are used
in different contexts. Generally, homelessness
is defined as a person who "lacks a
fixed, regular, and adequate night-time
residence."
6. Homelessness facts in U.S.
• Approximately 1.7 million homeless teens in
the U.S.
• 5,000 young people die every year due to
assault, illness, or suicide while on the streets.
• Families in America comprise nearly 40% of all
homeless people.
• More than 15% of Americans live in
poverty, including one in five children, the
highest rate in the industrialized world.
7. Facts continued
• 42% of all homeless children are under the
age of 6
• The recession will force 1.5 million more
people into homelessness over the next two
years, according to estimates by The National
Alliance to End Homelessness.
8. Mental illness correlation to
homelessness
• Schizophrenia is the most common factor of
mental illness and homelessness.
• When a patient leaves treatment and altogether
quits anti-psychotic medications such as
Zyprexa, hallucinations and grandiose ideas ensue
and homelessness follows.
• Homeless schizophrenics usually experience a
worsening of their symptoms once indefinitely
homeless. Poor hygiene, lack of sleep, and the
threat of ongoing violence hastens the descent
into psychosis.
9. Community Service
• This past Sunday we decided to get hands on
• We made over 100 hot dogs
• And brought over 200 bottles of water
• We went to downtown Dallas to a place called
“the bridge” where we were escorted by the
police and handed out the food and water

21. Interview
• We did many interviews while we were downtown that day.
The one that stood out the most was an eccentric man who
called himself “Yaa-Yaa” he deemed it was his arabic
name, he then went on to talk about his exploits in Vietnam
even though he was much too young to have ever served in
the Vietnam War, and claimed he was still getting $2,000+
from the government and got full retirement, yet you have
to serve for 20 years to get benefits and he served for
three, so he said. Afterwards a Police officer confirmed he
was a scam artist and most likely a textbook example of
someone with Schizophrenia as a homeless person, along
with the fact he was extremely paranoid about the camera
being on him, also reiterates this assumption.
