WHIP UP A STORM
Do you live to eat or eat to
live? For many Singaporeans,
food is the highlight of their
life and cooking is more than
just a chore, it is a passion.
I have had the pleasure
of visiting many homes, that
are designed with beautiful
ėĆőÚĂäĢʼnÁĢàHÁěūÁűʼnƈĢàĆő
inspiring to see how much
these homeowners are willing
to invest in their love for
cooking. As starved for space
as we might be living on this
island, interior designers are
coming up with innovative
ideas to max out every inch
of room in the cook zone.
And even with the growing
popularity of open kitchen
concepts, there are plenty of
new products and appliances
that can help to keep your
home free of grease and smoke
when you are indulging in
your favourite pastime.
I may not be an avid cook,
ÙŖőHʼnőĆěěƈĢàőĂäėĆőÚĂäĢ
a central hub of my home,
because that’s where my family
and friends tend to end up
hanging out in when they come
over. In the modern context,
the kitchen has become more
than just a utilitarian zone. It is
a casual area, where everyone
can converge in and not be
cloistered by the formalities of a
proper sitting room. It’s a space
where I can invite my loved ones
to eat, drink and make merry.
For that reason, I placed
emphasis on looking for quality
materials and appliances that
can be easily maintained while
still looking gorgeous when I
was designing my kitchen. After
all, I don’t want to be the one
slaving away behind the stove
while everyone else is having
fun, or worrying about the
massive clean-up that needs to
be done after everyone has left.
In this edition, my team
and I serve up plenty of ideas
on how you can create your
dream kitchen, and ways to
keep it looking neat and chic.
Enjoy your read, and we will see
you in our next exciting issue.

LIVING LARGE IN A
SMALL KITCHEN
Common issues faced when designing a
kitchen and expert tips on how to optimise
the space efficiently.
8
12. An open-concept kitchen
typically comes without
separating walls, or the walls
are hacked down, leading to
lesser wall space to build the
regular top and bottom kitchen
cabinets. Opening up the walls
provides larger countertop
spaces and creates more floor
space to build kitchen islands
or a peninsula that comes with
built-in storage spaces as well.
A closed-concept kitchen is
enclosed with walls and a door.
Closed kitchens are typically
seen in kitchen layouts, such
as the basic straight kitchen
layout with one wall of storage
or a galley kitchen with two
parallel walls of cabinetry and
T
he kitchen is often
considered the heart of the
home because that’s where
family meals are prepared. Yet
it can also be a prime spot for
casual meals and interaction
for those who do not cook on a
regular basis.
With more homeowners
opting for an open kitchen
in a tight apartment layout,
it’s important to know how to
maintain the look of a neat and
well-stocked kitchen. When
planning the layout, it is essential
to ensure that you have factored

your appliances and food, as well
as ample work surfaces for your
cooking prep.
A well-designed kitchen is
one where everything you need
is within reach when you are
cooking, helping to cut down on
the time needed to put your meals

areas for storing perishable items,
as well as kitchen equipment that
you regularly use, like the rice

that you seldom require, like a
dough mixer or pasta machine.
“The kitchen area

a walkway in the middle. It
is one of the more efficient
layouts for storage and narrow
spaces, as full-height cabinets
can be easily built onto one
of the walls. Closed kitchens
are ideal for homeowners who
cook regularly, and want to
prevent grease and fumes from
entering other parts of the
home. The L- and U-shaped
kitchen layouts are variations
of this layout and offer great
amounts of storage space as
well, however, corner cabinets
have to be fitted with pull-
out trays or other add-on
accessories to make full use of
the otherwise “dead space” as
they are inaccessible for users.

COMMON KITCHEN ISSUES
9
13. A carpentry kitchen, also known
as a carpenter-made kitchen is
custom-made and tailored to
fit any kitchen floor plan and
technical requirements in terms
of plumbing, gas pipes, and
even structural obstructions like
columns and beams. Everything
from the laminates to the cabinet
handles are sourced from various
suppliers before installation.
Additional hinges, racks, and
systems, such as drawer tracks,
pull-out trays, and interior
dividers have to be incorporated
separately to further optimise
the storage needs.
LACK OF COUNTERTOP SPACES
Consider the countertop prime property in your
kitchen, and filling it with bulky kitchen appliances,
such as rice cookers and air fryers, means having
less space for cooking preparation. Always
make space for a large cutting board beside the
sink before putting other appliances along the
countertop. Alternatively, you can also extend the
countertop space by having a wooden cutting
block over the sink.
CLUTTERED CUPBOARDS
A kitchen with sufficient storage
space can also be faced with
situations, where things get
messy and items are stacked
up against each other, causing
hard-to-reach areas in the inner
recesses of kitchen cabinets.
Drawers that are fitted with
organisers make it easier to
find what you need at a glance,
while deeper drawers fitted with
heavy-duty drawer tracks can
be used for cookware such as
pots and pans that come in
various sizes.
INEFFECTIVE STORAGE
SPACES
Poorly planned storage
compartments can lead to a lot
of wasted space. When planning
the layout of your kitchen
cabinets, start by sorting out
the appliances that are regularly
used from those that are seldom
utilised. Small items, such as
cutlery and cups, should be
stored in a drawer close to the
dining area, while items that are
seldom used can be stored along
the top cabinets. Appliances that
see regular usage can be stowed
under the counter or kept in a
cupboard for easy access. Open
shelves are ideal for display
areas to make the kitchen feel
spacious and inviting.

they come in modular units
designed with various storage
requirements, it is easier to
assemble and reassemble the
modules based on the different
kitchen workflow requirements,
allowing for a fuss-free process
to replace or upgrade any
cabinet without having to make
any major renovations.

ON A KITCHEN
RENOVATION,
HERE ARE SOME
IMPORTANT
CONSIDERATIONS
THAT INTERIOR
SPECIALISTS WANT
HOMEOWNERS TO
THINK ABOUT:
objects are kept away from
open surfaces when not
in use. Replace chemical
detergents and cleaners with
non-toxic versions and keep
them out of reach from infants
and toddlers. For seniors,
building more drawers that
are at waist-level will help
to ease the kneeling and
stretching movements when
reaching for items.
Any hobbies and
occasional items to
account for?
Today, we see more
homeowners playing the role
of a weekend baker, barista,
or even pastry chef. Some are
even running a food business
from home, where a range of
additional specific equipment
and tools need to be properly
stowed away. Families that
host dinner parties regularly
may also need separate
storage solutions to hold
entertainment items, such as
extra serving utensils, trays,
and even disposable wares.
Make a checklist of the things
you have to see where they
should go when the kitchen
reno is completed.
Your cooking habits
First-time homeowners
need to identify the
kinds of cooking that will
be done, as well as the
frequency and amount
of food that’s ususally
prepared. These affect
how and where the storage
areas should be to facilitate
the cooking process.
Who will be using the
kitchen?
Members of the family
should have easy access to
the kitchen, but ensuring
their safety in the functional
zone is also important.
Consider appliances that
come with child-safe locks
and ensure that sharp

Wow your guests at the next

futuristic, and stunning tubular
island hood. The tubular design
looks fantastic from any angle,
allowing you more flexibility
with its positioning in an open
kitchen. Designed to be placed
near the dining area, this hood
also features a low noise level
at 50 dB (akin to the sound of
a normal rainfall) so it won’t
interrupt your conversations.

TUCKED UNDER
Appropriately fitted on the
underside of your top cabinets,
a slimline or semi-integrated
hood provides the full functions
of a kitchen hood while adding a
subtle presence in black glass or
stainless steel designs. Accessing
the control buttons is fuss-free,
as they are located right on the
front panel. You can also go for
a telescopic hood option that
extend the extraction surface,
simply by sliding the drawer out.
UNDER THE
CABINETS
For tight kitchen
spaces, having
sufficient cabinet
storage is key,
and that is where
a built-in slim
hood comes in.
Slimline hoods and
integrated hoods
have a much smaller
footprint, which can
be nicely installed
under the cabinets.
OUT OF SIGHT
A minimalist would love the
idea of having a fully integrated
kitchen hood, where the kitchen
hood is completely concealed
in your upper cabinets and
achieves a clean kitchen look. It
looks just like your top cabinet,
but an integrated inserted
kitchen hood often comes with a
retractable panel for the button
controls, or have the controls
seamlessly integrated with the
hood panel.

Extraction
A rule of thumb when

in exhaustion mode for your

multiply the volume of your
kitchen (in sqm) by 10. An
example would be a regular-
sized kitchen of four by three
metres with a standard height
of 2.6m, multiplied by 10,
would come up to 312 m³. This
means that your cooker hood
will require an extraction rate
of 312 m³/h or more to ensure

When selecting your
kitchen hood, remember to
take into account the kitchen
layout, the design of your
kitchen, as well as the size of
the kitchen hob. A kitchen
hood should extend 10cm over
the countertop from the edge of
the kitchen hob.
With the various kitchen
hood models and designs
that are readily available,
homeowners will be able to
decide where they want the
kitchen hood to be installed -
on the wall or ceiling, under
the cabinets, or even on the
countertop.

Maximise your kitchen’s potential with these easy hacks.

INSTALL A COOKER HOOD
INSTEAD OF AN EXTRACTOR
FAN FOR BETTER AIR QUALITY
Consider installing a cooker hood
instead of an extractor fan for better
air quality when space is at a premium.
These days, cooker hoods can do double
duty with superior extractor functions
and are easier to install rather than
extractor fans which require hacking.
BOSCH’s Series 8 wall-mounted
cooker hood (DWK98PR60B) is an
excellent example, with a remarkable
extraction power of 964m3/h and a
grease filtration of over 85 per cent.
Its PerfectAir sensor also offers
automatic extractor control for high
performance with low noise. When
you’ve finished cooking, the fan
continues to run until the kitchen air
is fresh and clear.

CUT DOWN ON FOOD WASTE BY
KEEPING THEM IN VACUUM CONTAINERS
AND ZIPPER BAGS
We’ve all been there, you only need half a lemon
for a recipe, and you’re not sure what to do with
őĂäĩőĂäŅĂÁěù͡ĩŅűĩŖƈĢàűĩŖΎŪäàäùŅĩʼnőäàőĩĩ
much chicken when someone tells you they’re
not coming back for dinner. Sure, you can keep
them in a plastic container, but chances are
these may go bad before you get around to using
them. To cut down on wastage, why not store
them in vacuum containers or zipper bags?
The lack of oxygen will help preserve them for
longer, not to mention more hygienically.
Not only can BOSCH’s Hand blender
ErgoMixx (MS6CB61V5) be used for
processing smoothies and soups, the useful
appliance has a fresh vacuum system to
keep food (and leftovers) fresh for longer.
All that’s required is to attach the vacuum
pump to the hand blender with a simple
click, allowing you to preserve fresh food,
leftovers or snacks in vacuum containers
and zipper bags.
USE YOUR MICROWAVE
EFFICIENTLY BY REHEATING
FOOD PROPERLY
Enjoy your leftovers and cut down
on reheating disasters by learning
how to reheat food properly. For
example, when reheating pizza or
baked goods, place a cup of water
in the microwave next to them,
adding moisture to the air and
äĢʼnŖŅĆĢúőĂäűÚĩġäĩŖőƉŖƅű͠ʼn
for pasta, before you hit the power
button, shape it into a doughnut
shape. Having a hole in the middle
will stop it from burning around
the perimeter while staying ice cold
in the middle. If you’re reheating
bread, drape the rolls or buns with a
moist paper towel before setting the
microwave to a low-power setting.

34. GET A SELF-CLEANING OVEN AND
USE IT CORRECTLY
ĢĩŪäĢőĂÁőÚěäÁĢʼnĆőʼnäěùʼnĩŖĢàʼněĆėäÁÙěäʼnʼnĆĢúőĂÁő
shouldn’t be questioned, but it’s essential to understand how
it works and saves time and energy.
Self-cleaning ovens use high heat to break down
and burn up food remnants and built-up grease, so avoid
potential foul odours and smoke by removing any visible
pieces of food or liquids before turning on the heat.
Extra-heavy insulation helps the oven reach high
temperatures during a self-cleaning cycle, reducing the
äĢäŅúűŖʼnäààŖŅĆĢúŅäúŖěÁŅÚĩĩėĆĢú͠ààĆőĆĩĢÁěäĢäŅúű
savings can be realised by running the self-cleaning
function right after cooking so that heat already built up and
retained is also used as part of the cleaning process.
The BOSCH Series 8 built-in oven (HBG6764S6B)
has a Pyrolytic self-cleaning, which automatically cleans
the oven without the need for chemicals. Once the oven
has cooled down, simply wipe out the bit of ash, and
you’re done.
STORE YOUR EVERYDAY
INGREDIENTS CORRECTLY
IN YOUR FRIDGE
If your ketchup smells funky or the
dates are mouldy, you are likely storing
them wrongly. Especially in our hot
and humid climate, some everyday
ingredients must be put away in the
fridge or freezer to keep well.
Condiments that contain very
high levels of acidity, sugar, or salt
ÁŅäƈĢäőĩʼnőĩŅäĆĢőĂäłÁĢőŅű͡ÙŖőūäő
condiments, like mustard, mayonnaise,
ketchup, and maple syrup, should be
kept in the refrigerator.
Nuts and seeds may look hardy, but
when introduced to oxygen, heat, and
light, they can quickly begin to spoil.
An excellent place to ensure
the longevity of your groceries
is BOSCH’s Series 6 with French
doors and a bottom freezer
(KFN96APEAG). This appliance
has a VitaFresh XXL 0°C
feature, which keeps food fresh
for longer in extra-large climate-
controlled fridge drawers. It also
has a Metal Backwall with Multi
Airflow, which prevents uneven
cooling in your fridge.
To avoid this, transfer them into an
airtight container and place them
in the fridge as soon as possible.
Extend the same treatment to dates
and other dried fruits.
MAINTAIN YOUR WOODEN KITCHEN ACCESSORIES
Wooden spoons and cutting board add a touch of rustic charm and
aesthetic quality to any kitchen, as well as an excellent background
for taking those pictures for social media. But remember to keep
your wooden kitchen accessories looking and performing well and
bacteria-free by spending some time maintaining them.
For wooden spoons, don’t ever stick them into a dishwasher.
Instead, boil them in a pot of water regularly, then leave them lying
in the sun to dry. When it comes to cutting boards, scrub the wooden
surface with coarse salt and massage with half a lemon. Once a
month, condition it by scrubbing it with food-grade mineral oil.

35. LEARN HOW TO MODIFY RECIPES
FOR INDUCTION HOBS
While induction won’t make your food
cook faster, it does heat cookware
placed on its “cooking zones” evenly
ÁĢàÁěġĩʼnőĆĢʼnőÁĢőěű͠ʼnʼnŖÚĂ͡őĂäŅäΎʼn
little to no downtime between actual

spices while the cooktop is doing its
ūĩŅė͠HĢʼnĂĩŅő͡łěÁĢÁĢàƈĢĆʼnĂűĩŖŅ
prep before you even turn on your hob.
BOSCH’s Series 4 induction hob

is suitable for HDB flats. Its Power

heating and helps you get quick

BUY MULTI-FUNCTIONAL
APPLIANCES TO MINIMISE
STORAGE
When space is at a premium, invest in
appliances, which can be used in many
ways. Bonus points if they look great,
so you can even display them on your
kitchen counter.
BOSCH’s Kitchen machine
(MUM59340GB) ticks off all these
boxes. A powerful kitchen machine
with an award-winning design, the
MUM5 is a real all-rounder and easy
to use. Its extremely powerful 1.000-
watt motor makes it suitable even
for very heavy doughs. Furthermore,
it ensures perfect baking results
with its professional patisserie set
of a high-quality whisk, stirrer and
kneading hook. The machine is also
highly versatile due to a wide range
of accessories, including an ice-
cream maker, grain mill, multi mixer,
cookie attachment, meat grinder,
mixer and more.
ORGANISE YOUR STORAGE SO EVERYTHING IS WITHIN REACH
We’ve all been culprits of buying more spices and sauces, baking
ingredients and condiments, using them once and forgetting all about
them. Whether in the fridge or cupboard, it’s often a case of out-of-
sight, out of mind.
Stop this wasteful and uneconomical habit by organising your
items on a turntable. You can also place a regular turntable in the
fridge to provide easier access to your bottles of sauces or jams. Pull-
out bins are also heaven-sent so that you can stack your items all the
way to the back yet have them within easy reach. Clear organiser bins
with handles are handy for freeing up the produce drawer, while their
handles make it super easy to take them in and out.
CLEAN CROCKERY AND POTS MORE
HYGIENICALLY WITH A DISHWASHER
Dishwashers use much hotter water to wash
dishes, killing most of the bacteria that could
grow on your dirty dishes. While dishwashers
are not free of bacteria, which are found near the
rubber sealing around the dishwasher parts, this
bacterium is not the least bit harmful to humans.
Washing dishes by hand has far more bacteria
because it lives on the rag, sponge or towel you
use repeatedly.
BOSCH’s Series 8 free-standing
dishwasher (SMS8YCI01E) with its Hygiene
Plus Option ensures the highest standard of
hygienic cleaning. For families with young
children or allergy sufferers, where an
antibacterial clean is particularly important,
this feature increases and sustains the rinsing
temperature to 70°C for 10 minutes to remove
remaining bacteria.

50. KEY DESIGNS
1. REDESIGNING
MONKEY KING
Conceptualised together
with Edmund Zhang,
the Monkey King is a
collaborative project to
re-envision and capture
the timeless stories and
values of a traditional
deity in a modern day
context and usage,
while retaining the
genuine appreciation
for its possessions
and features.
With the Monkey
King project, Hao Jie
and Edmund imagine
a future where art
aficionados can
obtain traditional
deity sculptures on
art and design retail
channels, and where an
international audience
could enjoy the folk
stories of different
deities in their own
ways. Through the
abstraction of form, the

social sector, encouraging
conversations about designing
for seniors, by providing an
integral understanding of
seniors’ mindsets, attitudes,
behaviours, and the “key phases
of seniorhood
in Singapore.”
Looking into the future
of his work, Hao Jie is looking
beyond the boundaries
of design for inspiration.
“Inspiration may come from
everyday life, much like MOHA’s
SAFSG project began with
a simple comparison to the
army,” says Hao Jie. “This was
where we asked ourselves,
“What if there was a senior
army where seniors could
enlist to continue contributing
to society in their unique way?”
Armed with this unbounded
curiosity and the ability to ask
the right questions to achieve
design solutions, he continues
to seek out projects similar to
SAFSG where design can be
used to serve unobserved needs
through industrial and product
design and beyond.

FORCE SG
FRAMEWORK
“I am currently working
with MOHA on Senior
Active Force SG, as
we continue to look at
how we can continue
to test and pilot it on
the ground,” Hao Jie
says about his ongoing
venture, demonstrating
the importance of cross
disciplinary teams and
design impact on the
social sector.
Senior Active Force
SG (SAFSG) reimagines
a future where seniors
are part of an ‘army’ that
empowers them to stay
active and contribute
meaningfully to society.
The project uncovers the
attitudes, mindsets, and
behaviours of seniors as
they go through senior-
hood and is supported
by the Good Design
Research Initiative
by DesignSingapore
Council.
3. JUROR OF
EVERYDAY DESIGNS
As part of the
Superposition exhibition
at the National
Design Centre, Hao
Jie proposes that
design is “neither
valuable nor useless
until it is observed
and measured.” In
this tongue-in-cheek
installation, he invites
viewers to act as design
jurors to stamp their
approvals on ordinary
designs; the trophy and
stamps that he designed
are modelled and
designed after the few
famous design awards in
the market.
