Valentine's Day originated to commemorate the death of Saint Valentine in 270 AD. Saint Valentine was the first to send a valentine card to his lover while he was in jail. February 14th was chosen as the date to celebrate love and the start of spring. Cupid, the child-like son of Venus the goddess of love, became associated with Valentine's Day. Today, Valentine's Day is celebrated worldwide as a day of love, friendship, and giving gifts like cards and chocolate to loved ones.
