HOLDING AN EFFECTIVE
TEENS CLASS
By
Elder Prof. Eric Appau Asante
Objectives of the Lesson
By the end of this lesson, you would :
1. understand what it means to hold an effective teens
class.
2. know the preparations required in holding an effective
teens class.
3. be able to explain what is required of a facilitator
during a teens class.
4. be able to manage the expectations of a teens
facilitator after a teens class.
Introduction
Are teens
influencing the
world around them
or is the world
influencing them?
What's your opinion?
Today, teenagers need solid biblical knowledge
to help them navigate a flawed world
with clarity and truth–Ground them!
Holding an Effective Teen Class
The use of academic teaching
techniques does not negate
God's power to operate through
us.
We must preach as
EFFECTIVELY and PLAINLY as
possible, having in mind that the
teens are digital natives.
Before
The Teens Class
THINGS TO CONSIDER
Before holding a teens class the
following must be carefully considered:
1. Location
2. Readiness of Teacher
3.
Location
What do you think
you should consider
when choosing a
location for your
teen class..?
CONSIDRATIONS FOR CHOOSING A LOCATION
1. Privacy or Serenity
• If you are hosting a class with
teenagers, then you should make
sure the room where your class is
located has some level privacy or
serenity - where the Teens can focus
on the lessons that you are teaching.
2. Distractions
Where there are distractions in the
class, the teens teacher must be
prepared to quickly deal with the
source to prevent the teens from
losing focus.
CONSIDRATIONS FOR CHOOSING A LOCATION
2. Examples of Distractions
a. Background Noise from
Moving vehicles
Interruptions from other PA systems
Hawkers
Noise from other teens in the class
Mobile phones etc.
What other sources of noise can you think of?
CONSIDRATIONS FOR CHOOSING A LOCATION
2. Examples of Distractions
b. Poor Hygiene
The space must be clean and spacious
Scent must be favorable
Ventilated
CONSIDRATIONS FOR CHOOSING A LOCATION
2. Examples of Distractions
c. Weather
Be mindful of the weather
conditions of the location
CONSIDRATIONS FOR CHOOSING A LOCATION
Readiness of Teacher
Readiness of Teacher
Prepare before teaching the teens
A teens teacher who is ready for
class will have an excellent class.
If we prepare adequately, we engage
the teens better; if we prepare less,
we teach worse.
What kind of
preparations must we
do before meetings
and teaching our
teens?
Readiness Factors
1. Prepare your message
You can prepare your
messages from the
church's teens syllabus or
your own materials, but
beware of your sources.
Readiness Factors
2. Prepare your teaching materials
(visuals and materials you will use to teach the lesson)
Humans can remember visuals for a long
time. Visuals help teens learn and
understand.
Readiness Factors
3. Pray
A teacher’s prayer before the
teens class is one way to
humbly ask God for guidance
and wisdom as you teach and
teens learn from you.
During The
Teens Class
1. The Teens Teacher
During The Teens Class
Who was your faviourate Sunday
School teacher? 😁🤣
Please mention his/her
popular name.
2. Class Control and Discipline
Simple approaches can make
teens class discipline
manageable.
A well-prepared teens teacher
without effective class control
and discipline can't impact
lives.
During The Teens Class
Five Class Control and Discipline Factors
1. Establish the Rules
of Your Teens Class
Set and communicate
teens class rules
quickly.
Keep regulations
simple.
• Don't bully others
• Be punctual and proactive
• Ask before leaving
• Don't name-call
• No teasing
• Bring your Bible’s, notebooks and
pens to class
EXAMPLE RULES!!!
Five Class Control and Discipline Factors
2. Reward Good Behaviour
Recognize and reward teens who behave well.
This will set a good example for others to follow.
Rewards do not have to be expensive.
Five Class Control and Discipline Factors
2. Reward for good behavior can
be:
• Praise for good behavior
• Being the teacher’s helper for
the day.
• Inexpensive items like stickers
on their notebooks, pens,
pencils, erasers, toffees and
chocolate.
Five Class Control and Discipline Factors
3. Discipline Measures
Discipline Measures need to
be introduced during teens
class. The measures do not
have to be overly harsh or
increasingly punitive.
They must be reformative in
nature. See examples on
next slide
Five Class Control and Discipline Factors
1. Letting them stand in a corner
2. Reporting them to their parents
3. Assign him/her as the reader for the day
Five Class Control and Discipline Factors
4. Classroom Arrangement
Teens who often talk must be placed apart to encourage
them to stay focused on the lesson.
Young people are often compared to sponges - they
absorb and imitate the behavior of others around them.
Five Class Control and Discipline Factors
5. Consistently pray for your
teens
Pray for your teens during
lessons. Sometimes the
distractions in class are the
enemy's attempt to stop the
teens from learning about God.
3. Teens World
Gradually warm them into the Teens dispensation
• Note that they just exited Children’s ministry
• Continue to engage them with action Songs
• Use Colourful resources
4. Think About viariety
Variety in terms of
1. Programmes
2. Resource persons
3. Instructional Resources
5. Know their academic calendar of their Schools
To get to know your teens better, be interested in their
schools official academic calendar. This will help you
to:
• Plan to fit
• Pray for and with them during exams
• Organise camp meetings, retreats etc during their
vacations
6. Be interested in their welfare
• Know those who are orphans
• Teens of single parents
• House helps
• Apprentices
7. Keep a register of the teens class
• Use advance technology
where possible
• Celebrate their birthdays
and other successes with
them
8. Know them
• Know their names and call them by their
names
• Names of their parents
• Where they stay
9. Observe ethics in handling teens
• Understand and respect the teen’s
diverse cultural background.
• Protect the teen from all forms of
abuse while he or she is in your care.
• Avoid engaging them at obscure
locations or areas
After The
Class
Get closer to your Teens
Taking time to socialize with them will help you
better understand them and the issues they face
on the daily. This will position you to prepare
lessons that will help guide them and address the
challenges they face.
Get closer to your Teens
However, in getting closer to your teens you must
take some precaution so not to give room to
wrongful interpretation.
• Never be alone behind closed doors with a teen.
Evaluating the effectiveness of teen
classes.
• Formative –
weekly/monthly
• Summative -
mid-year/end of
year
Conclusion
We may be considered gifted laborers, yet we may lack
what is most important, “The Spirit of God”.
We require the Holy Spirit while we work with these
methods in handling teens.
Only He can provide us with spiritual insight and make
us aware of the needs of those we teach. God Richly
Bless you.
Thank You
