Agile and Lean tell us to value people over all else, but does that mean all people? It's no secret that technology has a gender diversity problem, even as Agile and Lean become increasingly popular. But it's actually worse than that. Since the introduction of Agile, the percentage of women in tech has declined significantly. Something must be done.
During this session, we will use role playing and common Agile scenarios (standup, etc) to practice identifying and gently correcting exclusionary behaviors. The scenarios and techniques are inspired by the Ada Initiative's Ally Skills workshop and have been adapted to model an Agile team context.
Case study
The document discusses problems encountered during the dismantling of roller table foundations at a steel plant's Hot Strip Mill during a capital repair project. It identifies 64 problems, analyzes and prioritizes them. The problem selected for focus is the dismantling of the roller table foundations, which had to be completed within 5 days. However, breakdowns of the only two pneumatic breakers available caused delays. An analysis identified the root causes of breaker breakdowns as lack of training, no dedicated technician, unavailable spare parts due to the breakers' age. Addressing these causes was necessary to complete the foundation dismantling on time.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
