An accomplished museum executive, Joel A. Bartsch started his career as a curatorial assistant and assistant to the director at the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum. In 2004, Joel Bartsch became the president and CEO of the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS). Modern and interactive displays abound at the Houston Museum of Natural Science Sugar Land Campus, featuring everything from a touch-screen periodic table and molecule maker to magnetic pendulums and moving magnets. Young families with children are the primary target audience for these resources. Thus, they are designed with these classes on visitors in mind. One of the primary goals of the HMNS' Sugar Land Campus is to show youngsters how science is all around them. Bright lights on touch screens and displays with backlit buttons were muted to provide a more "sensory-neutral" setting for youngsters who could be overstimulated. Because people with an autism spectrum disorder or other associated conditions are more sensitive to intense lights and loud noises, displays with movies playing at a loud volume are frequently muted or reduced for several hours during the opening to protect oversensitive visitors.
