SPONSORED SUPPLEMENT: MACQUARIE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT
M
acquarie Graduate
School of Management
(MGSM) aims to
develop students’
knowledge of an
increasingly globalised world, as it
seeks to maintain its reputation as
one of the world’s leading business
schools.
Professor Robert Widing, the
school’s dean, says MGSM’s mission
is to “develop leaders with a global
mindset who create sustainable
value and are good citizens”.
His comment captures the
school’s four pillars: leadership, a
global mindset, the creation of
sustainable value and global
citizenship.
This mantra has a strong
influence on the school’s decision-
making and agenda, as it looks to
distinguish itself from other
business schools and remain
contemporary as a teaching
institute.
“These four pillars drive
decisions about curriculum change
and improvement, co-curricular
events and guest-speaker selection,
resource allocation and the school’s
learning outcomes and assessment
programme,” Widing says.
Looking ahead to the
development of the school, Widing
believes preparing students for an
increasingly globalised world is
essential for management
programmes. He acknowledges that
having a global network of
businesses is more important than
ever for people to feel comfortable in
managing and doing business in
cultures unlike their own.
A subject piloted in Hong Kong,
with its first delivery in Sydney, will
be scheduled later this year under
the title “Managing with a Global
Mindset”.
The school is also developing a
programme for Hong Kong students
to study and work with counterparts
in Sydney, and integrating these
programmes highlights the global
mindset pillar and also supports the
school’s other pillars.
Through this programme,
MGSM will serve as a platform to
build business relationships through
improved cross-cultural
communication and understanding.
Widing explains: “We must
maintain the very highest teaching
standards. We are fortunate to have
outstanding faculty members who
are not only widely respected
scholars who produce quality
research but who care deeply about
working with, learning from and
educating the management
communities we serve.”
MGSM is among the top 40
business schools in the world for
open programmes (Financial Times
2009 and 2008).
The school is also ranked fifth
globally in accountancy and eighth
in finance for MBA schools
(Financial Times Global MBA
Rankings 2010).
To make sure the school stays
among the top schools, it continues
to maintain cutting-edge MBA and
executive programmes, and attracts
and educates first-rate students who
make a positive impact for their
employers and communities.
MGSM is one of the oldest and
top-ranking business schools in
Australia. Its partnership with the
Hong Kong Management
Association ensures its commitment
to high-quality teaching.
The strength of the school is seen
through the success rates of its alumni.
Graduation surveys found that
students’ earnings potential and
employability increased as a result of
studying at MGSM. Many students are
already experienced managers.
To maximise students’ career
potential, MGSM provides a range of
services such as organising internships
during programmes, career coaching
and advice about developing résumés
and interview techniques. It also
broadens networking opportunities.
“Our school has a global reputation
for excellence, and I am sure this is a
major factor in our students’ career
enhancement,” Widing says.
Taking on the world
Laurence Bailey, of JP Morgan, is one of many guest speakers lecturing Macquarie Graduate School of Management students on the value of a global mindset.
Students can develop a global mindset at one of the world’s leading business schools
Professor Robert Widing
In a booming business market, the
Macquarie Graduate School of
Management (MGSM) recognises
that managers require a global
outlook. The school offers executives
a chance to top up their skills and
excel in a part-time programme
while working full-time.
“Many of MGSM’s students have
a view to working in China and they
have multinational clients,” says
Professor Richard Petty, associate
dean (international). “The demands
of multinational clients and the
demands of a regional role require
that managers possess a broad
range of skill sets that address
financial understanding, strategic
insights and all forms of
communication skills.”
MGSM and the Hong Kong
Management Association have been
working together in Hong Kong
since1994 and the school trains
students into becoming better
strategic thinkers and enhances
their problem-solving skills.
MGSM’s programmes offer students
the chance to be trained in risk
management and in financial
management that will help them to
face challenges such as the recent
financial crisis.
“MGSM’s MBA programme is in
high demand,” Petty says. “Past
students and alumni tell us that this
is a reflection on MGSM’s position
as one of the top business schools
globally and a leader within Asia.
Managers with an eye on career
advancement are setting their sights
on advanced degrees to make
themselves more competitive.”
One of the programmes students
can choose is the international study
tour. “It takes students into an
entirely different culture, context
and business setting, and challenges
them to bridge the divide between
businesses operating in one part of
the world versus another,” Petty
says. “The module brings a new
perspective to students interested in
the globalisation of business and the
behaviour of multinational
companies.”
MGSM’s postgraduate
programmes allow students already
in a profession to choose the point at
which they want to begin the study
that suits their needs. Students can
enter at different levels or suspend
their studies if life and work issues
demand it. Students can then return
to the programme without penalties.
The school offers a general
management MBA and a master of
management which features a
choice of specialised areas of study,
including financial management,
people and performance
management, international
management, and marketing
management. MGSM also offers a
master of management degree in
general management.
The MBA can be completed in
two to three years of part-time study,
depending on timetable availability.
Most students are advised to
complete it within three years.
The size of the programmes in
Hong Kong offers stability and depth
in the timetable, so the same subject
can be taken at several different
times within a year and there’s a
range of subject options.
This gives flexibility to move
along at a pace that suits the
student. Each course unit involves
40 hours of face-to-face teaching in
intensive seminars held on two
weekends and two weekday
evenings. MGSM is finding an
increasing number of students
opting to do the full MBA because it
opens more doors professionally.
The MBA also provides
opportunities to switch careers, as
many MBA candidates move out of
traditional line-based roles in large
firms and into a senior management
role either during their studies or
shortly afterwards.
Ideal chance
to top up skills
Professor Richard Petty
