HORROR

2. INTRODUCTION TO HORROR
FILMS
▸The first film to be proclaimed as the first horror film was
brought out in the 1890s by George Melies the best known
being Le Manoir du Diable, which is sometimes credited as
being the first horror film.
▸Horror films are now being more developed as the times change
and are now being adapted as the audiences tastes changes.
For example audiences now a days would find horror films
made in the early 1900’s boring as the scare factor and
realisation of the film has increased due to CGI and special
effects.

3. HORROR FILMS IN THE
1800’S
▸The first Sub genre of Horror films was Gothic horror. The
first horror film made was within the Gothic Horror genre.
One of the first ever Horror film writers, was named Mary
Shelley, she was a Gothic Horror Writer. The first Gothic
Horror film to arise was the 1986 film Manor of the Devil” by
George Melies. This was the era where Horror films were
first established and shown to a wider audience, the sub
genre of Gothic Horror started Horror films.

4. HORROR IN THE 1900 -1950’S
▸During the 1920’s - post World War 1, German expressionism changed films, Germany has a
company called the UFA( Universum film Atikan Gesellschaft. The first german expressionism
film that made an impact on the film industry was the cabinet of DR caligari. The film had a
very low budget. This mean they used man made resources such as paintings to create
shadows within the background. They were shown through different camera angles to show
create a realisation and atmosphere. Because of the board and the upgrade within the
german film industry they created a film called Nosferatu in the 1920’s in which is still
remembered today as one of the best films ever made in that time.
▸ In the 1930’s the sub genre of american horror began to grow, as the conglomerates such as
Universal, Columbia and united Artists grew Horror started to expand and use sound within
horror. This updated horror, This brought out movies such as Dracula, in 1931, Frankenstein
in 1931 and also Mummy in 1931. These films were what brought sound in to the horror
industry.
▸Within the 1940s Horror films were then moved together to create franchises and films and
characters were put together therefore targeting already there audiences from the original
movies. These movies for example were “house of frankenstein”. in which there were then
many more that brought brands together.

5. HORROR IN THE 1950’S-2000
▸In the 1960s the sub genre of horror films of phycology, sex and gore increased as it became
a trend in what the target market demanded. The first film under this sub genre and demand
was made by the famous director Alfred Hitchcox, he created Physco in 1960. This was the
first film under this genre, following from this there was a different type of this sub genre
called “Hammar horror” this was sex and gore but in colour, the first film to present this was
the curse of frankenstein in 1957. And then “The little shop go horrors” directed by Roger
Corman which included blood and women in which was popular within the film industry at that
time.
▸In the 1970s the sub genre of Paranormal horror was then introduced and become popular.
In 1973, the exercist was made, this film was the beginning of the rise of paranormal horror.
Following this there was Steven speilburgs film Jaws.
▸At the end of the 70s the film industry introduced Alien and Sci-fi horror, the films first
established by this were the Poltergeist in 1982 and the shining. Both in which were born
within the sub genre of sci-fi and enhanced the audience attraction to sci-fi.
▸Also during the 70s/80s independent horror and slasher films took a rise within the horror film
industry they created Texas chainsaw massacre in which was made in 1974. The rise in
independent horror meant films such as Halloween in 1978, this film was inspired by alfred
hitchcoxs film physco. It was produced on a budget of $300,000 and grossed $47 million at
the box office in the United States.

6. HORROR IN THE 1990S -2016
▸In the 1996 a film called Scream came out, this film had reference to modern
films and started the enhancement in to modern films. This film was post
modernised and related to modern audiences. From this 1996 film we were
then taken in to the next sub genre of horror films called Torture porn. The
films represented by this sub genre was SAW in 2004 and Hostel in 2005.
▸During modern times they then started to use Found footage, this is an sub
genre in itself, films such as Paranormal activity are all based on found
footage in which excited the audience more as there is a sense or reality.
▸Recently, we have been going in to the Zombie sub genre, with films such as
World War Z and shaun of the dead. This is the most modern sub genre. and
hasn't really been dome to a global distribution before as has only just
become popular.
