Content analysis is a method of qualitative research that has risen in popularity since the 1950s, when it began as a post-WW2 technique to analyze propaganda and mass media. This method works by translating components of text, or other forms of content, into data variables that can be placed on ordinal, nominal and interval scales for statistical analysis. But its origins actually stem all the back to Greek antiquity and the development of the field of hermeneutics that studied early scripture. Our analysis here will take a look both at the history leading up to the start of popularity in computer-based text analysis.
