Historic preservation and environmental stewardship are not necessarily mutually exclusive goals according to Matthew Quirey, a conservation associate. The Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation assists parks with documenting cultural landscape history and conditions to understand significance and manage change over time. There are four types of cultural landscapes - historic sites, designed landscapes, vernacular landscapes, and ethnographic landscapes. The Secretary of the Interior's Standards provide guidance on preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, and reconstruction approaches to treat historic properties. Proper maintenance techniques can minimize change to historic landscape features and characteristics.
