A Hindu refugee in Lahore writes a letter to his love Zahira in Lucknow to say goodbye. He describes being badly beaten, with cuts and a concussion, and a broken back. After 11 years of failed attempts to return to India, he has decided to kill himself by hanging. He has prepared a bedsheet rope and stool and will take his life shortly after finishing the letter. He thinks of their last happy moments together nine days ago and his plan to propose marriage that day, but froze when he saw her joyful face.

He asks the author to read the journals of his deceased friend Riya, who used to enjoy the author's books. Madhav explains he cannot read the journals himself due to the painful memories. Though reluctant, the author agrees to eat with Madhav. However, Madhav does not touch his food and leaves the journals with the author, saying he cannot throw them away. The author is left puzzled with the journals and unsure of Madhav's intentions in leaving them.

CNF Reflection:
Since I started this course, I realize how it will be challenging for me, first of all, I am an international freshman English major, so English is my second language. I thought, in the beginning, it will be easy, and I can do it as the native speakers, but unfortunately my scores don’t show that. I got difficulty with writing that much of papers and found it challenging. I said I will do my best and will work hard I might succeed and pass. I tried and squeezed my brain in hope to do better and better.
I started my CNF draft by telling a story of my young brother Yousef, who has rare condition illness. Just 300 statues in the whole world, I explained more about how our life as a family has changed before Yousef been a member of the family and after. Yousef adorable, kind and quiet child, who spends most of his life in hospitals. I hope to find the right medical treatment to this issue. I explained more about how our life was affected, how I had to leave everything behind me, as my country Saudi Arabia, my friends, my memories, and latterly everything. You can imagine how hard it could be.
Some of the comments that I had in my first CNF drafts were about where are you in the story? Why we can’t see you between the lines? I thought, in the beginning, I just want to tell the story that has a high meaning to me I could not deliver what I was feeling exactly. People can’t feel the way that you feel except if they went at the same situation that you went through. So they will understand why you wrote this and this. I was thinking about starting my CNF by saying “ there was a family included two brothers and two sisters” Which I am one of the sisters who is writing the story. But readers could not get what I was trying to do, the feedback was always asking for my feelings, and my voice not for someone telling a story about someone else.
To be honest, it was tough to rewrite it again and again, but I had to, so I can include my voice in the story to be able to deliver my character to the reader. I took their feedback seriously. So I made my final draft shorter than the second draft. I feel satisfied with my final draft. I could give a clear idea of the kind of transformation that my family and I had before and after Yousef’s illness. Also, I could put my voice as well so the reader will understand what was my feeling at those moments.
I decided to change the topic of the story from The Child Yousef into a Life Transformation. I thought it would be better at this way. Not being specific will give the reader that question in the heads before reading the story which is what kind of life transformation it could be? So this is the reason for seeing the topic is different in the first and second draft that in the final draft.
I included a lot of dialogues in my CNF I think they give life to your story and realism. I know it is hard to remember everything precisely happened in the past, but it is not hard to remember the general i ...

The author started writing seriously at age 16 to express personal views and feelings. As a child, he enjoyed reading Mark Twain and Jack London, and now favors Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Romualdas Granauskas. He writes spontaneously when inspired rather than to a schedule. - 1. Hindu Refugee Camp, Lahore Chapter - 1 8th November, 1958, Lahore, Pakistan Respected Zahira Ji, I have decided to kill myself. I’m not saying this in the heat of the moment or a fit of sadness. I have thought about this for several days before making up my mind. And I have no doubt, Zahira ji, that by the end of this letter, you will also agree with me that I should not live any longer. I’m writing to say Khuda Hafiz.
- 2. It's taken me great effort to even get my hands on this paper and pen. When I got this paper, I initially thought I would lie to you. I thought I should not tell you that as I write this, I’m bleeding from at least seven places and my back is broken, both figuratively and literally. I thought I would tell you that I have reached Lahore unhurt and that there is nothing to worry about and I’m only devastated emotionally, to be away from you. But I could not bring myself to lie. As I write to you, the cut near my mouth has been bleeding all day and the concussion on my forehead is throbbing so hard that it feels as if it might be audible to you, all the way to Lucknow. My legs are aching badly and I do not know if the pain in my stomach will ever stop. 2/5
- 3. Don’t get me wrong, Zahira Ji. I’m not a quitter. The punches and slaps might have broken me physically but that is not the reason why I want to die. Allah knows that if there was even a little hope that I would get to see your face once before I close my eyes, I would have crawled from Lahore to Lucknow with just my hands. But the truth is that all the doors of coming back to India for me are now closed. I have tried everything and spoken to everybody I could. It’s been eleven long years since the partition of India and I’m still on this side of the border. It is time that I accept my fate. It is time I realise that I’m meant to die on this side of the border by hanging myself. 3/5
- 4. Just before sitting down to write, I tore a bedsheet to use it as a rope. I have found a slot in the ceiling and tied the bedsheet- turned-rope to it. I have found a small stool that I can kick to leave my body gasping for oxygen. Everything is set and within a few minutes of finishing this letter, I would have breathed my last. It’s only fitting that writing to you and thinking of you is how I spend my last few minutes. 4/5
- 5. I’m thinking of those last few moments I spent with you. To think about it that it was only nine days ago but feels like it was another lifetime. Even before you came to my house for your weekly visit, I had made my mind that it was time I tell you that I love you and want to marry you. But when you reached, I looked at you and froze.
