This garden room extension for a house in Kirknewton, Scotland replaced a dilapidated potting shed. The clients wanted a year-round room that allowed for interaction with their southwestern-facing garden. To address this, the architect designed a masonry wall on the south side to shelter the room from a nearby road and prevent overheating, with a glazed slot separating it from the original stone house, while a lighter timber-and-glass construction on the other sides connects visually and physically to the garden and forms a sheltered terrace.
