Citizen journalists played an important role in documenting violence during post-election conflict in Kenya in 2008. An analysis compared reports from mainstream media, citizen blogs, and Ushahidi crowdsourcing platform. It found that citizen blogs tended to report violence earlier than mainstream media and covered different areas. Ushahidi reports increased after its launch and covered more locations than other sources. The study aimed to empirically assess the role of new media during crises.
