Helen Keller was born in 1880 in Alabama with full sight and hearing, but contracted an illness at 19 months that left her blind, deaf and mute. She was later educated by Anne Sullivan, who helped develop Helen's intelligence and taught her methods of communication including touch-lip reading, Braille, speech, typing and finger-spelling. Helen went on to graduate from college and wrote her first book, The Story of My Life, detailing her early life and experiences with Anne Sullivan. Helen Keller died in 1968 at the age of 87, more than 30 years after Anne Sullivan's death.
