Myocardial infarction, also known as a heart attack, is caused by the formation of plaque in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Over time, plaque can rupture, causing a blood clot to form that blocks one of these arteries. This cuts off blood flow to part of the heart muscle, causing a heart attack. Risk factors for heart attack include increasing age, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, and lack of exercise. Preventing atherosclerosis, controlling risk factors like hypertension and hyperlipidemia, quitting smoking, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet can help prevent myocardial infarction.
