This Hawaiian creation myth describes the journey of the volcano goddess Pele who followed a star from the northeast and proclaimed a new island, Hawaii. After evicting the fire god Ailaau from the mountain Kilauea, Pele had a dream about the chief Lohi'au and sent her sister Hi'iaka to fetch him. However, a misunderstanding arose when Pele believed Hi'iaka and Lohi'au had fallen in love and wouldn't return, causing an eruption. Hi'iaka and Lohi'au were eventually able to reconcile with Pele and return to Kauai.

2. The Beginning…

• Proclaimed the island as Hawai’i
• Traveled to the top of the mountain where a part of the earth
collapsed with Pa'oa
• Named the place Kilauea
• Large pit named Halema'uma'u.

3. Destruction and Birth
• Ailaau, a fire God, resided on Kilauea
• Evicted by Pele
• Egg given to Pele hatched into Ha’iaka (bosom of Pele)

4. The Journey
• Pele has a lovely dream about Lohi’au
• Lohi’au was the chief of the Kaua’I island
• Hi’iaka sent to fetch the chief
• If Hi’iaka didn’t return, Hopoe would be hurt
• Lohi’au found dead

5. Misunderstanding
• Pele believed that the pair fell in love and weren’t going to
come back
• Pele made an eruption
• Hi’iaka became sadden and furious
• Pele grew angry
• Lohi’au was resurrected…. Again.
• Hi’iaka and Lohi’au went to Kaua’I
• Loahi created from Pele’s fury
