Editor's Notes

  1. In Japanese business culture seniority is determined by age, not by skills and experience. Because of this cultural norm, be sure to greet the senior most member first and then work your way down the hierarchy. Privacy is valued and personal matters are kept separate in the Japanese business world. Considering this trend, it is best to avoid asking personal questions at the beginning of business relationships. Another notable difference in business culture is that Japanese business culture is more group based compared to in the United States, where it is individually based. Think along the lines of collaboration and teamwork, rather than individual recognition. This value impacts behaviors of individualism and self-appreciation. Always give public credit and do not single anyone out (for good or bad). This is why it is frowned upon to self-appreciate in Japanese business culture.
  2. Always call at least one hour prior to the meeting to either confirm the meeting or to inform of lateness. This is so others have an opportunity to reschedule if needed. The Japanese have been trained in business to take a lot of notes. In the United States, meetings are mostly held with the purpose of telling others what one thinks they need to know. But in the Japanese business culture, meetings are held with the purpose of learning what others know. To the Japanese, going out for drinks or going to play golf is used as an opportunity to evaluate your character. Never decline an invitation to socialize as it is critical to socialize after work hours in order to better build relationships and trust.
  3. Treat with care and respect. It is a good idea to have English on one side and Japanese on the other side. Always present with Japanese side up and forward. The quality of the card correlates to how much business you want to conduct. When accepting a business card; accept the car with both hands, examine it closely, then place in your card holder. Make sure to hold the card with both hands and avoid covering the person's name on the card with your fingers. Attention is even given to the order that cards are placed on the table. Put the highest ranking person's card on your case so that it is higher up.
  4. Gift giving is a very important ritual for the first business meeting in Japanese business culture. When receiving a gift, make sure to use both hands and do not open the gift until after the meeting unless you are encouraged to do so. On the contrary, do not be offended if you give someone a gift and the person does not open it in front of you. When picking out a gift, there are a few things to know; avoid potted plants, funeral flowers, and sets of 4 or 9. Funeral flowers include: lilies and blossoms. It is best to avoid all types of white flowers. In addition, the color red is thoughtful to avoid as that is the color that funeral notices are usually printed on.
  5. The Bowflex Xtreme 2 SE Home Gym is an all inclusive at home gym for experienced and inexperienced fitness fanatics looking to meet and exceed their goals all in the comfort of their own home without the aid of a personal trainer or workout buddy.
  6. The Power Rod® Resistance Standard is designed to maximize your results. It achieves the feel of real weights by utilizing leverage but what makes this feature so special is that it dramatically reduces the risk of injury that can result from using dumbbells and barbells. Additionally, if a customer feels the standard 210lbs. does not quite meet their fitness level, it can be upgraded to either 310lbs. or 410lbs.
  7. While progressing through the workout, the customer will no longer need to pause and switch cables in order to change which exercise they are performing. Thanks to Bowflex’s No Change Cable-Pulley System you can now seamlessly progress through your daily workout without decreasing your heart rate or fumbling around with bulky workout equipment.
  8. Due to Bowflex’s compact design, the all inclusive home gym stands at 4’10”x4’1”x6’11”. This is slightly taller than your average modern day refrigerator. Perfectly fits in any room of the house all while maximizing the amount of exercises you can perform.
  9. When purchasing a product such as Bowflex, having the comfort of mind of an included warranty makes the decision even easier. This great product comes standard with a 7 year warranty which will protect you from any manufacturer defects. Additionally, the Power Rod® comes standard with a lifetime warranty. If that wasn’t enough to convince you, there’s also a Six Week Physical Fitness Guarantee which allows you to return your Bowflex for a full refund if you are not happy with your results.
  10. Due to Bowflex Xtreme 2 SE Home Gym’s wide variety of equipment integrated into its design, there are many exercises you can perform at home with out the aid of a spotter.
  11. Physical fitness is the key to a healthy lifestyle. The Bowflex will provide an easily accessible, non invasive at-home gym where customers can feel at ease as they embark (or continue) on their journey to a healthier self in the safety of their own home. Because there is no need for a spotter, you can work out at any time without having to rely on someone else to be there with you. Allowing you to work out on your own time, when it fits YOUR schedule. It eliminates the monthly gym membership fee, simply buy your Bowflex and enjoy its use for years to come. Additionally, you can forget personal trainers… The Bowflex comes with a fitness guide complete with instructions on how to perform each exercise.
  12. Silence is a big part of communication, often used during meetings to release tension of group. Be careful when using the ok sign because, in the Japanese culture it is a symbol for money. Also, do not worry if someone closes their eyes when you are talking, they are doing so to listen closely and intently. Show appreciation through and apologize for any mistakes. It is better to apologize then to make an excuses, owning up to your own mistakes is very valuable. However, do not use the word sorry as in Japanese it means that you feel sorry about the situation or circumstances. Do not be confrontational. Always try to ask questions that can be answered with a yes. The word no is avoided in Japanese culture as it is believed it leads to confrontation. However, there are some gestures that are used to mean no these include, staying silent, change of conversation, tilt of head, suck air between teeth, suggest an unrelated alternative and indicate that something might be difficult.
  13. The Japanese people have a very different style of negotiation than we do in America. Japanese people must never lose their face during negotiation, meaning do not talk bad about the group or organization. Politeness is directly correlated with this, it is important to be polite at all times. Unlike in America, where you may meet many people through negotiations and other business activities, the first person you contact will always be present. The Japanese prefer to negotiate in teams and each individual will have special skills to help the group or team be successful. Finally, in order to
  14. If we are going to successfully sell the Bowflex Xtreme 2 we first need to know the history of Japanese health concerns and trends. In the 1980s and 90s the Japanese began to be concerned about the populations health. These concerns brought about aerobics. This was the first tool used to promote fitness in Japan. However in the 90’s fitness centers began to take off. These were especially popular in larger cities. Fitness centers in Japan are just like gyms in America with a wide variety of work out equipment's from weight lifting to running or stretching.
  15. Tokyo is the most populous metropolitan area in the world with 37.8 million living in the greater Tokyo area. This means that there are a lot of potential buyers in a concentrated area. Also, this means that space is limited. The average home size is just over 1000 square feet. Therefore, the Bowflex home gym is perfect because it is small enough to fit into small houses and provides 70 exercises.
  16. Next we would like to discuss our action plan. For this we will be covering selling points, advertising strategy, as well as a sales strategy for Japan.
  17. For our marketing plan we want To focus on three key topics. The ease of use, The convience, as well as the compact size of the Bowflex Our product has over 70 different cable excercises, all of which are safe and convenient with the machine assistance. The bowflex is also incredibly convenient, people these days are always on the go, the Bowflex allows them to workout on their schedule. And lastly, we want to sell how compact the product is which allows it to conveniently fit in small apartments.
  18. For advertising we believe that we should focus on the audience between the ages of 20 and 30. Due to this we recommend targeting advertising during sporting events. Focusing on the pop culture craze of Japan by advertising with musicians. And lastly using prime time tv to reach our audience.
  19. Advertisements should focus on creating a “Hip” image for our product. Sponsoring celebrities will make our product more desirable. We want to focus on athletes due to our workout product but other sponsors will draw in customers.
  20. The majority of our sales will come through our Online retailer which is conveniently also a form of advertising. We also want to focus on large local distributors in Japan in order to spread our product. In store demonstrations of the bowflex is perfect to bring in customers and showcase our product
