The CPU is the central processing unit of a computer. It contains the arithmetic logic unit which performs arithmetic and logic operations. The CPU also includes a control unit which retrieves instructions from memory and directs the operation of the entire system. It coordinates all activities between various parts of the computer system such as the memory and input/output devices.
