2. Material Handling
• Number of operations that can be executed either by hand or mechanical means or
devices to convey material and to reduce the human efforts.
• To lighten the work of human labor
• After harvest, grains are conveyed from one place to another place
• Common types of mechanical devices for grain handling are;
Belt conveyor
Bucket elevator
Screw conveyor
Pneumatic conveyor
3. Material Handling device selection
• Characteristics of products
• Stability of conveyor in normal working and climatic condition
• Capacity of conveying and speed rating
• Deadload of the conveyor
• Consideration of use of gravity
• Spillage of conveyed products should be avoided
4. Material Handling
• Belt conveyor
• A endless belt operating between two pulleys with its load supported on idlers.
• Belt may be flat for transporting bagged material or V-shaped for moving bulk
grains.
• Belt conveyor consist of a belt, drive mechanism and end pulleys, idlers and loading
and discharge devices.
• Antifriction bearing, high mechanical efficiency
• Design (determine speed and width of belt)
5. Material Handling
• Removal of fines due to velocity of belt
• Max speed for transportation of grains is 3.5 m/sec
• Recommended speed for grain conveying is 2.5 – 2.8 m/s
8. Material Handling
Bucket elevator
• Buckets attached to a chain or belt that revolve around two pulleys one at top and
other at bottom.
• Vertical lift of elevator may range between few meters to more than 50 m.
• Types (spaced bucket elevator and continuous bucket elevator
