Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF) uses pulsed magnetic fields to stimulate bone healing through increased turnover. It has been used clinically to reduce healing time for long bone fractures. PEMF is thought to stimulate bone remodeling in a similar way to mechanical stress by inducing electrical potentials in bone cells. A non-invasive dental application of PEMF using a mouthguard could stimulate bone turnover during orthodontic treatment, pending further experiments to determine optimal treatment parameters.
