This document provides directions for students to evaluate a hand-tinted photography assignment in a written critique. Students are instructed to write a multi-paragraph response that 1) describes the subject matter and details of their piece, 2) analyzes how elements and principles of art are used, 3) interprets the purpose or meaning, 4) judges whether the work succeeds and provides their score, and 5) explains tools used to complete the assignment. The critique must be typed, include the student's name, date, and period, and saved in the specified folder for grading.

Directions: Evaluate your BEST HAND TINITED using the following guidelines. This MUST
be typed and at least one page, a paragraph for each step! Make sure your name, period and
date are on your typed piece.
1. Description: Describe the subject matter of your piece. Be specific; describe every detail
of your project. What do you see, hear, feel (touch), smell and/or taste. Give only the
facts (the artwork’s title, the artist’s name, etc…)
2. Analysis: Discuss how and why your piece is “art”. Write about how you used the
appropriate elements (line, shape, form, space, color, value & texture) & principles
(proportions, balance, emphasis, pattern, unity, & variety).
3. Interpretation: This is the purpose or meaning of the piece. Answer, what is
happening? & what is the artist (you) trying to say? You will interpret (explain or tell the
meaning of) the work. Be creative but stick to your observations & specific evidence that
is inside or outside the photograph.
4a. Judgment: You judge whether or not the work succeeds or fails. This is your time to
give your opinions. You must make up your own mind & need to know why you feel the way
you do. Consider your use of art and composition, do you feel like your work is a success?

5. Tools: Explain the tools that you used in Photoshop an briefly describe what they do,
how you might use them in the future, and what you learned by using them.
When finished, save it in your personal folder, and then turn it into the In-Box under your
period’s folder, in the #3 folder under Hand Tint Critique.
