Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
Although the United States never declared an official war on North Vietnam, the United State
participated heavily in the war because of the Gulf of Tonkin's Resolution. In the Gulf of Tonkin, the
United States's ship, Maddox, was being attacked by the North Vietnamese. In response to this,
Congress and the House of Representatives passed the Gulf of Tonkin's Resolution. It allowed the
President to combat communism in any way he felt would be appropriate for the situation. (2) In the
Vietnam War's case, it was to help South Vietnam by sending in many American soldiers and
helping them financially. Some might argue that the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution could be considered
an unofficial and informal declaration of war because of the ... Show more content on

Gulf Of Tonkin Research Paper
Many people believe that the Gulf of Tonkin Incident is responsible for increased U.S. escalation in
Vietnam. President Johnson and his administration claimed that the incident involved unprovoked
attacks on U.S. destroyers (Herring, 165). People had questioned what had actually occurred even
back then. I believe the Johnson administration was looking for a reason to escalate American
involvement and that the Gulf of Tonkin Incident provided the perfect opportunity. American policy
in South Vietnam was not as effective as many had thought. I do not believe the Gulf of Tonkin
Incident itself incited U.S. escalation but rather the erroneous information about what had actually
occurred. Following the first attack on U.S. ships by North Vietnamese patrol boats, the Whitehouse
claimed that a second attack had occurred, ordered airstrikes in retaliation, and then used the
incident to justify the president's use of U.S. military forces in Vietnam (Duiker, 165). This would
seem reasonable on the surface because not many people were aware of what had actually occurred
during the incident. I believe it was a way to gain support for U.S. escalation in the area by claiming
that the North Vietnamese were the aggressors. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
ships in question were on "routine patrol" in the area" (Duiker, 166). It seems to me that the Johnson
administration didn't seem to really question what had occurred. Furthermore, McNamara and his
advisers "seem to have selected form the conflicting evidence those parts that confirmed what they
wanted to believe" (Herring, 149). In a way, I believe that picking and choosing information
regarding the incident helped lead to U.S.

Swot Analysis Of Doughnut Time ( 2016 )
Doughnut Time (2016) is a Brisbane based company, specialising in a variety of premium desserts
that capitalise on the use of social media, unique locations and offerings (refer to table 1). Despite
desserts being considered non–essential, high levels of competition and healthy eating trends (refer
to table 1), the business has successfully established itself within the fast food and dessert industry,
which is set to grow in the next five years (Tonkin, 2016). The company has a distinctive vintage
flair, yet modern take on doughnut names and designs, becoming popular on social media
(Doughnut Time, 2016). It's vintage vans and small 'hole in the wall' stores make the company sort

Despite these statistics only 31% of SME businesses actively operate a social media engagement
strategy, this is an opportunity for the already tech–savvy company (Ravensdale, 2015). Doughnut
Time 's social media team regularly posts photos of its gourmet treats on Instagram, where it has
more than 80,000 followers, as well as on Facebook, where the Doughnut Time page has received
more than 55,000 (Schlesinger, 2016). When analysing these main factors, Doughnut Time appears
to be posed for product development, taking advantage of opportunities through the use of menu
innovation and promotion deals (Newstex, 2014).
II. MARKETING GOAL
To increase the sales volume of Doughnut Time by 15% in 6 months
III. MARKETING STRATEGY
Doughnut Time's domestic target audience is consumers between the ages of 15–24 who live in
urban locations where Doughnut Time is accessible (Stone, 2016). This segment is comprised of
high school students, university students and new practitioners (Tonkin, 2016). According to Tonkin
(2016), consumers in this demographic are a key market for the fast food industry and provide
stability and revenue growth. This target audience is suitable for Doughnut Time as these consumers
are less health–conscious than older counterparts and are strongly affected by technology and
economics (Tonkin, 2016).

Congress' approval of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was incorrect. The United States was going by
constitutional obligation to meet Communist aggression against any of the parties within the
Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty. President Johnson, whom requested the resolution, felt
that it was a demonstration of Americas' unity. Also, when asked about what happened in the Tonkin
Gulf, former Defense Secretary replied, "Absolutely nothing". In the future Congress should look
back on this and understand that approving something just for popular opinion is not the way to go
about governing.

Vietnam War Influence
405,399 Americans died in the Second World War against the powers of the Axis in both Europe and
in Asia. These men gave their lives to protect America from the fascist and militarist governments of
the Third Reich and the Japanese Empire. This war would shape America forever, setting into
motion future events. The Second World War brought about the end of colonialism around the
world, bringing new countries into fruition.Countries like Israel and India had been born as a result
of this end to Colonialism. In this pantheon of newly independent states were the countries of the
French colony of Indochina, where inside the dense jungle lies the country of Vietnam. This area

Kennedy be elected as the POTUS. This new president would not start war in Vietnam, but would
see tensions rise in the area and reactionary measures. For instance, not even eight days after his
inauguration, JFK had approved a counterinsurgency plan for the army of South Vietnam. This gave
them funds to increase their army by 20,000 men, and authorized agents to operate in the North
Vietnamese territory ("The Cold"). Kennedy feared for the safety of the region, and so in 1961, he
sent General Maxwell Taylor and Walt Rostow to South Vietnam. Upon the two men's return to the
United States, they reported to the president that it was possible for the South Vietnamese to defeat
the Northern aggressors if the United States provided strong political backing as well as strong
military and economic backing. They also recommended that the President send 8,000 soldiers into
the region to help fight. JFK did not send in the troops, but he sent up to 15,000 military advisors
("The Cold"). Throughout Kennedy's term in office, the war had been escalating very slowly, and by
March 1962, the U.S. had established a Military Assistance Command in Saigon, the South
Vietnamese capital ("The Cold"). By the time of Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963,
the U.S. had 70 dead, 12,000 military advisors in the region, and was costing the taxpayers $400
million dollars a year ("The Cold"). While the country had been in a state of mourning , a new

The Vietnam War: The Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution
The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was on August 7, 1964 and it gave Congress permission to expand
the Vietnam War. In the spring of 1964, military personal developed a mission to attack North
Vietnam, but Lyndon B. Johnson worried that the people would not support the growing war. Later
that same year, powerful forces had gotten control over almost half of South Vietnam. As of that
time Johnson was being criticized by the Senator Barry Goldwater, for not handling the war more
aggressively. On August 2, there was a raid on the North Vietnamese coast by South Vietnamese
warships, and the destroyer Maddox was attacked by North Vietnamese boats. Just a few days later
Maddox was reportedly under attack again. After that last attack on the Maddox, Johnson ... Show

It was a white, radical, New Left organization. The group started off mainly as a white male group
against communist, but it became a critical point for the student movement. The Students for a
Democratic Society disapproval of the Vietnam War made it a symbol to the New Left. The New
Left referred to the generation of Americans in the 1960s who were of age and opposed of the
Vietnam War and wanted to make change within the civil rights movement. The New Left was
largely made of college students and the Students for a Democratic Society was the first group to be
established for those principles. Two years after the SDS was formed, fifty–nine members met in
Michigan for a political platform that said universities should be the focus point of "participatory
democracy." That goal set in Michigan made the SDS want to help with transferring power from
representatives to individuals. The SDS's ideas got the attention of many college students, with most
of them being influenced by the efforts of trying direct democracy. In 1963, the SDS established the
Economic Research and Action Project to start practicing participatory democracy. The SDS then
turned to be antiwar and in April of 1965 it held the first of several protests against the Vietnam War.
Then in 1968, the students protested on the campus of Columbia University due to their
participation in war related help. The protest was soon ended by New York police who injured over
200 students and arrested about 700. By the late 1960s SDS divided into a Marxist–Leninist group
and an organization called the Weathermen who favored violence. By 1968, the SDS rapidly kept
growing which created chaos and hectic for the group. Then in June of 1969, the Progressive Labor
party, a small group from the Old Left which took it over and made the SDS collapse. After that
only the Weatherman remained but in 1970 it disappeared as a New Left political

leaders, soldiers, and the American public.
a. Pearl Harbor was an attack on American soil that was visible to the nation through newsbreaks
and local stations.
b. Where as doubts surrounded the attacks in the Gulf of Tonkin and the American public had no
idea of what actually happened during the attacks.
c. The attack on Pearl Harbor gave the American people, and soldiers, a remainder throughout the

Power Of The Free World
He thought regardless of each's own individual political outlook, it was un–American not to serve.
"If all people shared this distorted thought process, then we could never have won Second World
War and we would only have one uncle, not Uncle Sam, Uncle Adolf."
Eventually, looking back, he realized the war was based on the false pretense of the Domino theory
and the false doctrine of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. To explain, the domino theory asserted that
if one free nation fell to communism, many more would follow and, as per President Eisenhower, its
consequences would be "incalculable to the free world". America, seeking to justify its title of
protector of the free world, fought the war with the aim to preserve a separate, independent,
noncommunist government in North Vietnam. The war was fully escalated following the Gulf of
Tonkin Resolution, which in essence, became the de facto authorization of military force in Vietnam
until 1971. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was issued after the "attack" of USS Maddox by North
Vietnamese torpedoes. Kennedy's claim that "all of Southeast Asia would be under control of
communists and under domination of the Chinese" has been largely discredited as by 1981 none of
the South East Asian countries had fallen victim communist guerillas. While historical evidence
proved the "domino theory" false, the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution seemed largely misguided from the
outset; merely an excuse to start war with the North Vietnamese.

President Lyndon. B Johnson and the Vietnam War Essay
The conflict in Vietnam for the United States started when President Dwight D. Eisenhower went
along with the domino theory and sent in military advisors in South Vietnam to stop the communist
movement from taking place in South Vietnam. The Vietnam conflict was between the communist's
and the United States. North Vietnam was led by Ho Chi Minh, and Ho Chi Minh led the Viet Cong,
a guerilla group to help spread communism. The United States were supporters of the South
Vietnam because they wanted them to maintain their government rather than falling to the domino
theory of communism. After Eisenhower's term ended John F. Kennedy became president and took
control of the situation of Vietnam but on November 22, 1963, Kennedy was ... Show more content

What made this even more difficult was that he "had not given much attention to Vietnam or to
foreign affairs in general" (Moise 30). For a nation like the United States in need of a decision on
the fly, this was very troubling. Earlier "President Johnson felt that Harry Truman, in 1950, had
erred by going into the Korean War without getting firm commitment of support from the congress"
(Moise 226). In other words it appeared to be that Johnson would be careful about getting involved
in a conflict like Vietnam. Being careful to say the least was not the case at all. There was not much
serious thought in escalating the Vietnam War until the Tonkin Gulf incident occurred. In the Gulf of
Tonkin it was reported "that two American destroyers had been attacked by North Vietnamese PT
boats on August 4, 1964," (Friedman 293). Shortly after these incidents, "Johnson immediately
escalated the war by ordering airstrikes on North Vietnam" (Friedman 293). These events made it so
Johnson could raise United States involvement in Vietnam without congressional backing on his
decisions. Increasing involvement in the war was appealing though because after the Tonkin Gulf
incident support of military involvement in North Vietnam raised from thirty one percent approvals
to fifty percent approval (Moise 226). Although approval of the amount in favor immediately after
the Gulf of Tonkin incident rose, it was a "mistake on Johnson's part... assuming that the

Lyndon B. Johnson 's Letter
Introduction Lyndon B. Johnson, sworn into office on November twenty–second of nineteen sixty–
three after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, was president during the Gulf of Tonkin incident.
(White House) This incident was when "the U.S. destroyer Maddox exchanged shots with North
Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin." (History). Due to his place in the presidential
office, Johnson had to make a tough decision. This decision required him to make an appearance
before Congress to explain himself, and he did. In his message to Congress, titled Message to
Congress Concerning the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, he defended his actions. With his use of loaded
language, examples, and repetition, Lyndon B. Johnson presented a compelling ... Show more

Johnson then goes on to tell that America also signed a treaty in nineteen sixty–two that recognized
the neutrality of the small country of Laos. He then states that North Vietnam also signed these
treaties. He continues on to say that North Vietnam is now willfully going against those treaties by
having conflicts in Laos, as well as being aggressive to the United States and the Republic of
Vietnam. Johnson goes into closing after this, stating that North Vietnam disregarded the world's
will for peace. He then says that this conflict is not new. He says that America has faced similar
conflict in places like Cuba and Greece. He then makes it known that America will not attack a
peaceful country, but rather retaliate to the aggression of hostile ones. He closes by directly
addressing all other Americans, stating that America is not divided even in this time of conflict.
Analysis
In Message to Congress Concerning the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, Lyndon B. Johnson uses various
types of rhetoric. The first that is noticed is his use of loaded language. As with most political
statements, words are chosen very carefully. Johnson's message is a prime example of this fact.
When describing the Gulf of Tonkin incident, Johnson says that, "On August 2 the United States
destroyer Maddox was attacked on the high seas in the Gulf of Tonkin by hostile vessels of the

Essay on The War in Vietnam
The War in Vietnam
America became increasingly involved in the war in Vietnam, mainly because of the domino theory,
the fear of the spread of communism. If South Vietnam fell to the communist the US feared that
communism would spread throughout Asia and to neighbouring countries. The influence of the
previous presidents also caused another main reason for the US to become more involved in
Vietnam. But there is one underlining fact; if the 'French had not left, America would not have
become involved in Vietnam at all. There are many more reasons for America to increase
involvement in Vietnam, and all of these can be listed in long and short–term reasons, such as
Domino theory being long term and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What Eisenhower wanted was to hit Communism at source, the domino, which was Vietnam. There
was already domino's which fell, China fell (turned communist) in 1949, and communism had also
spread to the western side of the world, just 90 miles off America, in Cuba under Fidel Castro. Cuba
was being supplied by the USSR, who had been communist since 1917. America had been at war
with the USSR (the Cold War) in fear Communism spreading. With other countries (like Cuba)
turning communist, it gave Russia more power. It was a competition of ideology, which system
worked best; communism or democracy. The USSR supplied Cuba with Nuclear Missile's; this
sparked the Cuban Missile Crisis, which proved the Domino Theory and the need to "prop up"
Vietnam (the domino) to stop it falling and communism spreading. The Soviet's had already
expanded through Europe, the whole of Eastern Europe falling to communism, Churchill said, " An
Iron Curtain has drawn over Europe". This gave a reason for America to increase involvement in
Vietnam, to stop another domino falling.
Aside from the Domino Theory, another main reason why America got involved was because of the
French Exit in Vietnam. The main point for this reason is that if the French hadn't left Vietnam
America wouldn't have to get involved at all. When the French left, it left a void in Vietnam, that

The Constitution is the ground rules of our democracy. Without it, this country would have never
been constructed into what it is now. Each of its bylaws holds a crucial piece of the importance of
this country's rules. Located in Section 1, Article 8; are the rules on war, an immensely important
topic. According to the constitution, only Congress holds the power to declare war. During the
course of 230 years, The United States has declared a total of only five wars; The War of 1812, the
Mexican–American War, the Spanish–American War, World War I, and World War II. There are
other wars in which Congress authorized, but did not declare. Most Congressionally–authorized, but

Kennedy, Linden B. Johnson was declared President of the United States. Johnson had planned to
carry on Kennedy's plans for the country, but he was more interested in putting an end to
communism. In order for this to happen, Johnson needed to stop it at the very beginning; Korea.
Even though he held a good reason, ending communism wasn't enough to start a war. Johnson
needed an event to declare war in a fair manner, and the Gulf of Tonkin was the perfect event. The

The Gulf Of Tonkin Incident
Under the Johnson legislation, the Gulf of Tonkin Incident was a catalyst that inevitably escalated
the American involvement in the Vietnam War. It was on August 2nd 1964 that three Vietnamese
torpedo boats allegedly attacked the American destroyer, the U.S.S Maddox. Apprehensive of losing
more countries to communist ideals, the U.S intervened ten years prior to the incident in the Gulf of
Tonkin without any major military campaigns. Influenced by former president Eisenhower's Domino
Theory, which stated that if one country is communist, the other countries would be influenced by
communist ideals, Lyndon B. Johnson and his administration was led to believe that the United
States was obligated to stop the spread of communism. It was the incident in the Gulf of Tonkin
where the U.S had its first major encounter with the North Vietnamese. Allied with the south, the
Gulf of Tonkin had plunged the United States further into a full scale war. However, with America's
response to escalate the war, many people wonder even today if the Gulf of Tonkin was truly a
counter offensive from the North Vietnamese. Did the U.S really act responding to Vietnamese
aggression or did the U.S just declare that they responded to an act of aggression just to escalate the
war? Under the lead of President Harry Truman, in 1947, a foreign policy doctrine was forged
during the Cold War called the "Containment Policy" which states that the United States did not aim

Reasons Against The Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution
Many people were against the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution because it sent millions of troops to
Vietnam to fight a war many Americans didn't seem necessary. Americans realized that after the

officially passed. Many Americans did not want to be in any wars and a very large majority just did
not want to be halfway around the world in Vietnam, fighting a war that was unnecessary in their
eyes. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution gave President Johnson a blank check so he had full control of
the military and most of the American taxpayer's money at his disposal. People were not excited to

North Vietnamese defense forces were expected to be quite active because covert operations were
being carried out by boats out of Danang, South Vietnam under Operations Plan 34A (OPLAN

during the first hours of July 31. The Maddox was aware of these covert operations, but did not plan
its' route based on them. During the afternoon of August 2, three North Vietnamese torpedo boats
from the island of Hon Me attacked the Maddox when it was not far by, and this was the first attack.
The Maddox left the Gulf of Tonkin afterwards, but returned on August 3, with the USS Turner Joy,
as they were heading away from the North Vietnamese coastline they believed they were being

the Turner Joy, but not on the radar of the Maddox. Some men aboard the destroyers believed that
what had appeared on the radar were ghost images, while others believe that they were actual

The United States ' Military Functions As The World 's Police
After the Civil War and by the mid–20th century, the United States had become the governing force
in international relations. Some have argues that the United States' military functions as the world's
"police." This essay covers international events from the past five years that can be tracked back to a
foreign policy created after the Civil War and the manner in which this shift occurred and the
consequences the United States faces as a result of its status as policemen of the world. Also, the
action against Korea, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the attempt to stop Expansion of Soviet Expansion
during the Cold War are all discussed in this essay. When a country like American, take charge of
certain responsibilities they are regarded as the Policemen of the world. So far, America has been
the faultless example of the Policeman of the world. America has undertaken several precautionary
measures for the prevention of any future World Wars and implemented the policies that would
prevent any future nuclear development. Nevertheless, America itself possesses atomic power and in
spite of this fact, it has banned other countries from further development (Rosita, 2010) its main
focus is to maintain stability and dominance over other countries. So as stated earlier the action
against Korea, Iran, Iraq, etc. has been put into place under foreign policies. America has since the

Was the Gulf of Tonkin incident really an incident or were the 2 attacks on the USS Maddox within

congressional approval for escalating the confrontation with North Vietnam. The government has

Codenamed Operations Plan (OPLAN) 34A, the activities were conceived and overseen by the
Department of Defense, with the support of the Central Intelligence Agency, and carried out by the
South Vietnamese Navy. Initial successes, however, were limited; numerous South Vietnamese
raiders were captured, and OPLAN 34A units suffered heavy casualties. In July 1964, Lieutenant
General William C. Westmoreland, commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam,
shifted the operation's tactics from commando attacks on land to shore bombardments using
mortars, rockets, and recoilless rifles fired from South Vietnamese patrol boats. It is also notable that
McNamara in this conversation clearly favors explaining to Congress the link between the incident
and the OPLAN–34A activities. The naval battle between the destroyer USS Maddox and several
North Vietnamese torpedo boats occurred in the immediate aftermath of a series of 34–A maritime

when later queried by NSA headquarters, the destroyer indicated she had been unaware of the

Johnson Decision To Americanize The Vietnam War Essay
LBJ's decision to Americanize the war was not wise and well–informed, an accurate answer for U.S.
defeat in Vietnam was the decision to Americanize the war. Influencing the belief that Johnson'
decision to escalate appeared to have been predetermined; Johnson consistently appeared to be in
favor of increasing military in South Vietnam, and he only needed something to happen in order to
validate his reasoning for the increase of U.S. involvement. This something was the Tonkin Gulf
incident and this event became Johnson's basis "to take all necessary measures to repel any armed
attack against the forces of the United States..." (Young, 119); that this was a declaration of war
(Hunt, 67). However, this incident, as Nicholas Katzenbach said, "was ... Show more content on

Even with the approval of congress towards the Tonkin Gulf incident showed a "misuse of power"
(Rotter, 77). When Dante B. Fascell said "The president needed authority. Who cared about the facts
of the so–called incident that would trigger this authority? So the resolution was just hammered
right on through by everyone" (Young, 120); this recollection makes it appear as through the Tonkin
Gulf incident decision was not well–informed. The resolution was the issue of Johnson's authority
and the potential that offensive measures in South Vietnam could lead to a third world war (Young,
121). Another example that Americanization was unwise and not well–informed was Johnson
ignoring the George Ball about better solutions to help America leave the war. Once again it is the
issue with Johnson's authority, he constantly ignores other possibilities of leaving Vietnam. At the
end the Johnson administration would choose three tactics: bombing the North, intensify the war in
the South using U.S. troops, and concentration on pacification of the

The Tonkin Gulf Resolution on August 7
America has gone through prosperity and depression as a country, but we overcome and grow and
learn from our history to shape our future. During the course of 1965, Lyndon B Johnson set the
stage for three years of legislation that completed the Domestic transformation of the United States
which began three decades earlier with FDR's New Deal, but would be overshadowed by an
aggressive foreign policy driven by his support of containment and the domino theory. LBJ's
presidency underwent evolution as it progresses beginning as an extension of John F. Kennedy's
presidency and evolving into an aggressive, legacy of destruction and violence. Early in Johnson's
foreign evolvements he encounters many difficulties and lack of progress ... Show more content on

Up until this event Johnson's foreign policy was quite similar to Kennedy's, whereas after the
resolution his new foreign policies deepened the U.S. involvement in Vietnam to a much larger
extent. The effects could be seen shortly after the resolution, as immediate increases in military
assistance were ordered, causing some 25,000 American combat troops in Vietnam by 1964.
Additionally, by the spring of 1965 there were constant American aerial raids on North Vietnam,
which was a part of an operation, called "Rolling Thunder". Johnson and his advisors greatly
supported this operation in the hope of damaging North Vietnam's war–making infrastructure and its
lines of supply. This operation which emerged from the Tonkin resolution also set Johnson's foreign
policy apart from Kennedy's. It was the first sustained U.S. military operation in Vietnam, which
demonstrated Johnson's greater military commitment to Vietnam. This trend of continuously sending
more and more American troops continued, which can be clearly seen when Johnson finally decided
in July of 1965 for an open–ended military commitment. Johnson was able to completely
Americanize the war and rush thousands of ground troops into Vietnam. This can be especially seen
when comparing the maximum number of Kennedy's military advisors of 16,000 by November
1963 with Johnson's 500,000 American troops in Vietnam by 1968. Although

Why Did The Us Go To Vietnam Before The Gulf Of Tonkin
The United States did not intend to go to Vietnam before the Gulf of Tonkin incident because the
United States needed permission from their citizens and Congress to be involved in the war. They
also did not want the war to end up like the war in Korea. The first reason why the United States did
not intend go to Vietnam before the Gulf of Tonkin incident was because the United States needed
the American people and the Congress' consent in order to be part of the war. In the Telegram From
the Department of State (Rusk) to the Embassy in Vietnam (Lodge), May 22, 1964, it says, "Once
such publicity occurred, I think you can see that the finger would point straight at us and that the
President would then be put in perhaps a far more difficult position toward the American public and
the Congress." This means that the United States cannot be part of the war because they do not have
the consent of the people and the President would get a lot of negative backlash if there was one. ...

Gulf Of Tonkin Research Paper
The Gulf of Tonkin was known as the USS Maddox incident. It happened on August 2, 1964. It was
the international confrontation that led to the United States engaging more directly in the Vietnam
War. The original American report blamed North Vietnam for both incidents. It became very
controversial with widespread claim that either one or both incidents were false. While performing a
signal intelligence patrol as part of the DESOTO operations, they were pursued by three North
Vietnamese Navy torpedo boats. Maddox fired three warning shots. The Maddox expended over 280
3–inch and 5–inch shells in a sea battle. Soon after the North Vietnamese boats then attacked. They
attacked with their torpedoes boats and lots of machine gun fire.

Lyndon Johnson and the Tonkin Gulf Resolution Essay
Lyndon Johnson and the Tonkin Gulf Resolution
The official rhetoric of Lyndon Johnson's administration portrayed the Gulf of Tonkin incident as an
unprovoked and malicious attack on U.S. ships by the armed forces of North Vietnam, as a result of
which the President needed the power to deal militarily with the North Vietnamese. The Gulf of
Tonkin incident explicitly encompasses military actions on August 2, and alleged actions on
August 4, 1964, between North Vietnamese torpedo patrol boats and
United States destroyers and aircraft off the coast of North Vietnam.
President Johnson and many top administration officials declared that the United States was

In addition, this paper will argue that the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution itself and the rhetoric of
President Johnson and his advisers show that the top officials in the U.S. government had an attitude
of insincerity toward South Vietnam as an independent country. The stepping–up of military efforts
by the U.S. in the first nine months of Lyndon Johnson's presidency was motivated by a self–serving
sentiment, which was to show the world the United States' political resolve with regard to the spread
of Communism.
In essence, the passage of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution enabled President Johnson to use whatever
means necessary to do what he wanted to do, or felt he needed to do, in Southeast Asia. Immediately
after what has become known as the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the
President asked Congress for the power to use overt military force in
Vietnam without the declaration of war. At the time, however, it was extremely unclear exactly what
had taken place in the Gulf and whether or not the Resolution asked for was legitimate and just.

King Louis Xiv Vietnam Analysis
Here we have an exchange of letters between King Louis XIV of France and the King of Tonkin of
Vietnam. They are expressing to each other their devotion to each of their religious customs. Louis
wants the King of Tonkin to establish his religion (Christianity) in Vietnam. The King of Tonkin,
however, wants his "ancient customs" to remain in place. In the perspective of Louis XIV, he seems
very courteous towards the King of Tonkin. He complements him as a "magnanimous Prince...as
illustrious through his military valor..." and expresses his gratitude to him for the kind treatment of
his Christian subjects sent to Vietnam. He does, however, seem to express an ulterior, self–fulfilling
motive with little regard for the religious custom in Vietnam.

Johnson's Tactics During The Vietnam War
Amongst Civil Rights protests and the beginnings of the counterculture movement, America was
trying stop the spread of communism in Vietnam. Americans feared the Domino Effect (the idea that
if one country fell to communism, the rest would soon follow); therefore, many were willing to do
whatever it took to stop communism in its tracks. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, the primary result
of the attacks that took place against the United States by North Vietnam, was ultimately a
declaration of war, which can be supported by evidence from both the executive and legislative
branches and the media. The president's own cabinet members and bureaucrats admitted that the war
in Vietnam was of great enough magnitude to be considered a full–on war. Congress ... Show more

that the resolution had. Nothing but a full–scale war would cause such dramatic increases in military
personnel and death. In a New York Times article by E.W. Kenworthy, it is stated that "the Gulf of

war." In this, it is apparent that multiple sources believed the resolution to be of equal weight to a

Machiavelli Ideals
From the start of recorded history, there have been rulers that have ruled over their people with an
iron fist, so much so that it has caused revolutions and leadership changes due to their tyrannical
ruling and hatred by the people. However, Niccolo Machiavelli wrote his The Prince to help give
rulers his suggestion on how they should rule over their people so that the prince can protect his
land, the people, and not have a revolution happen to throw them out of power. However, that was
written over five hundred years ago, and times have long since changed, but it is interesting to see if
Machiavelli's ideals still hold true in today's everchanging world. In my case, I decided to compare
Machiavelli's ideals to British Prime Minister Theresa May, who as of 2016, was the most publicly
approved politician in Britain since the end of WWII.
One of the hardest things for a public official to receive from the public is their trust. Therefore, it is
interesting when officials lie. Machiavelli says, "Everyone sees what you seem to be, few perceive
what you actually are...for ordinary people are deceived by appearances and by the outcome of a
thing; and in the world, there is nothing but ordinary people." (231) In my first article, about the
passport security in the European Union, Dorling says "Politicians say one thing when they want to
act tough in public, Theresa May herself admits– instruct officials to relax checks on EU passport
holders in private. Then they have to act

Essay about Tim O'Brien's War Stories
Highly controversial, the Vietnam War incited widespread anti–war protests throughout the United
States. Those most averse to the war were the young adults who were greatly affected by the draft.
Consequently, many demonstrations were held at colleges and universities. Strongly opposed to the
conflict in Vietnam, Tim O'Brien participated in many of these rallies during his time at Macalester
College in St. Paul, Minnesota. Although O'Brien had a bright future awaiting him at Harvard
Graduate School, his political career was cut short upon receiving a draft notice just weeks after
graduating. O'Brien was sent to Vietnam where he served from 1968 to 1970 in an infantry unit.
Upon returning from the war, O'Brien described his experiences in a ... Show more content on

In his story, Sanders attempts to provide a moral to the story and swears that the whole thing was
true. He has a difficult time producing a moral however, because as the narrator had previously
stated, "a true war story is never moral" ("How to Tell a True War Story"). Also, Sander later reveals
to the narrator that he has had to make some things up while telling the story to get it right.
Throughout the piece, the narrator continually interjects commentary introducing details about what
he believes constitutes a true war story. One of the main things the narrator becomes conscious of
during the story is that sometimes facts can contradict themselves; it is possible for someone to
remember an event differently every time they look back on it. In the end however, the narrator
admits that his previous story about Curt Lemon wasn't true and that a "true war story is never about
war" (ibid). "O'Brien's work is more about the quest for truth, the use of the imagination in telling
the truth, and the art of storytelling in creating the truth than it is about the Vietnam War"
(Henningfield). In another short story, "On the Rainy River," O'Brien describes his own experience
upon being drafted to the war through the eyes of his main character, Tim O'Brien. Although
O'Brien claims that it is a fictional story, many events coincide with his own life experiences. The
story begins with an adult O'Brien analyzing what courage

Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution Essay
On August 7, 1964, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which authorized Johnson to
take necessary measures to retaliate and promote the peace and security in Southeast Asia. Congress
was definitely wrong in doing so. The results of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution were too chaotic and
too violent to overlook. By 1964, the US–desperate to contain communism–had already sent troops
to support South Vietnamese leader, Ngo Dinh Diem. Ngo Dinh Diem couldn't end communist
infiltrations of the South; such infiltrations were otherwise known as the Viet Cong (South
Vietnamese communist guerillas), who made their debut to the South in 1959. Diem did not receive
loyalty and his rule was so "deteriorated that he was overthrown and assassinated by several of his
generals with the tacit approval of the Kennedy Administrations"¹ in 1963; ... Show more content on

On August 2, they reported an attack by the North Vietnamese patrols; the destroyer USS Maddox

US aircraft and boat, three damaged North Vietnamese torpedo boats, and 10 North Vietnamese
casualties. Following this minor attack was a second aggression on the 4th of August in which false
radar images were found; thus, no real North Vietnamese torpedo boats were around the radar

The Start Of The Vietnam War
The "Start" of the Vietnam War The U.S. has been involved in numerous wars, but the most tragic
and devastating war the U.S. has been a part of was the Vietnam War. The U.S. did not necessarily
have to be involved in this war, but one certain attack that happened during this period of time
during the war could have been the starting point of the United State's involvement in the war. On
August 4, 1964, war broke out between the U.S. and the North Vietnamese when the USS Maddox
was attacked. Due to the attack on the USS Maddox, Congress passed the Tonkin Gulf Resolution.
The attack on the Maddox may have been the official starting point of war between the U.S and
North Vietnamese, and it led to many more years of war and tragedy. The Vietnam War began with
the South against the North in Vietnam. The U.S. started off helping the South as allies, but soon
were involved in the war against the North more than they had ever thought they would have been.
On August 2, 1964 the USS Maddox was covering for the south in the international waters of the
Tonkin Gulf. The North saw this and quickly reacted. They saw the U.S. as enemies and were not
afraid to attack. The first attack from the North was by three torpedo boats. They were traveling at
high speeds and when they were caught on radar, the Maddox knew they were not in safe territory
and soon began to send many messages to their control room (Paterson). Captain of the USS
Maddox, Captain Herrick, ordered gun crews to fire at

Media Affects of the Vietnam War Essay
Media Affects of the Vietnam War War is truly a horrific event that unfortunately occurs in our
world frequently. There are a variety of ethical questions surrounding war, such as how much should
citizens know about the fighting? When it comes to reporting the news, it is the goal of the network
to report the news first. The benefit to this is people will turn to them first when it comes to breaking
stories. However if the news is delivered based on speed and not accuracy this can be harmful to
society. War is a very serious event and should not be taken lightly. Therefore, reporters must make
sure facts are correct and unbiased. In both the Vietnam War and our current war we see reporters

Lies and corruption capture people. Therefore people will always pay attention to the stories about
our government lying to us. These weapons have still not been found and this is extremely similar to
how the ship may not have ever been shot down in Tonkin. Despite numerous inaccurate reports
there were attempts of trying to report the war accurately. However whenever a news channel would
report Americans getting killed in Vietnam the government would work quickly to cover it up.
President Nixon is quoted as saying "the press is our biggest enemy." This one phrase sums up the
war. The press would try to report fairly to the American people, but the government would squash it
and make the press look bad (Media Beat Vietnam War, Solomon and Cohen). Therefore the press
would only report good things so that the government would look highly upon them and give them
better seating in white house briefings. This highly affected the people working in Vietnam. They
were forced to be there, and the stories they were trying to report were not even reported. There are
certainly a lot of examples of war reporting being inaccurate. When we read John Kerry's letters to
his mother we realized what Kerry was telling his mother and what his mother was hearing on TV
were two totally different stories. Kerry wrote to his mother about bloodshed,

How The Vietnam War Changed America
"No event in the past half–century of American history has commanded a morep rominent place in
the public consciousness than the Vietnam War" (Hall xi), a rightfully said statement. Lasting from
1960–1975, it is America's longest war and changed the United States politically, socially, and
culturally during that period. In the early 1970s, the voting age was lowered to 18, largely because
of the war. Also, Vietnam was one of the first wars in which African Americans largely participated.
Lastly, Vietnam changed America culturally by causing mistrust in government. In the 1960s
through early '70s, the Vietnam War changed America in ways that nothing had ever done before.

While African Americans were allowed in the armed forces they still faced racism, and some
thought that the draft laws were favoring middle and upper class whites. Although the draft laws
were not intended to be racist, they made it significantly harder for blacks to be exempt from
service. For example, "...eligible men from the middle and upper class could normally find ways of
avoiding service, or at least service in Vietnam, meaning the burden of the draft fell on working
class whites and minorities. Consequently, African Americans were drafted in disproportionately
higher numbers than were whites" (Hall 150). However, after their enlistments were up, more than
two thirds of eligible African Americans chose to re–enlist while only around 12 percent of whites
chose to remain in the armed forces. Yet, as much as blacks reenlisted in the military, many thought
that they were the last to receive promotions. Lionel Anderson wrote to the Black Panther, "Black
people are the last to be promoted, as far as rank goes" (Hall 159). In reality, the number of blacks in
the officer corps in Vietnam was small, only about 5 percent. Yet, the Vietnam War offered African
Americans opportunities they had never had before and used them to change the military in a way
not done previously. The Vietnam

many innocent lives because it was a do or die situation. They did not know which civilians were

Lindy Tonkin High Office Politics
Office politics are not different than any other politics. This is a way of getting ahead by
manipulating people. It is process of using connections and social networks for personal gains. It is a
way of using power to control others. Office politics are not the same as gossip. Gossips are used for
entertainment and sensation only. Politics require some tactic and strategies to achieve the result.
Thanks to office politics, a person who is less qualified than his coworker gets promoted. In turn, the
promoted person will feel insecure in the new role and will put down coworkers to show her/his
power.
Mild office politics motivates employees to work harder and compete to achieve a common goal.
High office politics make simple tasks complex, organizations are ineffective, employees are burned

Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution

  • 1. Gulf of Tonkin Resolution Although the United States never declared an official war on North Vietnam, the United State participated heavily in the war because of the Gulf of Tonkin's Resolution. In the Gulf of Tonkin, the United States's ship, Maddox, was being attacked by the North Vietnamese. In response to this, Congress and the House of Representatives passed the Gulf of Tonkin's Resolution. It allowed the President to combat communism in any way he felt would be appropriate for the situation. (2) In the Vietnam War's case, it was to help South Vietnam by sending in many American soldiers and helping them financially. Some might argue that the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution could be considered an unofficial and informal declaration of war because of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 2. Gulf Of Tonkin Research Paper Many people believe that the Gulf of Tonkin Incident is responsible for increased U.S. escalation in Vietnam. President Johnson and his administration claimed that the incident involved unprovoked attacks on U.S. destroyers (Herring, 165). People had questioned what had actually occurred even back then. I believe the Johnson administration was looking for a reason to escalate American involvement and that the Gulf of Tonkin Incident provided the perfect opportunity. American policy in South Vietnam was not as effective as many had thought. I do not believe the Gulf of Tonkin Incident itself incited U.S. escalation but rather the erroneous information about what had actually occurred. Following the first attack on U.S. ships by North Vietnamese patrol boats, the Whitehouse claimed that a second attack had occurred, ordered airstrikes in retaliation, and then used the incident to justify the president's use of U.S. military forces in Vietnam (Duiker, 165). This would seem reasonable on the surface because not many people were aware of what had actually occurred during the incident. I believe it was a way to gain support for U.S. escalation in the area by claiming that the North Vietnamese were the aggressors. ... It seems to me that the Johnson administration didn't seem to really question what had occurred. Furthermore, McNamara and his advisers "seem to have selected form the conflicting evidence those parts that confirmed what they wanted to believe" (Herring, 149). • 3. Swot Analysis Of Doughnut Time ( 2016 ) Doughnut Time (2016) is a Brisbane based company, specialising in a variety of premium desserts that capitalise on the use of social media, unique locations and offerings (refer to table 1). Despite desserts being considered non–essential, high levels of competition and healthy eating trends (refer to table 1), the business has successfully established itself within the fast food and dessert industry, which is set to grow in the next five years (Tonkin, 2016). The company has a distinctive vintage flair, yet modern take on doughnut names and designs, becoming popular on social media (Doughnut Time, 2016). When analysing these main factors, Doughnut Time appears to be posed for product development, taking advantage of opportunities through the use of menu innovation and promotion deals (Newstex, 2014). II. MARKETING GOAL To increase the sales volume of Doughnut Time by 15% in 6 months III. MARKETING STRATEGY Doughnut Time's domestic target audience is consumers between the ages of 15–24 who live in urban locations where Doughnut Time is accessible (Stone, 2016). This segment is comprised of high school students, university students and new practitioners (Tonkin, 2016). According to Tonkin (2016), consumers in this demographic are a key market for the fast food industry and provide stability and revenue growth. This target audience is suitable for Doughnut Time as these consumers are less health–conscious than older counterparts and are strongly affected by technology and economics (Tonkin, 2016). The United States was going by constitutional obligation to meet Communist aggression against any of the parties within the Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty. President Johnson, whom requested the resolution, felt that it was a demonstration of Americas' unity. Also, when asked about what happened in the Tonkin Gulf, former Defense Secretary replied, "Absolutely nothing". In the future Congress should look back on this and understand that approving something just for popular opinion is not the way to go about governing. This new president would not start war in Vietnam, but would see tensions rise in the area and reactionary measures. For instance, not even eight days after his inauguration, JFK had approved a counterinsurgency plan for the army of South Vietnam. This gave them funds to increase their army by 20,000 men, and authorized agents to operate in the North Vietnamese territory ("The Cold"). Kennedy feared for the safety of the region, and so in 1961, he sent General Maxwell Taylor and Walt Rostow to South Vietnam. Upon the two men's return to the United States, they reported to the president that it was possible for the South Vietnamese to defeat the Northern aggressors if the United States provided strong political backing as well as strong military and economic backing. They also recommended that the President send 8,000 soldiers into the region to help fight. JFK did not send in the troops, but he sent up to 15,000 military advisors ("The Cold"). Throughout Kennedy's term in office, the war had been escalating very slowly, and by March 1962, the U.S. had established a Military Assistance Command in Saigon, the South Vietnamese capital ("The Cold"). By the time of Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963, the U.S. had 70 dead, 12,000 military advisors in the region, and was costing the taxpayers $400 million dollars a year ("The Cold"). In the spring of 1964, military personal developed a mission to attack North Vietnam, but Lyndon B. Johnson worried that the people would not support the growing war. Later that same year, powerful forces had gotten control over almost half of South Vietnam. As of that time Johnson was being criticized by the Senator Barry Goldwater, for not handling the war more aggressively. It was a white, radical, New Left organization. The group started off mainly as a white male group against communist, but it became a critical point for the student movement. The Students for a Democratic Society disapproval of the Vietnam War made it a symbol to the New Left. The New Left referred to the generation of Americans in the 1960s who were of age and opposed of the Vietnam War and wanted to make change within the civil rights movement. The New Left was largely made of college students and the Students for a Democratic Society was the first group to be established for those principles. Two years after the SDS was formed, fifty–nine members met in Michigan for a political platform that said universities should be the focus point of "participatory democracy." That goal set in Michigan made the SDS want to help with transferring power from representatives to individuals. The SDS's ideas got the attention of many college students, with most of them being influenced by the efforts of trying direct democracy. In 1963, the SDS established the Economic Research and Action Project to start practicing participatory democracy. The SDS then turned to be antiwar and in April of 1965 it held the first of several protests against the Vietnam War. Then in 1968, the students protested on the campus of Columbia University due to their participation in war related help. The protest was soon ended by New York police who injured over 200 students and arrested about 700. By the late 1960s SDS divided into a Marxist–Leninist group and an organization called the Weathermen who favored violence. By 1968, the SDS rapidly kept growing which created chaos and hectic for the group. • 8. Power Of The Free World He thought regardless of each's own individual political outlook, it was un–American not to serve. "If all people shared this distorted thought process, then we could never have won Second World War and we would only have one uncle, not Uncle Sam, Uncle Adolf." Eventually, looking back, he realized the war was based on the false pretense of the Domino theory and the false doctrine of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. To explain, the domino theory asserted that if one free nation fell to communism, many more would follow and, as per President Eisenhower, its consequences would be "incalculable to the free world". America, seeking to justify its title of protector of the free world, fought the war with the aim to preserve a separate, independent, noncommunist government in North Vietnam. The war was fully escalated following the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which in essence, became the de facto authorization of military force in Vietnam until 1971. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was issued after the "attack" of USS Maddox by North Vietnamese torpedoes. Kennedy's claim that "all of Southeast Asia would be under control of communists and under domination of the Chinese" has been largely discredited as by 1981 none of the South East Asian countries had fallen victim communist guerillas. While historical evidence proved the "domino theory" false, the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution seemed largely misguided from the outset; merely an excuse to start war with the North Vietnamese. ... • 9. President Lyndon. B Johnson and the Vietnam War Essay The conflict in Vietnam for the United States started when President Dwight D. Eisenhower went along with the domino theory and sent in military advisors in South Vietnam to stop the communist movement from taking place in South Vietnam. The Vietnam conflict was between the communist's and the United States. North Vietnam was led by Ho Chi Minh, and Ho Chi Minh led the Viet Cong, a guerilla group to help spread communism. The United States were supporters of the South Vietnam because they wanted them to maintain their government rather than falling to the domino theory of communism. After Eisenhower's term ended John F. Kennedy became president and took control of the situation of Vietnam but on November 22, 1963, Kennedy was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What made this even more difficult was that he "had not given much attention to Vietnam or to foreign affairs in general" (Moise 30). For a nation like the United States in need of a decision on the fly, this was very troubling. Earlier "President Johnson felt that Harry Truman, in 1950, had erred by going into the Korean War without getting firm commitment of support from the congress" (Moise 226). In other words it appeared to be that Johnson would be careful about getting involved in a conflict like Vietnam. Being careful to say the least was not the case at all. There was not much serious thought in escalating the Vietnam War until the Tonkin Gulf incident occurred. In the Gulf of Tonkin it was reported "that two American destroyers had been attacked by North Vietnamese PT boats on August 4, 1964," (Friedman 293). Shortly after these incidents, "Johnson immediately escalated the war by ordering airstrikes on North Vietnam" (Friedman 293). These events made it so Johnson could raise United States involvement in Vietnam without congressional backing on his decisions. Increasing involvement in the war was appealing though because after the Tonkin Gulf incident support of military involvement in North Vietnam raised from thirty one percent approvals to fifty percent approval (Moise 226). Although approval of the amount in favor immediately after the Gulf of Tonkin incident rose, it was a "mistake on Johnson's part... assuming that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Lyndon B. Johnson 's Letter Introduction Lyndon B. Johnson, sworn into office on November twenty–second of nineteen sixty– three after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, was president during the Gulf of Tonkin incident. (White House) This incident was when "the U.S. destroyer Maddox exchanged shots with North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin." (History). Due to his place in the presidential office, Johnson had to make a tough decision. This decision required him to make an appearance before Congress to explain himself, and he did. In his message to Congress, titled Message to Congress Concerning the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, he defended his actions. With his use of loaded language, examples, and repetition, Lyndon B. Johnson presented a compelling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Johnson then goes on to tell that America also signed a treaty in nineteen sixty–two that recognized the neutrality of the small country of Laos. He then states that North Vietnam also signed these treaties. He continues on to say that North Vietnam is now willfully going against those treaties by having conflicts in Laos, as well as being aggressive to the United States and the Republic of Vietnam. Johnson goes into closing after this, stating that North Vietnam disregarded the world's will for peace. He then says that this conflict is not new. He says that America has faced similar conflict in places like Cuba and Greece. He then makes it known that America will not attack a peaceful country, but rather retaliate to the aggression of hostile ones. He closes by directly addressing all other Americans, stating that America is not divided even in this time of conflict. Analysis In Message to Congress Concerning the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, Lyndon B. Johnson uses various types of rhetoric. The first that is noticed is his use of loaded language. As with most political statements, words are chosen very carefully. Johnson's message is a prime example of this fact. • 12. Essay on The War in Vietnam The War in Vietnam America became increasingly involved in the war in Vietnam, mainly because of the domino theory, the fear of the spread of communism. If South Vietnam fell to the communist the US feared that communism would spread throughout Asia and to neighbouring countries. The influence of the previous presidents also caused another main reason for the US to become more involved in Vietnam. But there is one underlining fact; if the 'French had not left, America would not have become involved in Vietnam at all. There are many more reasons for America to increase involvement in Vietnam, and all of these can be listed in long and short–term reasons, such as Domino theory being long term and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What Eisenhower wanted was to hit Communism at source, the domino, which was Vietnam. There was already domino's which fell, China fell (turned communist) in 1949, and communism had also spread to the western side of the world, just 90 miles off America, in Cuba under Fidel Castro. Cuba was being supplied by the USSR, who had been communist since 1917. America had been at war with the USSR (the Cold War) in fear Communism spreading. With other countries (like Cuba) turning communist, it gave Russia more power. It was a competition of ideology, which system worked best; communism or democracy. The USSR supplied Cuba with Nuclear Missile's; this sparked the Cuban Missile Crisis, which proved the Domino Theory and the need to "prop up" Vietnam (the domino) to stop it falling and communism spreading. The Soviet's had already expanded through Europe, the whole of Eastern Europe falling to communism, Churchill said, " An Iron Curtain has drawn over Europe". This gave a reason for America to increase involvement in Vietnam, to stop another domino falling. Aside from the Domino Theory, another main reason why America got involved was because of the French Exit in Vietnam. The main point for this reason is that if the French hadn't left Vietnam America wouldn't have to get involved at all. • 15. The Gulf Of Tonkin Incident Under the Johnson legislation, the Gulf of Tonkin Incident was a catalyst that inevitably escalated the American involvement in the Vietnam War. It was on August 2nd 1964 that three Vietnamese torpedo boats allegedly attacked the American destroyer, the U.S.S Maddox. Apprehensive of losing more countries to communist ideals, the U.S intervened ten years prior to the incident in the Gulf of Tonkin without any major military campaigns. Influenced by former president Eisenhower's Domino Theory, which stated that if one country is communist, the other countries would be influenced by communist ideals, Lyndon B. Johnson and his administration was led to believe that the United States was obligated to stop the spread of communism. It was the incident in the Gulf of Tonkin where the U.S had its first major encounter with the North Vietnamese. Allied with the south, the Gulf of Tonkin had plunged the United States further into a full scale war. However, with America's response to escalate the war, many people wonder even today if the Gulf of Tonkin was truly a counter offensive from the North Vietnamese. Did the U.S really act responding to Vietnamese aggression or did the U.S just declare that they responded to an act of aggression just to escalate the war? During the afternoon of August 2, three North Vietnamese torpedo boats from the island of Hon Me attacked the Maddox when it was not far by, and this was the first attack. The Maddox left the Gulf of Tonkin afterwards, but returned on August 3, with the USS Turner Joy, as they were heading away from the North Vietnamese coastline they believed they were being attacked, and opened fire. Most of the presumed attacking vessels appeared on the radar screen of the Turner Joy, but not on the radar of the Maddox. Some men aboard the destroyers believed that what had appeared on the radar were ghost images, while others believe that they were actual torpedo boats attacking them. This incident is referred to as the second attack, and the following afternoon retaliatory air strikes approved by President Johnson were carried out. Some have argues that the United States' military functions as the world's "police." This essay covers international events from the past five years that can be tracked back to a foreign policy created after the Civil War and the manner in which this shift occurred and the consequences the United States faces as a result of its status as policemen of the world. Also, the action against Korea, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the attempt to stop Expansion of Soviet Expansion during the Cold War are all discussed in this essay. Codenamed Operations Plan (OPLAN) 34A, the activities were conceived and overseen by the Department of Defense, with the support of the Central Intelligence Agency, and carried out by the South Vietnamese Navy. Initial successes, however, were limited; numerous South Vietnamese raiders were captured, and OPLAN 34A units suffered heavy casualties. In July 1964, Lieutenant General William C. Westmoreland, commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, shifted the operation's tactics from commando attacks on land to shore bombardments using mortars, rockets, and recoilless rifles fired from South Vietnamese patrol boats. It is also notable that McNamara in this conversation clearly favors explaining to Congress the link between the incident and the OPLAN–34A activities. The naval battle between the destroyer USS Maddox and several North Vietnamese torpedo boats occurred in the immediate aftermath of a series of 34–A maritime raids on North Vietnamese coastal targets. After observing North Vietnamese patrol torpedo boats pursuing the vessels that had attacked Hon Me, the Maddox withdrew from the area. Johnson Decision To Americanize The Vietnam War Essay LBJ's decision to Americanize the war was not wise and well–informed, an accurate answer for U.S. defeat in Vietnam was the decision to Americanize the war. Influencing the belief that Johnson' decision to escalate appeared to have been predetermined; Johnson consistently appeared to be in favor of increasing military in South Vietnam, and he only needed something to happen in order to validate his reasoning for the increase of U.S. involvement. This something was the Tonkin Gulf incident and this event became Johnson's basis "to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States..." The effects could be seen shortly after the resolution, as immediate increases in military assistance were ordered, causing some 25,000 American combat troops in Vietnam by 1964. Additionally, by the spring of 1965 there were constant American aerial raids on North Vietnam, which was a part of an operation, called "Rolling Thunder". Johnson and his advisors greatly supported this operation in the hope of damaging North Vietnam's war–making infrastructure and its lines of supply. This operation which emerged from the Tonkin resolution also set Johnson's foreign policy apart from Kennedy's. It was the first sustained U.S. military operation in Vietnam, which demonstrated Johnson's greater military commitment to Vietnam. This trend of continuously sending more and more American troops continued, which can be clearly seen when Johnson finally decided in July of 1965 for an open–ended military commitment. Johnson was able to completely Americanize the war and rush thousands of ground troops into Vietnam. Machiavelli Ideals From the start of recorded history, there have been rulers that have ruled over their people with an iron fist, so much so that it has caused revolutions and leadership changes due to their tyrannical ruling and hatred by the people. However, Niccolo Machiavelli wrote his The Prince to help give rulers his suggestion on how they should rule over their people so that the prince can protect his land, the people, and not have a revolution happen to throw them out of power. However, that was written over five hundred years ago, and times have long since changed, but it is interesting to see if Machiavelli's ideals still hold true in today's everchanging world. In my case, I decided to compare Machiavelli's ideals to British Prime Minister Theresa May, who as of 2016, was the most publicly approved politician in Britain since the end of WWII. One of the hardest things for a public official to receive from the public is their trust. Therefore, it is interesting when officials lie. Throughout the piece, the narrator continually interjects commentary introducing details about what he believes constitutes a true war story. The U.S. did not necessarily have to be involved in this war, but one certain attack that happened during this period of time during the war could have been the starting point of the United State's involvement in the war. On August 4, 1964, war broke out between the U.S. and the North Vietnamese when the USS Maddox was attacked. Due to the attack on the USS Maddox, Congress passed the Tonkin Gulf Resolution. The attack on the Maddox may have been the official starting point of war between the U.S and North Vietnamese, and it led to many more years of war and tragedy.
